Can Cut Lilies Be Planted Again?

Lilies are a popular method for propagating plants, and the process of transplanting them is straightforward and can yield beautiful results. To minimize transplant shock, it is essential to understand the best time for transplantation, cut stems properly, dig to the right depth, gently separate bulbs, and lift and transplant.

Transplanting lilies involves cutting stems to 5 or 6 inches above the ground and digging several inches around the patch of plants. While bulblets or scales are easier to propagate, a healthy cutting and patience should form a clone. The plant doesn’t know it was grown in soil or hydroponically. To replant, dig the lily up, remove all bulblets growing from its roots, and then replant the main stem. Alternatively, leave the plant in place and dig down to the bulb in the soil below.

Dividing and transplanting lilies is easier than you might think. There are three simple steps: dig up the lily, split them, and replant. Diving them every 3-4 years prevents overcrowding and keeps the plant healthy. Replanting lilies after they have been dug up is best done in the fall to allow them to establish themselves before winter sets in.

Lilies can also be propagated using stems or leaves. Pull off a leaf with stem tissue attached, dip it in rooting hormone, and put it in the plant. Separate younger plants and bulbs from older ones in the fall and replant them. Bulbils grow at the lily’s base every three years.
