How To Move Lilies Out Of Pots?

Transplanting lilies from bulbs in pots to the garden is a simple process that requires careful planning and attention to detail. The soil in the flower bed should be rich with organic compost, and if needed, compost should be added. Plant the lily to the depth it was in its pot and add a layer of mulch to keep the soil cool.

When planting lilies from containers or packages of bulbs, ensure that the soil has plenty of drainage. Oriental lilies prefer an acidic soil, while asiatic lilies prefer an alkaline soil. Cut stems to 5 or 6 inches above the ground and dig several inches around the patch of plants and 12 inches down. Cover the top of the bulbs with 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) of soil, using a regular potting soil mix or a compost mixture for filling the rest of the pot.

Re-pot the lilies in autumn when the foliage dies down or transfer them to the garden. In larger containers, lilies can be grown on for a second season in the same pot. Dig the receiving hole or have a large sturdy bucket, pot, or cardboard box ready for the bulb or clump. Cut off any flowers or buds, and transplant the bulbs into a new location in the garden or a large pot with loose and fast-draining soil.
