When Should Hanging Vanda Orchids Be Watered?

Vanda orchids are flowering plants with over 28,000 species in the Orchidaceaefamily, with four times as many orchid species as mammal species. To ensure proper watering, it is crucial to understand the watering needs of hanging Vanda orchids. These tropical gems prefer a warm watering schedule, especially during the spring and summer months. The best method for water-mounted hanging orchids is to soak the entire orchid mount in a bucket of warm water for about 15 minutes. It is best to water early morning, before 10am for the first watering, and after 5pm for the evening watering. A midday watering before noon can also be added to avoid watering at the wrong time.

Vanda orchids may require daily or twice-a-day waterings in extremely hot weather. Keep humidity levels very high between 60 and 80. Hanging Vandas need to be watered more frequently than their counterparts grown in containers with a growing medium. Exposure to light, hardiness, soil, propagation, diseases and pests, and uses are essential for their growth.

Watering Vandas should be done daily, either by spraying them with a sprayer or using an in-home vase or bucket. In greenhouses, water daily regardless of whether the plant is potted, in a hanging basket, or mounted. Use lukewarm water and keep the temperature below 50F. In periods of high temperatures, Vandas might need to be watered twice a day. When watering a Vanda, first soak the plant until the white or red color appears. Water roughly once a week during winter dormancy and keep the container’s medium consistently moist but not soggy during the growing season. Vanda orchids love water and need a fast wet and dry cycle.
