Will Water Disrupt My Car’S Airflow?

Water leaks in a car can cause severe damage to the engine, pistons, and combustion cycle. The point of entry for water is often concealed by the roof seams, making it difficult to diagnose the root cause. Water close to one foot deep can float cars, while two feet of water can sweep away most vehicles and affect road visibility.

Water leaks into car cabins can occur in various ways, from serious issues like a heater core problem to minor fixes like a loose cabin air filter. If you notice a pool of water under your car after the air conditioning has been on, it’s perfectly normal. Sometimes, the drain tube can become blocked, and the water finds its way behind. Water leaking into a car isn’t always caused by rain; it can also be antifreeze or the heater matrix.

If a piston-engine car is submerged while running, water enters the air intake, causing immediate damage to the engine. Water can’t be compressed like air, so if any significant amount goes into the engine, it can quickly do catastrophic damage. If your car’s air filter gets damp, it won’t perform as well because water will take up the space meant for air to pass through.

Water can also clog the filter, reduce airflow, and cause the engine to run rich, which might not be noticeable at first but can degrade the engine. It’s likely that your filter got soaked and coated your MAF in water/mud, leading to the car’s AFR being off because the MAF isn’t reading correctly.

Filters heavily contaminated with water often disintegrate and are consumed by the engine and turbocharger, resulting in some issues. In summary, water leaks can cause significant damage to a car’s interior, causing foul smells, and potentially requiring costly repairs.

What happens if you get water in your air intake?

Moisture can negatively impact air cleaners, causing higher restriction readings, dust caked into mud, blocked valves, saturated filter media, and water damage to intake systems. To reduce or eliminate these effects, there are several steps to take, including preventing moisture from entering the air cleaner. For on-highway applications, using an air ram can help eliminate excess water as the air is drawn into the intake.

What happens if water gets in car exhaust?

The heat generated by the pipes and muffler should facilitate the evaporation of water that reaches that far, assuming that the vehicle has been in operation and the exhaust is at a sufficiently elevated temperature. In the event that the exhaust is cold, it is possible that some water may reach the muffler, but it is likely to burn off the next time.

What happens if the air filter gets wet in a car?

A wet air filter can result in an engine experiencing choking or running rich, due to the obstruction of airflow caused by water. This leads to an excess of fuel mixing with the reduced quantity of air. Furthermore, this can result in a reduction in airflow efficiency, as the tiny spaces within the filter are designed to facilitate efficient airflow. It is therefore imperative to ensure that the choke is kept in the correct position in order to maintain optimal engine performance.

How much water can mess up your car?

Water in a gas tank can significantly damage a car’s engine, causing issues with fuel efficiency and potential repairs. The amount of water in the tank depends on factors like the size and concentration of water in the fuel system. Even a small amount can cause significant damage, such as corrosion and damage to fuel system components. The extent of damage depends on the duration of water in the fuel system. Early detection and prompt action can minimize the potential for damage.

To check for water in a gas tank, use a water detection paste, which is designed to identify water in fuel systems. Apply a small amount to a long stick or rod and insert it through the fuel filler neck. If the paste changes color upon contact with water, it indicates the presence of water in the tank.

Can water damage air filters?

Water can promote hydro-lock conditions in air filters, causing engine stalling, airbox distortion, or collapse. Filters heavily contaminated with water can disintegrate and consume the engine and turbocharger, causing costly mechanical damage. Snow impaction on filter media is difficult to troubleshoot, as it can be elusive. Some vehicle manufacturers offer accessories to prevent snow or water entry, but a filter subjected to water, snow, or ice should be replaced as permanent damage is likely.

Water contamination can cause engine performance symptoms in Ford Transits, such as starting difficulty, misfires, damaged air filters, and stored trouble codes. Ford introduced a Customer Satisfaction Program to address this issue, which includes installing a foam seal, removing the drain hose, removing necessary ducts and components, inspecting the air filter for water contamination, sealing a body joint between the right inner-fender and cowl, and providing a water diverter panel for the right side of the vehicle.

Insufficient sealing of the engine compartment allows water to make contact with powertrain components and the air filter. Ford introduced a Customer Satisfaction Program involving foam seal installation, drain hose removal, air filter cover inspection, mastic patch sealing, and water diverter panel installation. These procedures can be viewed on TSB 17-0014.

Does water damage air filter?

Snow impaction on filter media can be difficult to diagnose, as it can be elusive and melted by the time the vehicle is in the shop. Some vehicle manufacturers offer accessories to prevent snow or water entry, such as winter grille covers, snow deflectors, or foam secondary filters. A filter subjected to water, snow, or ice should be replaced as permanent damage is likely.

Ford Transits with damaged air filters may be due to water contamination, causing engine performance symptoms such as starting difficulty, misfires, damaged air filters, and stored trouble codes. Ford introduced a Customer Satisfaction Program involving installation of a foam seal, removal of the drain hose, removal of necessary ducts and components, inspection of the air filter for water contamination, and supply of a water diverter panel.

Inspect the air filter for evidence of water and replace if it is saturated with water. If water or moisture is present on the filter media, the filter should be replaced. If not, a hydro-lock condition can occur, causing the filter to be damaged, distorted, or pulled from the air box, resulting in major damage. The cost of replacing an air filter is a minor investment compared to the mechanical damage that can be incurred.

Can water go through a car air filter?

A wet air filter can cause engine issues such as sputtering, rough idling, hard starts, and a gasoline smell from a rich-running engine. The heat from the engine and air moving through the filter should dry out any water, but if the filter gets soaked, water can displace and close off airflow pathways, causing the engine to run rich or performance to drop. If the airflow sensor is damaged, the sensor may be damaged. Symptoms of a wet air filter include engine sputtering or misfiring, rough idling, hard starts, and a gasoline smell.

What damage can water do to your car?

Water can cause various damage to a car, including engine internals, rubber seals, interior trim, electrical systems, brakes, fuel systems, suspension, and exhaust systems. Excessive time spent in water can cause hydrolock, rot door seals, and damage to brake fluid, fuel injectors, and fuel pumps. Waterlogged door cards and soaked carpeting can also cause rot. The extent of damage depends on the duration of exposure and whether the car was running at the time.

Driving through a flooded section of road may damage the engine, while leaving a car in a flooded parking lot may cause more damage to the interior and electrical system. There are various write-off categories based on the extent of damage incurred.

How long does an engine take to dry out?

In the event of a flooded engine in a petrol car, the most effective solution is to open the bonnet and allow a period of approximately twenty minutes for the excess fuel to evaporate. In the event that the engine fails to start, it is recommended that the accelerator be depressed fully to attempt to initiate the ignition process. A flooded engine is a phenomenon whereby the combustion chamber is inundated with an excess of fuel, which subsequently impedes the ignition process.

Can water in exhaust cause smoke?

The phenomenon of “smoke” that is observed when a vehicle is started may be caused by the condensation of water vapor within the exhaust system, particularly when the vehicle is left outside, including overnight. If the substance is thin and dissipates within minutes, it is likely smoke.

  • Thanks for the tip. I located your article right after I was in my car & my wife realized that the A/C was leaking inside the passenger side. I followed your procedures, & after blowing out the line, water came pouring out right away. Thanks for posting your article. It probably prevented me from having any major A/C problems and definitely prevented the ruination of my interior.

  • I like the way you explain things out. I just found this same problem in my Chevy HHR 2009 today. I searched here and your article was the first one explaining exactly what to do. One thing I will try is to suck instead of blowing. I figure that if there is this sticky thing that forms like in the hose Ac, than will be better to try to get it out instead of pushing it back. I will use my shop vacuum and will let you all know. Thank you so much. And God bless 💪🏼🙏🏼

  • My moms car has been having a moist passenger side floor for some time now and I have been concerned about mold because we use the car for deliveries so we are in it at least 6 hrs a day. The few people my mom spoke to about it said she would have to rip the dashboard apart to fix it. I’m greatful I looked it up myself as this seems like the most simple fix ever. I will be getting under her car and doing this right away thank you for sharing this article

  • My RV Coach AC had this problem until today. Went out and found my drain valve took the little nibble off and the nibble it self was really stopped up not to mention where the nibble attached. Cleaned it all out Ran The motor for about 30 to 35 minutes AC wide open no leaks What so ever now my wife has dry feet LOL. I can’t imagine what a RV repair shop would have charged for this to start of its about $95.00 an hour. Thanks again Proclaimliberty2000.

  • BRAVO Paul, ur the 1st person out of dozens of articles I checked out that showed EXACTLY where this hose should be located!!! Thank You Soooooooo Much!!! Very Informative But Easy to understand Plus you show everything Real well! I’m am a subscriber now! Great article, great teacher! And, I am a women that needs a good teacher & you nailed it! Thanks, Jen from Texas👏👏👏👏

  • Thanks Paul for explaining that there are two drain hoses on a car and that the AC drain hose often comes out of the firewall. I have been accustomed to the AC drain hose on the passenger side of the vehicle similar to the one in your article. But recently I encountered one on a 2011 Honda Pilot that came out of the firewall from the left of center (driver’s side). I found the open end of the hose and wondered if the last person who worked on the car didn’t reconnect a cooling system hose because I had discovered some disconnected vacuum hoses and other shoddy work. I could not see where this hose end connected to and I could not see the other end where it was coming from. Finally I just inched my way up the hose with my hand by feel until I could see that it was coming through the firewall.

  • Wow, good knowledgable article. I have a Toyota Echo, there is water on the passenger side, it has a aircontioner but its broke so we can`t use it . I also have a Toyota Rav4 and yesterday there was water on the floor of the drivers side. It has a air conditioner too and we use it but lately we are using the heater. My echo is a 2001 and my Rav 4 is a 2003. Thank you!

  • Thanks for this. I obviously discovered your article after finding unexplained dampness in the back of my car. It’s location was under the rear passenger seat on drivers side, that’s right side where I am. My car is a HRV. I found the start of the dampness was inside my trunk right behind the rear passenger seat. I noticed a rubber seal which connects from upper trunk door to main body had opened at both ends. I resealed that and am hoping that solves the issue. I’m thinking it will because it is more or less above where the dampness starts inside the trunk. Posting this here incase anyone else is facing the same issue and it might save them going under their car to check the drain line. Always be careful and take the correct precautions. Thanks again.

  • On my 2008 HHR it was not underneath the car but a short stub coming from the vertical wall of the firewall behind the engine near center line of car. Got to it from the TOP just behind the air filter down maybe 1 foot. Tried to snake it out but no go. Put the end of a shop vac on that stub and sucked the blockage out and instant water draining and fix.

  • I don’t have any water on the passenger side but my rear passenger seat is soaked like a wet sponge. I am going to find the hose and see if this is my problem but taking this situation one step further . . . how do I dry our and/or replace the foam under the carpet. As the spring temps warm I fear a toxic mold situation.

  • Sitting in the car park with a Alfa Romeo. I’ve filled it with water nearly every 2 days. About a week back my front seat was full of water. So this has made a lot of sense, I’ve just liffted my bonennt 2 minutes after filling it up with water and driving and now it’s spitting, my air hose thing is loose, so I’ve pushed it on, not that it will probably do anything.. my have to book to get it serviced.. how long can I drive like this untill I blow up lol, I’ve got another propably 20 K to go 👀

  • My Toyota Auris Hybrid has a water leak when it rains. The water pools on the passenger side front floor. I checked and noticed that when I pour water on the scuttle, it goes inside the car. I bought the car second-hand and am looking for advice on how to fix this issue. The scuttle holes are clean. How can i check if they are 100% clean .

  • HELP!! Winter here, no AC usage, not sure when leak in passenger started. Blew air in AC drain plug no water comes out. Stage thing is only the far right of the passenger floor is wet, I can see a small bit of water coming down when I put water in the drain area near windshield window. I cleaned out the debris etc around that area, is there any hoes in the fender area or heater core that leads to the passenger floor? Maybe windshield wiper hoes? I see it’s coming out of the fender, but don’t want to take it apart if that’s not it, there appears to be a leak somewhere in the windshield wiper system since water does dissappear the next day, but again when i a put garden hoe to the drain near windshield wiper area thereso that small leak. 2006 corolla. Thanks in advanced.

  • Could this also be how water gets on the floorboard on the driver’s side? I have a 2009 Saturn Vue XR & the floorboard gets soaked when it rains or snows but there isn’t a problem with the weather stripping above the windows & doors & no sunroof & it’s not a heater core leak so maybe this is the problem?

  • Hi Paul. Is the AC drain hose in anyway connected to the washer fluid reservoir? I got the water pooling into the cabin of my Rav4 after driving with the AC on for a while but on the driver side. Oddly enough I am also out of washer fluid shortly after I add it and I hear a splashing noise behind the glove box on left turns which has turned into an air spraying noise.

  • Is this also the drain to let the water out that enters the fresh air vents in front of the front windshield? There is another article showing the tube having been disconnected from the plastic vent system causing the moisture to drip directly into the vehicle – so if it isn’t clogged, this could also be the case. My particular situation was after a big rainstorm – 1″ of water in the passenger side floorboard areas.

  • I has this problem last week. I couldn’t get to the drain myself and took it to the garage. I got it back and now the fan is loud. Still cold but there’s a whirring that goes up in pitch as you turn it up. It wasn’t like that when the water was in there. Could it have damaged the motor that fast? They just replaced the thing a couple of weeks ago and I’m getting suspicious of the guy because I get one thing fixed and something else breaks. The drain was the fourth time I’ve come in for an AC issue. I don’t know enough about cars and I’m getting frustrated.

  • A rat moved in and chewed my windshield washer lines in 6 places. One was in the front passenger side which wet the floor. Trapped him/her with live trap and repaired hoses. Only problem was finding out how to dry out the carpet and pad. How to remove the plastic outer panels was a mystery to me. Someone needs to make a article about that.
