Care for most orchid species, including the popular phalaenopsis variety, also known as the moth orchid, which is considered non-toxic to dogs. While most orchids are not toxic to dogs, it is important to be aware of potential allergic reactions and take preventive measures to ensure the safety of your pets.

Unsanitary handling of orchids can lead to the development of viruses, especially in unopened buds, which are the most sensitive parts of the plant. To prevent this, it is essential to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and warm water before handling the plant, and consider wearing disposable gloves for extra precaution. Additionally, sanitizing your tools before trimming spikes is crucial for stimulating reblooming, but not doing so can result in the development of a virus that could potentially kill your orchid. Always discard gloves after use if they come into contact with a sick plant.

  • An increased resistance to those germs is probably because the mother passes on some of her immune system to the child, meaning that what the mother is resistant to, the child will be too. This also explains why some mothers have weaker immune systems while pregnant and how allergies can be passed on through generations.

  • Always interesting and this makes sense to me. Our personal environments in some parts of the world are so clean, basically sterile, and we are completely underexposed to common stuff that little things that don’t hurt many people that badly in other parts of the world can easily take many of us out.

  • Yeah, my dad has believed this for a long time. As for my cousins’ kids who are prone to getting sick, Dad says they “grew up too clean.” I, on the other hand, ate plants directly out of the garden and the woods, unwashed. Blackberries and wild onions and tomatoes. There was one cat and one dog in the household when I was born.

  • I would like to incur that this also applies to having a shower. As mentioned in the article, our immune system is like a “learning” system, every time it is exposed to microbial life or viruses it learns from them so that next time it will be better prepared for an attack. Now, how does this relate to having a shower? Well, people usually in the modern age or in developed country like to take showers a lot and always keeping clean. If you have too much shower not only are you washing off your skins naturally produced oils which leads to really dry skin, but you are also weakening your immune system to basic bacteria or virus living in your house. If those invaders attack, your immune system won’t know how to react to them or how to defend against them. Thus, simple infections by bacteria and viruses that your body would normally shrug off and easily protect against will become much more potent. This also affects the potency of flu viruses, colds and etc. But this doesn’t mean don’t take showers, if you have a strong body odor or came from a gym and/or workout session by all means take a shower. Otherwise, reduce the amount of unnecessary showers you take especially with hot water. Good luck and keep healthy. 😀

  • Couldn’t the reason be as simple as: since your mother is basically your life support whilest you are in her, whenever she is exposed to extra stuff, you are as well. And since you are also using some of her immune system (until yours can fend for itself) then your body become immune and knows that it is no big deal.

  • I thank my parents for taking me and my siblings to a ranch during summers; I got stung by bees, wasps, scorpions, spiders, bitten by ants, lizards; ran barefoot around the ranch from shadow to shadow because the soil would be burning hot from the sun XD It was a very fun time playing around and getting wacked by bugs; but not a single allergy so far.

  • Been around cats and dogs my entire life, for the past few years during the fall my outside cats’ fur picks up lots of the allergens in the air that normally wouldn’t bother me except the fact that the fur acts like a filter trapping more on to it. My cats wonder why I dont give them as much attention during that time, except the one I’ve gotten use to being bathed. She doesn’t like it, but she knows the water will be warm and she gets lots of attention during the bath and after when I’m drying her off. Sadly dogs and cats can still give us allergy problems.

  • i wasnt born at a farm but my grandpa had a really big field where he grew most of the vegetables and we also had two dogs and cats around before i was born…….i understand now y i dont have any allergic reactions on anything xd. btw my grandpa passed 6 years ago if he didnt die he would be 73 right now 🙁 miss u grandpa……

  • my grandmas dog protected me when u was a newborn. She thought I was her pup as I grew up her 4 pups grew as well! Until….. her death.. I was crying for an hour I know in my heart she still stays to protect me. A few days later her daughter, blind son died…my grandma was on vacation she told people to dog sit them they abused the dogs….throwing huge stones on their backs….now my grandma has two dogs left….

  • I was born with 2 dogs in the fam, then 1 died due to heart problems. later on feral cats started to appear on our backyard. 3 were born next to the pool 😂 the mom now gave birth to 2 black and white kittens. we tamed the babies and pretty much ADORE them. we found them sleeping under the car when we found them lol

  • There might be a causation-correlation error here. My family doesn’t have cats and dogs because my Dad is allergic. I also have allergies to cats and dogs. To say that I am allergic to cats and dogs because we didn’t have one when my Mom was pregnant with me seems less likely than because my parents carried the gene for that allergy.

  • My mom was around pets the entire time she was pregnant with me and I’m allergic to EVERYTHING. (You think Im exaggerating…but Im not haha) We currently have 3 cats, 7 dogs, COWS, and chickens. Im allergic to ALL, still. Im more immune to our pets, but every now and then something will spark an attack. (could be the pets bringing in outside allergens. Idk)

  • that’s why i have so many allergies!! and thanks to my sis i’m immune to dogs (i used to come to her house very often when i was two years old, and i LOVED her two dogs, still do, even own one now) yay i know my kids won’t have many animal allergies (heheh, even tho i’m allergic i also want a cat, so when i’ll grow up, cat and dog or nuthin… tiny dog of course because i know i won’t have a big house let’s be realistic)

  • Dogs can detect pregnancy, and get pretty stressed in the third trimester because they can sense the vitality and viability of someone that isnt there yet, causing them to get upset for almost no reason, but it’s because theyre upset that they cant find the creature, and why they calm down immediately when the kid is born.

  • I don’t know if I can believe this too much mostly because my parents had gotten a dog a year before I was born, and the house was never really clean. As a kid I would roll in the sand, climb trees, and play with cats. Now I’m allergic to multiple things such as cats, honey, fish ect. and along have asthma. Of course it could also have to do with genetics seeing as my parents have some things I’m allergic to as well.

  • this is true though. asthma and allergies, i call them “rich kid” illnesses because i grew up only noticing it on my rich kids neighbors and classmates. we “unhygienic” kids didn’t have those because we play under the sun all day and play tags under the rain haha. and yeah, cats, dogs, chicks, rabbits… we had them all as a child

  • yup.. and that’s why you play outside in the dirt once in a while kid…. it was only natural in my day and well… no wonder allergies are only increasing in kids… more and more just stay inside behind their pc or even when they are outside just play with their phones all day…. In my day a little bit of rain did not scare us of.. hell I remember playing soccer in the middle of a storm < Dutch storm.. Not a US storm.. Your storms make ours look like just a cloudy day >

  • My hypothesis is that, you endure what your mothee endures while your in utero, having you body devolope certain immunities and that stuff, but sometimes, it doesnt always work. Just a hypothesis. I had cats, and cigarette smoke, near me, all my life and to the present, Im still allergic to smoke, but it takes a couple of inhales of my cats fur (Like, rubbing face against them, kissing on them, etc.) to get me going, I obviously have a little immunity to cat hair, but it doesnt hold for long.

  • I didn’t have any pets as baby, though we had some cats later. However I did use to try to constantly eat sand and fling myself onto heaps of mud as a baby/small child and I got sick wayyyyy less than my friend and his siblings whose mother was a clean freak with a super white House. However their mom did take them to the doctor over really basic things like the flu so I think they were over-prescribed antibiotics which didn’t help them at all

  • Well… I’m a lazy person and my room is kinda “always” dirty in a different way. The normal thing is of course, clothes on the ground, books or school stuff everywhere and other stuff. But the thing is that I don’t really clean the dust. So by not vacuuming my room twice in a week like my mom would do in our house, my immunsystem is pretty strong.

  • My stepmom had someone cleaning the house every day when she was pregnant with my little sister, and her first few years. My sister has astma and allergies to nuts, trees and almost every animal… me and my brother, and also stepbrothers, grew up in more normal terms, and while one of my stepbrothers have astma, noone is so sick as my sister

•°•Translation•°• I was raised around horses, dogs, cats, and cows. Yet Im still allergic to SOME stuff. I always sneeze when its alergy season or around certain plants. But this actually makes sense why Im not allergic to other things.

  • I absolutely HATE my Asthma. I know I was very sensitive in the hospital I was Born in, BUT COME ON, IF I DIDN’T HAVE ASTHMA I WOULDN’T FEEL SHY AND ANXIOUS !!! Whenever I get an Asthma attack at school, I never tell anyone because I don’t want people to fuss over it, so I wait until I get back home and use my Asthma puffer. AGHHHH LIVING WITH ASTHMA IS HARDDDDD

  • i eat with my hands alot without even washing them..eheh..ive been doing it for so long, and my parents have caught me a couple times but not all the time.ive heard u can get really sick from doing that, but i only get sick like once every 2 years…i know its pretty disgusting, but i wash them if ive been touching somethng dirty.i guess my immune system got used to it.

  • My mom had a dog named Chewbaca but we called him Chewy. He was a puppy but it wasn’t that long they had him before I was born. And well I kinda miss him. I have no idea if he’s dead. We had to give him up when we moved. He’ll be 15 if he still lives………….2 dogs in my life r gone……..,sorry I’m getting really emotional
