How To Keep Snails Away From Sunflowers?

To protect sunflowers from slugs, create a barrier around the plants by laying down coarse sand, gravel, or diatomaceous earth. Snails can cause damage to the sunflower leaves and flowers, and if left unchecked, they can quickly multiply and destroy the entire plant. To control slugs in your garden, create a healthy ecosystem by creating lots of habitats for slug predators, such as hedges, shrubs, and trees.

Snails dislike rough textures, so surround your plants with a layer of coarse sand, gravel, or diatomaceous earth. Growing sunflowers from seed requires a sunny, sheltered spot and good soil, with well-rotted manure or garden compost added before planting. Protect the young plants from slugs and snails by watering the pots and covering them with a cloche or clear freezer bag. If slugs are eating your flowers and veggies, try smashing up eggshells and leaving them at the base of the stem, surrounded by sharp obstacles.

Ideally, you could erect a 2-foot wide path of cinders or crushed oyster shells, sharp sand, wood ashes, or sawdust. Old gardener’s remedies for slug and snails include crushed eggs shells, coffee grinds, plastic bottle rings, beer saucers, and diatomaceous earth on the ground. Copper tape, prickly brushes, electric fencing, and slug pellets containing metaldehyde work best but must be used with great care. Kitchen scourers and bamboozle gloves can also help keep slugs and snails off your plants.

In conclusion, the best way to control slugs in your garden is to create a healthy ecosystem by creating lots of habitats for slug predators.

  • Hi thank you for the handy tips, but I’m afraid hedgehogs only eat a very small proportion of slugs when they are very very hungry. Slugs carry parasites that make hedgehogs very ill. They are certainly great to have living in our gardens but best to leave them as undisturbed as possible. Just leave out water and perhaps a shallow dish of chicken kitten biscuits and overgrown areas of the garden to encourage our wildlife and they will repay you.
