Which Way Does The Air In My Car’S Cabin Flow?

When installing a cabin air filter, it is important to ensure that the arrow on the filter is pointing down. Most blowers are designed to blow from top to bottom, and cabin air filters often have an air flow direction printed on them, sometimes just an arrow. On an aftermarket part, the arrow (with the notation – Air Flow) indicates air flow direction, but it does not mean placement position.

The airflow arrow should point down when installing the filter, as air comes in from the top of the car and is down at the base of the windshield. Incoming debris gets trapped on the top of the filter, resulting in top to bottom airflow. To change the airflow direction of the filter, ensure that the arrow (or “UP” marking) on the filter is pointing toward the car’s interior during installation.

To determine the airflow direction, turn the blower motor on with the cab filter and access door removed and feel with your hand which way the air is flowing. If the filter has the word “flow” and an arrow, place the arrow on the filter. The airflow direction usually comes from an inlet on the dashboard, commonly by the glove compartment. Aftermarket filters have an arrow indicating air flow, usually down, so the arrow should point down when that is true. If the filter has direction arrows, point them towards the rear of the car.

In conclusion, the arrow on a cabin air filter should point down when installing, as air comes from outside the car and flows in.
