To extend the life of hydrangea flowers in floral foam, soak them in a water and flower food solution. Avoid moving the stems once placed in the foam, and if not properly placed, remove them and repeat the process before reinserting them. Before placing the stems in the foam, condition them by cutting at a 45-degree angle under running water to allow air bubbles to escape from the stem’s vascular system.
To prevent wilting, use good quality foam, such as the NEW Midnight Foam from Oasis®, which is bio-degradable and easily transfers water to the flowers. Leave plenty of room in the foam and use 3-4 liters of bleach to neutralize the pH of the water to zero. If using hydrangea in a foam design, use a secure foam and cut stems at a sharp angle.
To keep cut hydrangeas from wilting, cut them at an angle, put them in water immediately, gently mist them daily, dip them in a jar of Alum powder, change the water after a few days, and keep them out of direct sunlight. Hydrangea wilt soon after being cut due to their sticky substance that clogs the stems. To lower the pH, add garden sulfur or aluminum sulfate to the soil, and to raise it, use ground lime.
