The Duration Needed To Submerge Orchids?

Watering orchids is crucial for their growth and health. The biggest mistake when watering them is overwatering, so it’s essential to know the right amount and frequency of watering. Gail Pabst, marketing director for the company, advises that the best way to water an orchid is not to pour water into the top of its pot but rather to give it a “weekly plunge into room-temperature water”. This allows the water to seep through the pot and come out the holes in the bottom. Avoid using water that has been softened or treated with harsh chemicals.

To give your orchid ample time to dry before cooler evening temperatures set in, it’s best to water them early in the morning. Immersing an orchid once per week for about 5 minutes is a great way to water orchids, but if the plant is potted in such a way that the water cannot drain completely, you will experience issues with root rot.

A good place to start with most houseplant orchids, which are usually Phalaenopsis hybrids (also called “phals”), is to water once a week. This is only an estimated guideline since you will need to take them. To bottom water, fill a tray with water and place the orchid pot inside for 10 to 15 minutes until the top of the potting medium feels moist.

Watering once a week is usually sufficient, but in very hot weather, you can switch this up to every three days. In winter, water no more than once.

The best way to water an orchid plant is to put the pot in the sink. Fill to the top of the pot, let it soak for 3-5 minutes, and then let it drain. We recommend through-watering orchids until there is free drainage coming out of the bottom of the pot. Fill a container or sink with room temperature water and submerge your orchid for about 10-15 minutes, then let it drain completely before you water again.
