Misting an orchid is a practice that can be beneficial for its growth and health. It involves spraying water on the plant’s leaves, exposed roots, and growing medium, but it is essential to avoid misting the flowers to prevent damage. Misting orchids during the morning and on hot days provides high humidity, which most orchids thrive in. However, it is not sufficient as the only way of watering an orchid. Orchids generally love humid conditions, and the easiest way to recreate their humid environment is by using a mister or spray bottle.

To properly water an orchid, it is essential to use an orchid-specific fertilizer, such as slow-release pellets, sticks, or granules, as a liquid. In most centrally heated homes, the air is dry, so mist the foliage every two to three days using tepid water, but avoid spraying the flowers. Overwatering is another issue, as water can pool in the crown or between the leaves, causing rot and introducing pathogens.

Misting orchids is recommended for morning and hot days, but not on cold days or evenings. Phalaenopsis orchids live in rain forests, and ice on the roots can kill them. Spraying orchids only provides additional water, but it is not sufficient as the only way of watering an orchid. The best time to water an orchid is when the plant has completely dried.
