Methods For Hydrating Celery Root?

Water celery plants require regular watering to ensure they receive the necessary nutrients. To care for water celery, follow these steps:

  1. Cut the ends of a celery stalk up to 2 inches from the bottom, leaving the root end intact. Thoroughly water in celery seedlings (diluted kelp helps with transplant shock) and keep consistently moist. Celery cannot tolerate drought and needs regular watering, especially when young.

  2. Prepare the celery base by cutting off the celery stalks about 2 inches above the base, leaving the root end intact. Make sure there are a couple of small leafy stalks. Celery needs at least 1 to 2 inches of water from rainfall or irrigation each week during the growing season. Always soak the soil thoroughly when watering, as celery has a small, shallow root system.

  3. Set the celery in a shallow glass bowl or jar filled with enough water to submerge an inch of the root end. Place the bowl or jar where it can get good natural sunlight.

Water celery naturally grows well in submerged soil, but it thrives best in nutrient-rich, humus-rich soil with a regular water supply during the main growing season. After a few weeks, the celery will grow roots and leaves.

  1. Water the soil, not the foliage, so the root can take up as much moisture as possible. Keep the soil moist.

  2. Rinse the base from a celery stalk and place it in a shallow cup of warm water on a window sill. Change the water daily and keep an eye on it.

  • It seems I peeled mine well, but maybe not. I sauted with onion and rosemary then added vegetable broth and cooked then blended in Vita Mix …great taste but has little pieces that almost seem like “little fish bones” I can’t chew them and in every bite. Do you know what may have happened.? thanks great taste

  • I’ve done this dozens of times and 4 out of 5 end up bolting (sending up a flowerstalk.) When this happens, the stalks become a little tougher and not quite as sweet as the original plant was. That doesn’t mean that you still can’t get good use out of them tho. I usually harvest what stems are usable then chop and can it in jars. It makes a wonderful addition to braising liquids. It can also be canned in combination with other vegies for a quick little pot of soup anytime you’re in the mood for one. Of course, you can always let one actually go to seed so you have fresh seed for next year’s garden. It’s a great way to get more value for your money to re-grow them.

  • I love celery juice! It’s also good with a sprinkle of Tajin seasoning 🙂 I learned a lot of your same growing techniques from my parents while growing up. We usually had zero waste, a compost pile, manure from our livestock, and we saved seeds! Trial & error is also a great teacher. I appreciate your website; always relaxing to watch and new things to learn. Blessings to you and your wife 🙂

  • I tried that three times from three different kinds of celery from three different shops and they all just got snotty and never rooted….. ?? And yes I changed the water every couple of days as it got dark and I used filtered water what’s the problem is this a fake article or do they just sell s*** celery where I live
