After the last flowers fall off from an orchid, it is essential to take proper care of the plant. To do this, remove the flower spikes using a sterile razor blade or alcohol-disinfecting cutting tool. Once the roots start growing over the pots, repot the plant.
Once the flowers have fallen off, orchids rest before resuming flower production. When the stem starts to turn yellow, the flowers will droop, wilt, and eventually fall off. To encourage new growth, trim the spike a few inches above the base to stimulate new growth and conserve the plant’s resources.
After the flowers have fallen off, it is not uncommon for the stem to turn yellow and shriveling. If the orchid’s stem is yellow and shriveling, you can cut this stem at the base. Orchid care after blooming involves cutting the flower spike back, repotting if necessary, adding fertilizer, moving the orchid to a cooler temperature, and decreasing the amount of water.
To care for an orchid, prune away any dead or dying flower spikes, trim off rotted roots or dead leaves, and use a houseplant fertilizer or balanced fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) at half the recommended rate. During this time, the plant may produce new flowers.
A typical orchid plant can bloom again and again as long as it has healthy flower spikes to bear it. Moving the orchid to a room with a temperature between 65 and 75 degrees for a couple of weeks during the resting period can help trigger reblooming.
When the flowers have fallen off the plant, cut back the flower spike to just above a node (the small bump on the stem). Watering and feeding are essential to repeat flowering. If your orchid is dropping buds, it is severely stressed and will react physically by dropping buds, leaves, or flowers. Remove flowers that have wilted and turned brown one-by-one, as they will naturally drop off anyway if not removed.
