How To Split Roots Of Peonies?

Peony plants are a beloved presence in gardens, but to maintain their health and fragrance, they must be divided. This process requires using a sharp spade to dig around the plant, ensuring not to damage it. Then, divide the clump into sections with at least three to five eyes and a healthy root system on each division. Plant peonies 3-4 feet apart in full sun and fertile conditions.

Peony division is not as simple as pulling soft roots apart and replanting the sections. Peony roots are tough and need to be cut with sharp tools to split them. Before starting, gather pruning materials. This article covers three methods for propagating peonies: how to divide mature plants, how to take root cuttings, and how to grow them from seed. It also covers the best timing to ensure success.

Dividing peonies during their dormant period, typically from November through early April, is the best time to divide them. Transplanting peonies after dividing or if they are moving can be done in late summer or early fall. Cut back the stems to just above the ground, clear the leaves, and dig around and under each plant. In the fall, when the red “eyes” (next year’s buds) are visible at the base of the plant, divide peonies.

When propagating peony plants, use a strong knife to cut the roots back to only about 6 inches (15 cm.) from the roots. Ensure each piece of root has at least 3-5 “eyes” or buds. Plant the peony as soon as possible, whether moving or dividing.
