Cut hydrangeas are notorious for wilting quickly once cut, making it difficult to keep them looking fresh. To revive drooping hydrangea cut flowers, follow these simple and effective methods.
Give the hydrangeas an ice bath by filling a sink with ice cold water and submerging the entire stem, flower head, and all. Leave for at least a couple of hours or even overnight. Most hydrangeas will perk back up after an extended bath.
Completely submerge the hydrangeas in water and let them sit for a few hours to rehydrate. Trim the stems at an angle using a sharp knife and add a small slit in the stem to help it suck up more water.
Prepare a clean vase. Rinse and trim the stems. Plunge the hydrangeas into clean water. Hydrate and rest the hydrangeas.
Make a vertical slit in the incision and hold the stem upright in boiling water for about 60 seconds. Place the hydrangeas back in the vase.
Re-cut the stem at a deep angle and remove all leaves. Fill a sink or deep bowl with water and dunk the heads of the hydrangeas. Dip each hydrangea stem into boiling water for about 30 seconds. This brief exposure to the high temperature helps the hydrangeas stay fresh and vibrant.
