Unassuming plants may be better at math than many humans, according to new research. Plants perform complex arithmetic calculations each evening to ensure they have enough resources to survive the sunless night. Mathematical models of plant growth require a choice of constitutive law appropriate to capture key behavior for a given system on the time and length. Botanists use divergence angles to define a plant’s phyllotaxis. Two years ago, there was a flurry of articles claiming that plants do math when they change their starch consumption. The biologists focused on how leaf anatomy varies across leaves of different sizes and examined plant species from around the world.
For botany, basic high school math is essential. Calculus can be helpful for modeling the rate of growth/rate of change in an environment, while probability and statistics are also helpful for assessing the likelihood of positive/negative events and their potential impact on the ecology. Mathematical modeling is one of the techniques used by botanists to understand the developmental processes of plants and can also be a tool in taxonomy. Leaf arrangement has been modeled mathematically since 1996 using an equation known as the DC2 (Douady and Couder).
Researchers have developed mathematical models that explain how a bamboo forest ends up synchronizing to these long cycles. Plant arithmetic is a form of plant cognition whereby plants appear to perform arithmetic operations – a form of number sense in plants. To prepare for a career in botany, one should take a college preparatory curriculum including English, foreign language, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and more.

How is math involved in plants?
The research team at Sugiyama investigated a distinctive pattern, designated “orixate,” observed in Orixa japonica, a shrub indigenous to Japan, China, and the Korean peninsula. The leaves are arranged in a regular pattern, with intervals of 90 degrees, 180 degrees, or in spirals that follow the Fibonacci golden angle. The pattern is then repeated with the subsequent leaf, thereby resetting the pattern to 180 degrees. This distinctive pattern is frequently employed as a protective measure.
Do you use math in botany?
Mathematical modeling is a technique used by botanists to understand plant developmental processes and taxonomy. Scientists from Poland and Great Britain have developed a mathematical model that analyzes changes in the shape of leaves with parallel nerve. The model was created using experimental studies on various species of Epipactis genus orchids in Poland. Mathematical modeling allows objects to be reflected in their actual form, often simplified, and is a set of information about an object’s properties expressed in mathematical notation. The authors, Dr. Anna Jakubska-Busse from the University of Wrocław and Dr. Maciej Janowicz from Warsaw University of Life Sciences, are the authors of the work.
Is botany a life science or not?
Life sciences encompass various disciplines such as biology, zoology, botany, and ecology, which study living things and continue to uncover new discoveries about animals, plants, and fungi. The University of Surrey offers life sciences degrees, taught by the School of Biosciences and Medicine, accredited by the UK’s Royal Society of Biology, ensuring each degree equips students with valuable transferable skills. The field’s wide-reaching nature offers numerous degrees to suit various interests.
What level of math is needed for biology?
It is a requirement for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology to complete one semester of calculus and an additional mathematics or statistics course. Examples of acceptable courses include two semesters of calculus, one semester of calculus plus a finite mathematics course, and one semester of calculus plus an introductory statistics course. Students may apply Advanced Placement credit for calculus to this requirement.
Is botany harder than microbiology?
The disciplines of microbiology and botany are inherently challenging, requiring a high level of interest and a substantial foundation of knowledge.
Is calculus used in bio?
The increasing demand for quantitative skills among life scientists has led to the requirement of undergraduates in biology to demonstrate competency in various quantitative skills, such as graphing, statistical analysis, and mathematical modeling. Calculus plays a key role in modeling biological systems, such as population growth models, disease spread models, and tumor growth and metastasis models. However, life science students are often perceived as math averse and may be less enthusiastic about taking calculus courses.
Recent work has shown a significant variation in motivational attitudes among life science majors towards the use of mathematics in biology courses. One-third of life science students reported high costs (anxiety and effort) of using mathematics in biology courses, making a significant portion of life science students likely enter a calculus course with little interest and some anxiety.
Integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses can improve life science students’ affect toward other STEM disciplines. For example, Introductory Physics for Life Science (IPLS) has shown an increase in interest in physics at the end of the semester. Students who have taken IPLS report that the biological applications are interesting and relevant to their future careers.
One approach to improving life science students’ attitudes toward mathematics, and calculus in particular, is to teach calculus through an integrated biocalculus course, where calculus concepts are applied to biological problems. This approach allows students to see the connections between physics and their biology course work, making the course feel more valuable and engaging.
How is math used in genetics?
Genetic algebras, often based on genetically different gametes, encode the probabilities of producing offspring of various types. These laws of inheritance are encoded as algebraic properties of the algebra. Baric algebras, introduced by Etherington in 1939, are possibly non-associative algebras over a field K, containing a weighted homomorphism w from the algebra to K. For more information on genetic algebras, see Bertrand, Wörz-Busekros, and Reed.
Is botany or Zoology harder?
The Master of Science in Biology degree program encompasses both theoretical and practical components. The field of zoology is more readily comprehensible and offers greater ease in passing examinations in the theoretical domain. Conversely, the field of botany is more conducive to success in the practical domain. The two disciplines exhibit comparable scope and remuneration levels, with the highest salary being approximately 8-10 LPA. It is advisable to make an informed decision in order to avoid subsequent regret.
Does biology involve math?
In contrast to the quantitative nature of physics and chemistry, biology is not typically associated with mathematics. This makes it a pivotal field for comprehending the intricacies of the natural world.
Is botany a skill?
Botany is a science that requires a specific set of skills, including research, analytical, critical evaluation, communication, attention to detail, and logical thinking. Personal attributes include being problem solvers, as botanists aim to solve environmental problems, and being patient in the scientific process. Botanists can have various jobs, with common duties including:
- Research and analysis: Botanists conduct research to understand the world’s diverse plant species and their interactions with other organisms. They also study and understand the natural world, ensuring the preservation and conservation of biodiversity.
Is botany hard?
To become proficient in the field of botany, it is recommended that one should initially undertake the collection of dried, pressed, or photographic specimens of wild plants native to the region in which one resides. This will facilitate the development of the ability to identify each plant using herbal methods, thereby introducing the student to all technical aspects of botany.

The most significant spots in the movie, at least in my opinion are the spot where the woman at SATCOM looks at the satellite photos and realizes Marks alive, and where someone secretly uploads the program to turn Hermes around and take it it back to mars/CDR Lewis makes her speech about “Its all of us or none of us”, why can’t you upload those clips???
Even the greatest botanist could not grow potatoes in Mars soil full of toxic chemicals and without naturally existing bacterial environment which we have on Earth soil. But hey, it is not documentary, but sci-fi comedy film, we cant expect technical details in entertainment movie to be more exact than they are lets say in Mars Attack or Indepence Day movies. Just when people really go on Mars, dont be surprised that they are not growing food in Mars soil or even live on surface houses where radiation is 50 times higher than on Earth. or leave Mars so easily like Hollywood shows in movie .Real people have to bring everything they need with them : Earth soil, seeds, fertilizers, probably even water. Not to mention lof of food and fuel if they want to leave. And they have to live quite deep under the ground to escape excessive radiation and micrometeorites. That is why it is going to be very expensive even to live there for 2 or 3 years.
