Sunflowers, a symbol of beauty and resilience, turn away from the sun when they reach maturity to reduce their exposure to heat and ultraviolet rays. This process, known as heliotropism, allows them to protect themselves and face the sun as it moves across the sky. Young flower heads exhibit this characteristic due to their green “bracts” that resemble a mane. New research has revealed that the plant’s internal clock and light detection work together to allow the flower to face east as the sun rises and bend to the west.
Sunflowers pivot to face the sun during the day and rotate 180 degrees at night to greet the morning sun. Researchers from UC Davis and UC Berkeley have found that heads facing the morning sun warmed up more rapidly. However, immature sunflowers still track the sun’s path on cloudy days, not turning away. When the sun is out, the plant’s stem grows more on the eastern side, pushing the head towards the west. Special motor cells at the bases of flower buds shrink or enlarge as they absorb water, moving their faces toward the sun.
At night, in its absence, the sunflowers face east again, anticipating the sun’s return. This behavior continues until they get old, when they stop moving. The sentiment shared is that when there is no sunshine or light, sunflowers turn to each other to share their energy/light.

📹 Why Are the Sunflowers Turning Away From the Sun? 🌄🌻🤔

the morning, all the sunflowers will face east, the direction of the rising sun. As the sun moves, so will the sunflower heads to follow it. But as summer turns to autumn and the sunflowers get big and ripe and heavy with seeds, they will stop moving. Until they are harvested, they will face only east
I’ve been saying this for years, and I always thought it was just me romanticising my childhood, but… I do remember those warm orange hues, the bright blue skies. For the longest time, I thought I’d simply lost the childlike wonder, the magic of it all, and honestly? I wish that were the case, instead of what might actually be going on. Dystopia 101.
The ozone layer has been depleting since I was a kid almost 40 years now. I always thought that COULD be a reasoning as to why the sun is white hot now instead of a warm glowing orange color. Because we lost that layer of protection. It could also be the reason why the sunflowers are turning away because of the intensity of the heat and UV rays. There’s also the fact that around 2010, China launched a “Sun Simulator” into the sky. I really don’t know what to think about the sun, moon, stars, or even space anymore.
🚩Back in 1979 I was 9 years old & the original COSMOS by Carl Sagan was on PBS. My Grandma was fascinated so she was given the hardback book, COSMOS. It was beautiful & every single time I visited I got that book out & studied the heck out of it! I was fascinated too. One thing I distinctly remember is that there was a picture of the Milky Way & a dot with an arrow saying “You are Here”. It showed how Earth was located on one of the upper, outer arms of our spiral galaxy, the Sagittarius Arm. I was so excited by that because I am a Sagittarius 🏹♐ & it made it so easy to remember! 45 years later, I see that now, we are NO WHERE NEAR THAT SPOT. WE ARE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE BLACK HOLE IN THE CENTER OF THE MILKY WAY 🌌 & MUCH, MUCH CLOSER TO THE CENTER! What?! And besides that, tell me what color crayon did you use as a kid to color the sun? I always used YELLOW. But now when I glance up I see a pale pale yellow almost white sun. What the heck is going on?! It seems to bleach the everloving crap out of things _MUCH FASTER _ than it ever used to. Is it a different sun? Did we get moved to a different spot in the Milky Way? I was 9. I didn’t have that big of a brain to make up what the Milky Way looked like or that the spiral arms were even called “arms” or that the arms have separate names! I don’t know. I pray it is all done to help us & to save us from whatever cosmic calamity would have happened if we were still located over on the Sagittarius Arm. 🤷🏻♀️
Nature is all sorts of crazy nowadays our trees are deciduous and should of started to lose their leaves in March but they have only just started falling. Most people I know said that their crops of vegetables failed I know that we have been inundated with solar flares but the temperature even though it is suppose to winter in 12 days, that suns bite makes it seem as if we are still in summer. They have fiddled with our weather patterns like they are doing with everything in nature and we have to bare the repercussions of it.
I planted sunflowers. I do every year. This year I did notice that none of them followed the sun, didn’t matter at what stage they were in, they stayed away from facing the sun. I live in middle Tennessee. It is ODD. I don’t have answers. As for the comment above concerning the brightness of the sun being “white” instead of the golden yellow color I remembered years ago….. yes me, myself and others have noticed this also. 🤔
Normal for the sunflowers as they age. The sun colour is from stratospheric pollution. Air travel has almost tripled in the last 30 years and this is the effect. The biggest contributors are the private jets as they fly around 45,000 feet. That’s in the stratosphere, too high for clouds to bring it back the earth. Could say they are geo-engineering, accidentally?
When sunflowers get fully mature, the flower is too heavy to move. But these flowers are in mid bloom and it is odd they are facing away. It could be edited though as the style of this article really takes away credibility. Honestly the music is very irritating and ghetto and the guy is talking like a drug dealer. But also I do remember the sun being yellow in the midday and the sky being much more blue. Also the sun did not sued to have a massive whitewash all around it coving half the sky! It used to be a golden orb that did not wash out the sky with a unnatural white glare.
The sun is electricity it’s not a ball of fire the sun is inside the firmament and when they spray chemicals that reflect the sun it beams back the light making it looks White because the sun is very close its local it’s inside the firmament and when it mingles with those chemicals it makes it look funny because it’s literally getting closer and closer
…oh it’s much worse than governments. 😮 Our magnetic field is exponentially weakening, we’re at 80% of 1980’s magnetic field strength. It’s dropping exponentially such that by mid 2040’s it’s near 0 and will flip. The weakness allows more Solar warming, Cosmic rays (mental effects, cancer), high energy protons (mental effects) and destruction of the Ozone layer (high UV, high cancer). Good times! 😮 To make it worse, expect a Solar Micro-Nova: triggered by the massive dust cloud the Sun is headed toward and the Galactic Magnetic Reversal…those are the 2 triggers for micro-novas and luckily both will be happening at the same time our shield is gone. 1-2 knockout for earth, happens every 12,000 years for at least 8 cycles in a row. 🤷♀️ In between we have 6,000 year repeating mini-disasters: Noah flood 6,000 years ago. It’s ok because some will survive, underground, like many ancient civilizations before us. Time to prep, homestead, ❤ your family, make peace with God and the rest will be what it is. This is why mad bunker building, government spending like it’s 1999, wars and general craziness. Good luck everyone. SuspiciousObservers has the scientific papers that back this all up.
I’ve been gardening sense I was 11 now 62 what I have learned here in the last year the UV rays are so strong right now that plants are turning away from the sun later in the day and if they can’t turn they wilt badly everyday. Something is definitely going on that we are not aware of yet, my opinion is the earth is tilting and we are in a magnetic shift. The 4 main planets will box out on 10/24/24 the earth itself will be between those planets and the sun . Blessings to you 🙏🏼🕊️
Hi sorry I also wanted to mention that I live in a valley full of natural flora and fauna that would be green and healthy for years however in the few months prior the eclipse the plant life started withering and a lot of animals started dying for no reason. Usually the wildlife will die away from human eyes but they’re showing up dead all of a sudden. I haven’t seen so many dead wild animals along the streets not hurt or damaged just dead. Also it seems flowers are just dying faster as well. It’s been raining a lot but even with the extra water the grass is yellow brown. It’s really weird but mostly sad. If there’s something in the sky killing off the plants and animals, humans SHOULD be worried. We’re next. 😢😢😢
So many people parroting the excuse about the mature plants facing east, which is an explanation that was developed, for the lack of a better word, in 2016. But here you are showing plants that are not mature yet are facing away from the sun. That puts their explanation to bed. Thanks for the awesome article
A small increase in cosmic rays benefits plant growth but a spike is detrimental. The Sun is changing due to a major cycle and the Earth also with its weakening magnetosphere allowing greater penetration of cosmic rays. Also if you live in Northern Europe you may have noticed that wind temperature in Summer has declined . This can only be caused by a weakening AMO or Gulf Stream. An increase in cosmic rays on a windless sunny summers day causes a harshness in the sunlight . Apart from plants these two conditions also affect insect numbers.
Recently I watched a article on yt (3 min vid) about a farmer of corn ( heirloom and store-bought) and crazy things going on w/that and his soil…his sunflowers were doing same thing. Where I’m at I got 0 things from my garden…and I use rain water from barrels and no city water. 🤔Strange habbenins happenin 🤔 !
Young sunflowers follow the sun throughout the day, but as they mature and grow, they stop moving and face east toward the morning sun. This is because the sunflowers’ needs change as they grow. For example, as the sunflowers get bigger and heavier with seeds in the fall, they stop moving and face east until they are harvested
Say evwry evening you wait on your dad to come home. From a distance you can see him walking up. You first recognize him beacuse of his walk and color of work unifor. But then ine day you went out as usual but you saw him coming up but you kind of pull back a bit because his uniform colar and walk have changed and when he come.up he held out his hand to you. But u realise his black hair has changed to red his nose is now short his eyes are blue. What would you do? You would run right because this person look like him but it wasnt him but a disguised.
Hi. I’m a certified Gardener with the county extension office in Colorado. Sunflowers use auxins to tilt their neck and follow the Sun during the year however… In July when flowers begin to mature and start to produce pollen and develop seed those hormones will no longer move the flower head. This creates the traditional hook style sunflower that now has seeds for birds to eat. It’s embarrassing. People with this many sunflowers growing climbing they’ve been perusal them growing for decades and then not understanding that part of the season. Embarrassing.
