Is It Possible To Grow Peonies Over Old Roots?

Bare root peonies are plants sold with their roots exposed, rather than in a container with soil. They are often offered for sale through mail-order retailers, nurseries, and big box stores. To plant peony roots correctly, ensure the buds face upwards and water thoroughly after planting. Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Bare root peonies prefer to be planted in late fall or early spring as soon as the soil has thawed out. They need well-drained, nutrient-rich soil for healthy root growth. Peonies cannot tolerate soggy soil, so compost can improve drainage in heavy clay soil.

Main care requirements for growing a peony plant include placing them in a sunny location with six or more hours of full sun, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and never planting in a place where peonies have been before. This is because peonies secrete certain substances that can cause bad development of new plants and increase the chance of harmful organisms in the soil, such as fungal diseases and root nematodes.

Peony roots should never be planted deeper than 2 inches, and they do not tolerate “wet feet”. To keep the peony’s rootball lifted, pour a little top soil around the crown and use your hands to work a little of it. Set the roots and crown shallowly in the hole with the pink buds near soil level, no more than two to four inches (5 to 10 cm) below the soil.

To plant your peony, dig a generously filled hole that accommodates the bare-root plant and enrich the soil before backfilling it. This will help ensure the plant grows healthy and vibrantly in your garden.
