Tips For Growing Calla Lilies?

Calla lilies, known for their elegant tubular shape and vibrant colors, are a beautiful addition to any garden, whether it’s perennial gardens, patio containers, or cutting gardens. They bloom for weeks and can be grown indoors as potted plants. To grow calla lilies, choose the right rhizomes, which come in white, pink, yellow, orange, rose, and maroon. Some also have pretty white speckles on their leaves, making them attractive even when not in bloom.

Calla lilies are easy to care for, with a growing zone of 8 to 11 (or lower, if dug and stored indoors in winter). They require full sun to part shade, well-drained soil, and can be used as excellent cut flowers. The plant is toxic, so keep away from children and pets.

Indoor calla lilies should be kept moist but not soggy, provide bright, indirect light, and apply liquid fertilizer monthly while in flower. Keep away from heating and A/C vents, reduce watering when the plant enters dormancy, and cut the leaves off at soil level once they’ve died. Regular deadheading encourages the lilies to put all their energy into making new flowers.

To grow from dormant rhizomes, buy in winter or spring and plant 8-10 cm deep in a good, peat-free multi-purpose potting compost. When growing potted calla lilies, consider soil medium, irrigation, and greenhouse climate. Plant calla lilies in the spring after frost has passed or when the soil has warmed up to at least 65°F, in full sun or partial shade.

Water a Calla Lily according to its light, temperature, humidity preferences, and any additional care it might need to help it grow. Plant in the spring months for flowers in June/July, finding a suitable position in your garden with free sunlight.
