How To Revive Hydrangeas That Are Fading?

Hydrangea plants can be revived by pruning the affected stems down to the base. However, it is best to prevent hydrangea death by avoiding direct sunlight, proper watering, overwatering, ensuring adequate drainage, mulching, and checking the soil pH. Fertilizer application in too high a concentration can burn the roots of the hydrangea, causing it to turn brown, droop, and die. Hydrangeas are not heavy feeders and do not require annual feeding in the same way as roses, which can do more harm than good.

When hydrangeas start to wilt, it can be a sign that they need immediate care. The first step is to identify the cause, which can range from environmental factors to pest problems. Remove any obviously dead or diseased parts by pruning 6 inches below the issue to eliminate the energy drain and transplant the plant to a spot with better drainage.

If you have built a beautiful bouquet only to have the hydrangeas wilt long before the other blooms, don’t throw out the hydrangeas. Instead, learn how to revive them. Once the hydrangeas start to look like a lost cause, soak the entire cuttings, blooms, and all in cool water for 45 minutes, shake them off, re-cut and dress the stem, and put them back in the vase.

Soil requirements for hydrangeas include adequate fertility and drainage. The right soil pH for hydrangeas can influence bloom color and should range. To keep the hydrangea looking fresh, slowly water the plant, cut the flowering stems back to a live bud, and trim the stems at an angle using a sharp knife and adding a small slit in the stem.
