Just some corrections: – For Syrian hamsters, the wheel needs to be at least 11inch in diameter, not 8inch, that’s for dwarves – For the diet, hamsters require at least 18% protein. if they’re babies, more is preferred so you can give your hamster add-ons of: meal worms, boiled egg, scrambled egg, cooked plain chicken – For feeding, 2 table spoons every 2/3 days is correct. Ideally you wouldn’t want to put the food in a bowl but rather scatter it around the cage. Finding food is an enriching activity for hamsters, taking food from a bowl is not very enriching. Use the bowl for providing fresh fruit, veg and the occasional extra protein mentioned above – For burrowing, 6 inches is not a lot. The recommended is 10/12 inches, if you can give more than that, even better. Some hamsters won’t burrow unless they have a lot of bedding depth to do so. – As for cleaning, the advice was vague. Hamster’s poop is tiny and odourless, as for pee, if your hamster pees in its bedding, you should remove soiled bedding every 2 weeks (placing your hamster in a playpen or carrier during this process) and replace that soiled bedding with new bedding plus removing the poo. You never clean the whole cage as that would be very stressful and unnecessary since hamsters usually choose a spot in the cage to pee. If your hamster pees exclusively in a sand bath, you can remove the soiled pieces of sand daily and pretty much never touch the bedding unless it smells bad or the hamster peed on it
Concerning #3, I heard that you’re not suppose to do a 100% clean on your hamster living environment. Hamster have poor vision, so they often leave scent markers around their enclosure to identify their location. Doing a 100% clean on your hamster’s home will remove the hamster’s scent markers, confusing the rodent, making him believe he is lost in unfamiliar territory.
My hamster hurt himself because he fell off something in his cage in such a way, that his teeth hurt his food pouch on the inside. Now he’s on meds. My father is a vet, and runs a no kills animal shelter that I work for part time. I’m lead filmmaker and I write articles for the magazine. (I write and illustrate children’s books for a living.) However my father would pick up mice from a pet shop as food for a lizard. While He was jabbering away I decided to check out the hamsters. There was a baby hamster, and I wanted to hold it, but the adults were determined to defend it. They didn’t know I only wanted to hold it. I managed to push them aside and picked up the baby hamster. It gave what at the time I assumed to be a silent cry, (it was probably a yawn.) and flipped over as he was on his back. It was then that my dad told me it was time to go. I kind of feel bad because I must have terrified it, and they adult hamsters devotion to protect their young. I was only a child and didn’t know any better. I’m kind to animals. The pet shop closed down years ago and the last time I saw it the building it was falling apart.

My hamster had a Christmas tree storage bin as a home. It was really long and deep. I cut a large area of the top off and put in mesh so it was open and safe. All my critters get dried meal worms and vegetables as treats. The fluff issue, I told the store worker at a local pet shop about what could happen after he recommended it, he was shocked no one ever told him. My last hamster passed away some time ago and now I just have rats, though a lot of these things to not do, work for both.
Another BIG thing to know is you should Spot clean your hamsters cage regularly and DEEP clean 🫧 it once or twice a month.. It’s important to not clean every single thing because it completely wipes off their scent and this causes major anxiety.. They know they’re surroundings by their son if their scent isn’t there they assume they are in a completely different place.. So when you deep clean if you wash out your Hammy’s cage and wheel just leave some things with his scent.. usually though even if you deep clean you don’t have to necessarily rinse out the bottom of the cage, you can just clean up all the food and waste and the bedding..
Hey friend — one minor correction, Syrians can’t use an 8″ wheel. That size is only good for dwarf hamsters. I think each hamster has their own metabolism speeds so I will use my own 2 hamsters for an example One of them eat about 2 bowls a day and is a healthy weight and is quite happy most of the time, my other one eats about 1 small bowl in a day, so i would test how much your hamster eats and what makes them happy by spending the time to get to know their needs as each hamster may or may not have different needs to one another Some hamsters will let you brush them if they look greasy, or scruffy or even just to spend time with them. I would highly recommend only having one hamster at a time as they can get jealous of each other

I’m amazed and happy that hamster care is improving and I’m seeing more and more people take good care of them. One thing tho is hamsters need at least 800 square inches of unbroken floor space in their enclosure. As well as 10 inches deeep of bedding. Not 6.
This will also be different for each hamster though, because they have different personalities. So some of these things will depend on how they are. I’ve had many different kinds of rodents over at least 12 years and I can’t stress this enough. Some need different diets and some prefer to be in a high traffic area to mention some examples in this article. It entirely depends on your little friend and what they prefer or need.
I would contribute my part to the article, this is written with translator and carries only my experience. I think that the small wheels are for and really only for dwarf hamsters. They are smaller, but I would still recommend a large enclosure. One without bars, stress and even boredom will cause them to climb up the bars and in a right sized cage, they can fall and break their bones. I did an internship in a pet store and made my experiences there. for hamsters and dwarf hamsters is no recommendation to put them in a pair in a cage. it would be possible just not recommendable. after two months they start to attack each other and eat! They need enough toys, rest and a stress free life. Remember hamsters can die from stress! This can even reduce their life expectancy.
I have two dwarf hamsters and I made sure to do all the research needed. But I’ve notices that they don’t really runs round their enclosure much and they don’t really burrow or dig around (their enclosure is pretty big as it should be for 2 hamsters), they do go on the wheel though so I keep thinking if there’s something wrong with them?

Thanks for the info! The hamster I have is my first (he litteraly appeared in my house one day. We think he was a runaway because he was well feed and was used to humans), and I thought fruit would be ideal to feed him. I’m switching his diet. Also, I feel bad because I think his cage is too small, but it was the largest I could find on Amazon. It’s like 16 inch height, 9 wide and 11 large. About the animal proteins. It is not a must for goldhamster. My hamster refuses to eat any insects or worms (dried or living) and it is a fifty-fifty if it comes to other sources like egg. So I asked my vet and she says goldhamster don’t need the extra source. It can be more complicated if it comes to dwarf hamster.

I have had a Tan Roborovski Dwarf Hamster that is about 6 1/2 to 7 month old but her cage is small and she WAS bored but the reason is because I didn’t know how to put in the wheel for a day. Once I put it in. She is as happy as she can be!!! Also about the food I fill her food dish because she likes stashing and I understand why. What will happen tomorrow??? My friend has a really small hamster that is around 6 months old. It’s a new one since her old one passed away due to an unknown cause. Does anyone know what happened to it by any chance? Here’s what I know: It was from PetSmart and was given to her for her birthday. The cage was decently big and the hamster was medium sized. They fed him things that were given by the pet store. They looked like seeds but had these crumbly looking things in the bag with them which looked off somehow. She claims that she didn’t think anything was wrong until he sadly passed away one morning. One of my syrians is atm 4 years and a month old she lives in a 1m2 enclosure full of plants worms and insects like grasshopers. I never clean the soil only the sand pit where she pees. I also only pick her up to weigh her once a month (hamster is not interested in human contact). Also i make hamster toys from toilet rolls and they go insane for them. My six Syrians – Currently Dahlli, Dagmar and Pearl (female), and Winston, Wallace and Mishka (the guys). Very good vid thanks i ticked all the boxes for everything right thankfully//i have had hammies all my life and i am middle aged now .and still have one called SNOOTY //she has a big cage with 2 wheels .one sandbath .bridges and playtoys but she also has a hotel MY CUPBOARD i let her freeroam all my bedroom floor and she has a nest in the bottom off the cupboard that she loves to play and sleep in.she runs around waddling and finding food i place for her to find / she looks happy because she has freedom//i cant bare the thought off all those Hammies stuck in little cages when children and people get bored with the little furball it breaks my heart /they are not toys and they need alot of care /i stay up most of the night so her being nocturnal is fine most kids have to be at school and that’s when Hammies want to run and chew etc//most of my bedroom carpet has been demolished but i don’t care i love my hammy and the carpet is a hundred years old anyho ////xx

Its been a year since my Zoe has passed. I love her so much ! I kept placing her on my cheeks. At one point she had her leg stucked and broken after she escaped the cage. I was so worried and i finally solved the issue. She feeling fine after that. Her cage was quite big and she wanted to be out so yeah… She passed away on my hand and her stomach feel so jelly and i know its time … Her eyes came out those white stuff and i was crying really… Been 17 months since she left and i always miss her. I buried her underneath my block where i live. I hope i would be able to see her again after i die. 😪😪😥😥
bro i have a hamster and he is always good first his bedding is apple tree wood shavings his food mix has corn nuts dried apples and a huge wheel not those metal ones theyre ugly lol and he is a happy hamster somtimes we take him out of his cage to play somtimes he trys to run off but i catch him btw he has a gray head and white body his name is draco.
Hamsters seem to have a pretty short memory only lasting a few days at most, so if you don’t play with them for a day or two they’re more afraid of me, almost like they forgot who i am. And it seems that obesity is genetic as well since when i had more than one hamster, they all ate how much they wanted, and some looked fine, some girl was really thin and tiny, and one of them was quite obese and slow.
Every parent perusal this, PLEASE PLEASE 🙏Do your research before getting a hamster for your child! They are very delicate creatures and are nocturnal so being woken in the the daytime to play by your child they WILL probably nip or bite and draw blood and in turn cause your child to throw or drop the hamster. Youd be better off getting a kitten for your child to be honest.
I’m scared because I love my hamsters but sometimes it makes this gross sounding squeaky sound and then I go check on her but not by touching her I only lift the lid off and she has yellow liquid on her 😢 :edit: please HELP me 😭😭😭😭😭😭 and I don’t yell at her if she does something wrong or follows my other hamster and looks like she’s gonna bite her I don’t shout I slowly put my hand in the middle so she can’t and say no then Oreo because I have two in my room they both have big cages that are supposed to be for guinnepigs but there not that big and there names are Oreo and eevee the good thing is I got them from the same pet show and the same person in the pet show i get worried for them easily please tell me if there is something wrong 🙁 😖 and whenever I come home from any occasion or school I don’t shout Oreo and eevee I’m home I walk in and be quiet because I know they are sleeping
I can relate to everthing but the last point. I grown a few geberations of hammsters and always had 2 or more of them together. They have never fought amongst themselves and seemed to enjoy sleeping together and the company all together. The importent thing to note is that if you put a male and a female together, you will get baby hampstets very quickly and the enclosure will get crowded. So its best to split males and females once they reach sexual puberty.
For bedding, it’s recommended to use between 8-10 inches instead of 6. Youll also need a cage thats at least 100cm×50cm. Barred cages in my opinion and experience are not great options as the base is not deep enough and the bars encourage stress behaviours like bar climbing and bar chewing. You’ll also want an upright solid 10 inch minimum wheel for your hammy to not have a bent back with no saucer wheels. They’re not safe, neither are balls xx

I would just add that with bedding it is important not to use pine and cedar because they cause respiratory infections. When it comes to wheels the running surface must be solid, no wired wheels. They cause bumblefoot or even broken feet or legs. I am also so happy to see hamster balls are not mentioned because hamsters don’t like them at all, they are stressful, lack ventilation and can break a hamster’s toe or foot.
I just got my first hamster about a week ago. I’m so in love with him, he is soo tiny and cute! 🐹 he was very nervous and scared and didnt want to interact with me at all until after 5 days. He still doesn’t trust me fully yet but by giving him time and being patient, I hope to gain that trust at some point ☺️
Totally underrated as pets. My hamsters were affectionate, playful creatures. The only reason I don’t have one now is that I have two cats currently. They really like exploring the whole house all evening long in one of those plastic balls. Just be sure to secure the lid with a little bit of scotch tape so it doesn’t pop open when they crash into something.
I like to watch these articles even though I know these things sometimes you get ideas on the same knowledge that you know.. The first big thing I did was I put a camera to watch what he does at night..I highly recommed this bc there were so many times I saw him on the camera and it helped me know what things in particular he liked or what I could do differently or the toys he used the most.. When he was in his smaller cage I noticed he was stressed and so that’s when I did research on those small cages and changed right away to a bin cage which I highly recommend doing! Some things I did that really have worked for my hamster who is picky.. I have tried many different ways to entertain him. And here are some things that really work: I like to use a shipping tube for my hamsters to crawl thru..my little guy love it! I just incorporated into his bin cage..along with ladders, He’s got a huge wheel even though hes small He’s a Chinese hamster ( they are Not to dwarf they are just a smaller breed) I had meant to order the 8-in wheel but they gave me a 12″.. I wasn’t going to use it but then I let him try it I was thinking if he can use it without straining to use it or having any issue using it then why not? He loves it! It’s one of those that is closed and it’s got the little holes they can run into the wheel with.. He loves it he uses it like a little hideout too..and another is I scatter feed him and I will put his seeds he loved in little spots all around his bin..Also for treats he likes oatmeal (just dry no water added) he loves chia seeds, And also hamsters can have eggs, They can have chicken They can have shrimp.
Great article, many people do not know this information. Think of all the crappy cages on tiktok. Thank you for trying to educate people. Hamsters all have different personalities and needs and you did a great job trying to educate. My one hammie (long hair syrian) hates burrowing and will over groom if too much bedding or substrate gets into his fur. He never burrowed and when I tried hiding food in deep bedding, he refused to touch it. (Don’t get me wrong, he still piles bedding in his hides, but just doesn’t dig in it. basically just enough bedding to cover himself and so that a lot doesn’t get stuck in his fur. I have also tried many different brands). He prefers just to move the bedding into his home. So I keep bedding at 6 inches in winter, but lessen it when the weather warms up. My other hamster, (who is a Chinese hamster) loves bedding and climbing) So i give him as much as I can fit in the cage he is in! (8-10) and as many safe climbing toys since he doesn’t have the greatest eyesight. Also, thank you for mentioning that not all hamsters like to be touched! It is all about personalities of the individual hamster. I have had robos that love to be cuddled but the next one is just zooming around and freaks out when you try to touch them. I have had hamsters that don’t like specific people as well. They are such complicated beings and each one is different. Note: Females need bigger cages! My boy syrians fair well in a 75 gallon tank while my female was not quite satisfied.
And then there is my hamster: a lot of bedding… doesn’t dig. A lot of different fruit wood sticks to chew… chews on one of the houses. A lot of high quality, natural local food… the most picky eater I have ever seen. I give him enrichments (like Papier tubes or pet plants) … he ignores everything He does have a massiv glass cage and as much as I can see he is happy. He is just weird. I love him though 🥰
