Peonies are medium-sized perennial plants with tuberous roots that absorb water and nutrients. They require well-draining, neutral soil away from competing tree roots and should be planted in a 12 inch deep hole. Peony plants grow to cover an area about 3 feet in diameter and stand 3 feet tall, so give them plenty of room and don’t crowd them. Sears recommends adding structures or other plants around peonies to provide extra shade.
To grow and care for peonies, get peony roots (called tubers) and plant them in the fall, leaving 3-4 feet (0.91–1.22 m) between flowers and other plants. Cover the basics in zones 2 to 8, depending on variety. There are three types of peonies: tree, Itoh (intersectional), and herbaceous (bush).
To turn peonies into a profitable venture, understand income potentials, manage expenses, and optimize your farm for success. Learn how to grow peonies in your garden with the RHS expert guide on choosing, planting, feeding, pruning, and propagating plants.
Peonies need at least 6 to 8 hours of sun each day, though some protection from hot afternoon sun in zones 8-9 is helpful. Don’t dig deep, as the tuberous roots must not be planted more than about 2.5cm below the surface. Study the plant well, looking carefully at how the roots run and where the eyes are. Cut with a sharp knife in the right direction and choose the right spot with 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day, good drainage, and plenty of room.
