To create paper seed pots, fill them with seed starter mix and lightly pat down the soil. Create shallow holes in the center of each pot with a finger or pencil, place the seed in the hole, cover it with soil, and spritz the pots with water to completely moisten the soil.
Recycled newspaper can be used as an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative for spring planting. Shredding paper and adding it to a blender with water creates the paper pulp, which you will use to mold your own seed beds. The paper is turned to mush with the process.
To start seeds in an eco-friendly and cost-effective way, consider using newspaper pots. Cut slits on one end and fold the tabs in to close the pots. Topwater the pots with a spray bottle or light flow watering can, gently soaking the pots and allowing water to collect in the bottom. For small seeds that need to be sown on the surface, water them with a regular watering can or small indoor plant.
For making paper seed pots from newspapers, use soy-based inks, which are biodegradable and won’t harm the soil. Place the pots on a warm surface, around 70 degrees F, and ensure the plant gets sunlight once the seeds sprout. Fill the pots with potting mix and plant your seeds or cuttings, watering them in well. Keep the newspaper moist and keep the pots bundled together.
In summary, creating paper seed pots is an eco-friendly and cost-effective method for starting seeds. By using recycled newspaper, you can create a sustainable and eco-friendly solution for your garden.

Great job! Wheat flour paste would be my choice vs. Super Glue. Or just Crimp the top edge to hold it in place once it’s off the form. Also, if you combined this with the soil pot plunger you made then you could combine the two! Pack the soil in the plunger, wrap the newspaper around, then plunge the soil into the newspaper. But I’m sure you thought of that! Keep up the great work, and have a better day!
Great info ..great article..thanks..I’m into hydroponics, which gets expensive..the setup etc., supplies, etc..now I can make my own seed starting pots, for my hydroponically sprouted seeds, with less expense..I can’t wait to start making them, and selling the plants at our local Farmers Market..(more profits for me)..thanks..
I made these paper pots from newspaper & they all got mold on them, mostly on the outside, but it was black mold. I’m now looking into simple soil blocks only. I’ve used paper cups, reused yogurt cups & used plastic cups, all of which I will no longer waste my time, soil or seeds doing that again. I’d never heard of simple soil blocks until recently, so that is what I’m looking into now. I wish everyone that tries the newspaper pot method great success, but unfortunately it did not turn out for me.
Good article, although I wouldn’t use pages with colour on them. Black and white newspapers are fine, nothing real bad in them, but once they add colour to the pages you start getting some not so fun chemicals. And super glue is fine I think, as people do use (the hard ware version) for closing wounds quickly, when you can’t get stitches for whatever reason. Cheers!
