Ender Lilies: How Hard Are They?

Ender Lilies is a dark fantasy 2D Action RPG set in a destroyed kingdom. The game features a series of boss fights that can be challenging, but they are not as difficult as Dark Souls. The game is tagged as souls-like on the Steam store, which may lead some people to believe it is similar to Dark Souls.

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is a standalone game released on June 21, 2021, and is available on PC (steam), Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and will eventually be released on PS4/PS5 in Q3 of 2021. The game started out easy, but the past four hours have been quite challenging due to the increasing difficulty of enemies and bosses.

The difficulty in Ender Lilies is largely due to the damage dealt to the player and the platforming puzzles being sometimes needlessly obtuse. Enemies can mob you if you aren’t careful, and they do a lot of damage. To survive and thrive in Ender Lilies, players must know their enemies’ attacks and defenses, as they vary and grow progressively more challenging.

Ender Lilies is considered as difficult as Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, which I have defeated many times when I was young. However, the boss fights in Ender Lilies are significantly easier than in Hollow Knight, and most regular enemies can kill. The game is forgiving, with players returning to their last resting spot after dying without losing anything. Overall, Ender Lilies is a challenging game that requires players to navigate through the world and overcome various obstacles to survive and thrive.

They can pull a lever that opens a locked door leading to the Hinterlands, where they find a safe place called Land’s Edge. If they go right, they find themselves at a field of flowers in front of a glowing doorway.

To end the game, the player must purify one of the flowers, causing Lilly to fall asleep. When she awakes, she is told to leave and not complete her ultimate task. The player is then sent back to the main menu to attempt to finish the game.

  • I like this game. Im a metroidvania enthusiast, i play everything i can get my hands on and this game, while note being particularly special mechanic wise,It Nails its atmosphere in an unique way. The rotten and decayed world, the mellow and sad music, its such a vibe. It feels very different even tho It doesnt do anything special.

  • You definitely missed out not playing it earlier. I actually learned of it through Rusty’s review. Ended Lilies actually took my place as favorite Metroidvania. I played it shortly after Hollow Knight for the first time. It grew on me so much. Polish is perfect and OST is unbeatable. I CAN NOT wait for the sequel to come to console. So bummed it’s only on PC now.

  • Glad to see more people liking ender lilies because I feel like it’s a game that is heavily slept on and the great thing about it is that ender magnolia is better. I played the earlier access and let me tell you they definitely improved but I rather have other people experience it to see what I’m talking about. I will answer questions of people who are not able to get it because money problems or if you are worried that it will be a bad sequel to ender lilies. I can confidently say that ender Mongolia is a great successor to ender lilies.

  • I love Ender Lilly’s and always wondered why you never reviewed it. Now I know. I loved it so much I 100% the game on my Switch. Note if you are playing on Switch, dock when you can or you will not see the subtle details in the art of the characters that are just amazing. I played maybe more than half in handheld mode before I docked it and was blown away by the difference.

  • i said this before, Ender lillies is NOT a metroidvania. it actually is a IGAVANIA. that means, its not based on nes era castlevania, with maps filled with spikes and bottomless pits, and traps, making the game be almost entirely about jump puzzles. its much closer to symphony of the night, aria of sorrow, portrait of ruin, and above all, Order of Ecclesia. which is the closest game from the franchise to it. ironically, it took me years to realize that i hated metroidvanias, what i actually loved were igavanias. and ender lillies is hands down the best igavania not linked to Iga himself.

  • I avoided it mostly because it looked like it wanted to be Hollow Knight in too many ways and seemed to lack its own identity as a game, at least from art style and theme. It seems to have way too much influence; just overt and direct inspiration which can saturate the experience of something intended to be new. I may pick it up on a sale sometime but this is still very much an iffy game for me despite some of its differences.

  • I’m so glad I watched this review. I bought the game about a year or two ago and the strange way she “dodges” made me give up on it, which sucked cus I loved everything else about it. But knowing that it can be upgraded pretty early on makes me so freaking happy. After I’m done with Axiom Verge, then Astro Bot, and the Silent Hill 2 remake I’m definitely going back and replaying it. Thanks Pam🤘🏾

  • Great review! I agree on all points, especially with the stupid beginning dash; it always made her look like a zombie that was lunging towards prey to eat their brains. I started playing it a few weeks ago, but put it down recently after Nier Automata finally released a PC patch making the damn thing playable. I’ll get back to Ender Lilies in a bit, but it’s fun so far.

  • You beat me to making a article about this, but I’m not nearly far enough to talk about it. I’m glad more word is getting out about the game! Your review highlighted the good parts about the game with some of the rougher parts. I’ve been hearing some complaints it’s too short but outside if that not much else. Great Review!

  • I watched 30 seconds of this article yesterday. Closed it and i am now 7 hours into the game. I really dig it. While the theme is decay, death and corruption, it is an absolutely gorgeous game. That little girl reminds me of my little niece. The music (or rather the ambient sound) is really off so i just close it completely and play something else on winamp. For example something fast pace like Resonance of Fate (look it up) and it fit so much better. I did found myself lost but refused to look up an internet solution. I enjoy the game that much. Its definitely flawed but there is no such thing as a perfect game. Another awesome game like this one (and with bad music) is Foregone. Look it up if you haven’t.

  • Such a great review, I think you’ve sold me on this one! As always I love how much detail you go into on the various elements that lead into the experience! Your comments about the scrabbly dodge roll were interesting, I’m curious to see if I feel the same way when I play the game myself! Also, your eyeshadow is to die for here!

  • This game reminds me of “Shaman King: Master of Spirits 2” a metroidvania adaptation i love of the anime Shaman King, in which the protagonist summons spirits to progress through the dungeons, similarly to this game some spirits are from bosses or mobs who you have to beat to adquire. Ender Lilies surely is another hidden gem i have to check out.

  • I love this game. Played ~15 hours so far and am still engaged. The map is cumbersome, but showing you how many exits there are and if you found all secrets is really great and makes my completionist feelings tickle. This one does have a few endings btw., I think there are three. When I found the first one after roughly 10 hours I was devastated, but was happy to find out you can just resume your game. The difficulty is balanced well, except for bosses. Mini bosses tend to be super easy pushovers, real bosses are tough. I would have liked more challenge in the mini bosses, but I think it really depens on when you encounter them.

  • Your color coordination is mind-blowing! This game looks like the movement physics and pace of combat might bother me. Which seems to be a commonality for Unity games, and I will admit that the game looks fully-realized in most other aspects, but I simply love games with tight movement and snappy controls.

  • I felt the same way about Ender Lilies. Thought it started off too slow but after getting a few abilities the game really picks up. Turned out to be one of my favorite MV’s of the year. Oh, and since you’re into both MV’s and retro games, I recommend checking out Astalon Tears of the Earth. Its a phenomenal game, kind of reminds me of an easier version of La-Mulana

  • I know this is an older article, but I wanted to throw up a note that there’s a physical edition of this coming via Limited Run with both a regular and Collector’s Edition for PS4 and Switch. Unfortunately there’s no Xbox copy, as is normal for LRG, which means I can’t play it with the best controller ever made. That said, apparently they’re releasing their first game on Xbox sometime this summer, though they didn’t announce which title.

  • Ender Lilies was fun for a single play-through. But it definitely had flaws… like not having enough currency to level up each spirit, and at least half of the spirits and the entire limited-ammo system seemed really unnecessary. After getting Gerrod in chapter 2, I rarely had reason to use anyone else since he was the strongest in most situations for the rest of the game. A lot of the map felt unpolished too, like samey and boxy. Hard to remember which rooms were which. The game’s weightless, numb, detached feel may have been thematically appropriate but felt unsatisfying and it was hard to tell when I got hit. Many of the bosses were really fantastic though, and it had beautiful art and some fun puzzles and challenges.

  • I’ll definitely have to check this one out!! I’ve really dug your recommendations so far!! Blasphemous is an amazing game!!.. had it not been for you I probably would have never happened upon it…. Hollow Knight is another game I am happy you mentioned… it’s an amazing game. Both Blasphemous and Hollow Knight take me back to a time when I first experienced playing Castlevania & Metroid. Thanks again for the awsome recommendations!! … You rock!! 🤘😁🤘

  • This game looks really gorgeous with it’s goth atmosphere and absolutely have to try this too 🙂 You were right about the dash movement in the beginning of the game. It just looks weird, and it would ruin the mood for me entirely. Thankfully it will change after a while. I know that you aren’t a fan of big nintendo franchises, but are you thinking about playing Metroid Dread too? I’m waiting for it since it got announced

  • I was mildly interested in this game, but your review convinced it is indeed for me! I like the “souls-retrieving” mechanic in some games, like Blasphemous, but not in others, like Hollow Knight. It’s not a bad mechanic per se but it should only be used when it actually adds something to the game or makes sense. Pam, would you consider making a article about all your favorite metroidvanias? Either a ranking article or just a “these are my 5 favorite metroidvanias and why”.

  • Be wary that this game is really lacking in the sound design department though. Wherever you go, whichever enemy you fight, there is close to no environmental sound or monster sound that makes the experience immersive (just the occasional rain or sword swinging, nothing else). And whenever you kill an enemy, you will ALWAYS hear the same little splashy sound effect, whether it is a puny slime or a mighty boss. I found this very concerning when I played the game, and I eventually gave up because I was feeling nothing since everything was basically muted. It really proves that sound design plays a major part in a gaming experience…

  • I never thought a Metroidvania would beat out Hollow Knight for me but this one blew me away. It had a unique feel with the spirits but many of the Metroidvania mainstays I love. And the music….. is incredible. I was listening to the OST a month after I finished the game. Polished to perfection. Doesn’t get much better than this.

  • i been wanting this game for like a year but it never went on sale, then it went on like 25% sale so i bought it on playstation AND xbox… then i gota ll the way to the spear knight and took a break… fk that guy…. i 100%ed sekiro and this is reminding me of it with the block/reflects but damn some of these bosses have wayyyy too much health bar lol

  • story didnt bother me cus i skipped it all, dont know whats going on and dont care lol like i said i 100%ed sekiro on playstation and xbox so i 200%ed sekiro, meaning i beat it at least 8 times for all 4 endings across 2 systems but i skipped all story lol i know it was a good story but i just dont have patience for stories, plus im probably listening to something on youtube or netflix while i play games on another tv lol

  • the little “anaim” doll kind of doesn’t go well with the dark backgrounds. Personally I think most modern 2D games are ruined with forced “dark souls” like mechanics. Whenever I see in a store that it says something even remotely similar to “souls-like” or “rogue-like” I just roll my eyes and immediately ignore the game as I know perfectly well what that means in terms of game design (or lack of it).
