I’m so open minded to new things, and I’m like you Scott that was insanely fast. I believe the types of aggregates/mixes in different regions are what make this possible. I just can’t see myself attempting it though. It’s just a phone call I wouldn’t want to make to my boss if I did something wrong 😂😂
I have water washed before, only when I’m in a situation where I can. I’ll pump all the way down, stop on a forward stroke, drop hopper, then fill it with water and pump forward till water comes out, then back, then forward until water, then back. Pipes have always been good. It doesn’t bother me how to clean out, just want to be able to prime put on my next job.
1st off nice article explained very well. We water wash back in to the mixer trucks always have a hose on smallest 3 inch hose. We pump down to top of cylinders fill with water take 2 strokes forward refill hopper and pump down till water hits the inside of the mixer trucks drum. Makes a very distinctive sound or sound difference then in reverse wide open. And yes, the same at the end after five strokes in reverse even six three strokes forward then back into reverse to make sure deck pipe is clean. If your pump has the big water box, yes very nice to fill your own hopper faster. If not, use the mixer trucks water. Most companies in our area leave the last two mixers so The pump has plenty of water to water wash. And have ran across town driven 30, 45 minutes with the hopper full of wash every once in awhile at a red light and jump out throat in PTO. Two strokes in reverse. Get back in, take it out of PTO and drive off.
I’ve never operated a boom pump, but I have a line pump with a swing tube, so it’s interesting to see how different the process is. I normally just fill the hopper and pump it out twice, drop the plug on the bottom, drop all the mud out and rinse the hopper, wash out the open piston and cycle back and forth till they’re clean and the swing tube is empty, then pop the plug back in and fill the hopper and pump it out as many times as it takes for the water to come out clear. Some days it takes longer to wash than it does to pump.
Nope for me. But if it you do it JUST RIGHT all the time and have the water, blowout location and don’t transport with a full hopper, go for it! Also, I’ve never considered throwing the pump back in forward for a few strokes then back in reverse, interesting. I guess that would push more water up and over the material in the deck pipe? Thoughts? Also also, what if you blow out the boom before filling the hopper so there is less concrete on the ground? Not enough head pressure to separate the concrete/water?
