Will Orchids Grow Back And Bloom?

After an orchid blooms, it enters a period of dormancy where all the flowers fall off. This rest period is normal and does not indicate that the orchid is dead. Most types of orchids bloom once or twice a year and go dormant for several months. If your orchid is taking a long time to re-flower, it might be due to adjusting its conditions and providing optimal care to encourage regrowth.

If you are struggling to get your orchid to bloom again, gardening expert Melissa Strauss provides nine simple steps to help you. A happy, healthy orchid will usually rebloom every 8 to 12 months, but some may flower again in the same season. Phalaenopsis orchids generally bloom just once a year, but with special care, you may be able to get them to rebloom repeatedly.

Fall is the best time for your orchid to rebloom naturally, as cooler temperatures can trigger the regrowth process. Once the flowers drop, you can prune back the bloom stalks and continue with proper care. Orchids will grow new stems as they come out of their dormant period, getting ready to bloom again. It may take a while for new stems to appear.

To encourage your orchid to rebloom again, give the plant enough light, as the plant needs to follow nature’s light cycle. Many plant parents assume orchids are failing, but they can still bloom once or twice a year.
