Sunflower seedlings are crucial for their health and success, as they produce healthier plants and higher yields. It is suggested to thin them when the first true leaves appear to be about now from the picture. When planting sunflowers, press seeds about one inch into the ground and about 6 to 8 inches apart (if you’re planning on thinning them). Larger varieties require 12 to 24 inches of space, so each sunflower has enough room to grow and produce beautiful blossoms.
To sow sunflowers, press seeds about one inch into the ground and about 6 to 8 inches apart (if you’re planning on thinning them). For larger varieties, require 12 to 24 inches of space. Rubbing alcohol or a bleach solution can be used for this purpose. To prune sunflowers effectively, follow these steps:
Choose a variety. Sunflowers range from eighteen foot (5.5 m) stalks to a knee-high cluster of pom-poms. To grow the largest sunflowers, direct sow seed directly into the garden, rather than starting them in pots. When thinning close seedlings, place a finger on each side to hold the soil in place.
Thin the seedlings as needed as they grow. Space seeds 6 inches apart for smaller varieties and 12 inches apart for taller varieties. Once seedlings emerge, thin them out as needed.

Trial Garden Manager Lindsay Del Carlo demonstrates proper thinning and transplanting technique for sunflower seedlings.
I just plant each seed at the proper distance to begin with. If I’m concerned there’ll be gaps, I start them in flats (ONE per cell!) and then just transplant the ones that sprouted. Massive overplanting, followed by the massacre of “extra” seedlings is indefensible and there is really no excuse for advocating it. People have been saying to do it the way it is in the article for decades, and it is just as ridiculous now as it has always been. The only value in that method is to the seed seller. Use some logic. Plant only what you need, right from the start!
