Lilies are a nephrotoxin that can cause acute kidney failure in cats, with the kidneys shutting down as soon as six hours after the plant is consumed. True lilies and daylilies are extremely toxic to cats due to their devastating effect on their kidneys and their common presence in bouquets and stand-alone flowers and plants.
Eating or licking a small amount of a leaf or flower petal, licking a few pollen grains off its fur while grooming, or drinking water from a vase containing lilies, can lead to severe lily poisoning and induce acute kidney failure. All parts of a lily plant are dangerous, including the leaves, flowers, and pollen (even in the case of the Casa Blanca lily).
Both true lilies (Lilium sp. and Hemerocallis sp.) can produce severe toxicosis and acute kidney injury (AKI). In fact, all parts of the plant are toxic. Although calla lily and peace lily have “lily” in their name, they are not true lilies and do not cause kidney failure in cats. However, they do have polyuric renal failure leading to dehydration and anuric renal failure and death results.
Daylilies are another lily to avoid. Like Lilium sp., Daylilies can cause severe kidney injury. These flowers are most commonly seen outside and can cause acute kidney failure, with GI signs starting between 2 to 12 hours. Lily and calla lily are not true lilies and do not cause kidney failure in cats. However, they contain oxalate crystals that can cause kidney damage.
Ingestion of small amounts of plants or flowers of the Liliaceae family can cause severe, irreversible kidney failure and death in cats within 3 to 7 days of consumption.

CKD ( Chronic Kidney Disease) will affect 20-50% of cats by the age of 15. Dr Jones shows you how to tell if your cat has kidney …
Can flowers cause kidney failure in cats?
Lilies in the “true lily” and “daylily” families pose a significant threat to cats due to their toxic nature. Eating a small amount of a leaf or flower petal, licking pollen grains off its fur, or drinking the water from the vase can cause fatal kidney failure in less than three days. The toxin, which only affects cats, has not been identified. Dogs that eat lilies may experience minor stomach upset but do not develop kidney failure. Early signs of lily toxicity include decreased activity, drooling, vomiting, and loss of appetite.
Kidney damage starts 12-24 hours after ingestion, with kidney failure occurring within 24 to 72 hours. Early veterinary treatment improves the cat’s prognosis, but delayed treatment can lead to irreversible kidney failure.
What plants give cats kidney disease?
Plants, including poinsettias, lilies, and mistletoe, can pose a risk to cats. Ingestion of small amounts of these plants can cause illness, while large amounts can be fatal. Lilies are particularly toxic to cats, potentially leading to life-threatening kidney failure. Common toxic plants include poinsettias, lilies, mistletoe, Holly, Tulips, Foxglove, Philodendron, Amaryllis, Baby’s breath, Sweet William, and Hydrangeas.
What type of lily is toxic to cats?
True Lilies, including Tiger, Stargazer, Easter, and Oriental varieties, and Day Lilies, are highly toxic to cats. When cats digest these flowers, their bodies create a toxic metabolite that results in severe kidney injury, making them the only animal susceptible to life-threatening lily toxicity. Dogs may develop gastrointestinal upset following ingestion of these flowers, but no other species has been found to be affected by these plants.
The effects of lily toxicity are rapid, with cats experiencing nausea, decreased appetite, drooling, vomiting, depression, and lethargy within 1-3 hours of ingestion. Within 12-30 hours, cats will develop excessive thirst and urinations, leading to severe dehydration and anuric renal failure within 24-48 hours. Metabolic waste products build up in the body, causing vomiting and profound weakness within 30-72 hours post-ingestion. Within 3-7 days, symptoms progressively worsen, leading to death.
To protect cats from this fate, it is best to prevent exposure to True Lilies and Day Lilies by not bringing them into homes. However, if a bouquet of flowers contains lilies, it is crucial to know what to do if they come home covered in pollen or chewing on the plant.
Can lilies cause liver failure in cats?
Lily plants, including petals, stems, pollen, and water, are toxic to cats. Even a small amount can cause liver damage. If symptoms of lily toxicity are detected, expert vets at Animal Care Center of Castle Pines can provide emergency intervention. The most dangerous types of lilies for cats include the Asian lily, Daylily, Easter lily, Japanese Show lily, Oriental lily, Rubrum lily, Stargazer lily, Tiger lily, and Wood lily.
What does peace lily do to cats?
Peace Lilies are poisonous to cats due to their insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause vomiting, discomfort, and drooling when chewed. The toxins in the stems, leaves, and flowers can be transferred to the cat’s paws and mouth through licking. Pollen from the lily can also stick to the cat’s fur, potentially leading to kidney failure within three days. However, severe side effects are rare.
What plant is nephrotoxic to cats?
The initial report on day lilies (Lilium longiflorum) has been revised to propose that all Lilium and Hemerocallis genera, as well as day lilies, should be regarded as potentially nephrotoxic in cats. Further observations indicate that all species of the Lilium and Hemerocallis genera should be regarded as potentially toxic. Additionally, the study makes mention of the utilization of cookies on the website in question.
Are peace lilies toxic?
Peace lily, a plant with calcium oxalates, can cause skin irritation, mouth burning, swallowing difficulty, and nausea in adults. However, ingestion in small children, dogs, and cats can be more problematic. Children may experience diarrhea, vomiting, and symptoms like a puffy mouth, throat burning, loss of appetite, nausea, headache, lethargy, and constant salivation. Excessive consumption can lead to respiratory problems and kidney failure.
In dogs and cats, symptoms include oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and intense mouth, tongue, and lip irritation. These symptoms are generally not severe and do not necessitate a vet visit.
How to make lilies safe for cats?
Lilies can be toxic to cats, and cutting out stamens can reduce pollen drop. However, not bringing lilies into a house with cats is the safest course of action. Lilies are nephrotoxic, affecting the kidneys. Signs of toxicity can occur within two hours of ingestion, including vomiting, loss of appetite, and drooling. Cats may become lethargic, depressed, and unwell. In some cases, vomiting may subside, but other signs continue. Within 72 hours, affected cats may develop acute kidney failure, with increased urination, abdominal pain, thirst changes, weakness, and seizures. In severe cases, urination may stop altogether.
Are canna lilies toxic to cats?
Canna Lilies are non-toxic to cats, unlike true lilies that cause kidney failure. There is no scientific evidence of Canna Lily toxicity, and ingestion may cause mild digestive upset. However, there are misconceptions about their toxicity, and they are often lumped together with genuinely toxic lilies. Historical beliefs and origins suggest that true lilies, like the Easter lily, are the real culprits behind kidney failure in cats. It is crucial to monitor cats post-ingestion and seek vet care if symptoms arise.
What lily causes renal failure in cats?
True lilies, including Asian, Easter, stargazer, tiger, and daylilies, contain a toxin that causes kidney failure in cats. If you notice any bite marks or toxicity symptoms, bring the plant or a picture to the vet. Lilies produce secondary metabolites that help plants fight off insects and communicate with their environment. However, some of these molecules can have unintended evolutionary effects, such as toxicity to animals they were never meant to come into contact with. It is important to bring the plant or a picture to the vet to determine if the lily is toxic to cats.
How do lilies cause renal failure in cats?
Lilies can be deadly to cats due to a toxin present in most “true lily” and “daylily” species, which can cause kidney damage and death if not treated aggressively. Cats are curious species and can easily be toxic to new objects, even with minimal consumption. Vets have seen extreme toxic reactions when cats eat just part of one lily or a few leaves. The plant contains flower petals, pollen, leaves, and stem.
📹 What Are The Symptoms Of A Cat Dying Of Kidney Failure?
This video answers the most common questions about cat kidney failure, cat kidney disease causes, and symptoms of a cat dying …
Vet told us when our cat was 8-years of age, that he was dying of kidney disease. We put him on age-appropriate Science Diet food (kibble and canned food), Omega 3 and 6 supplements, Pet Wellbeing Kidney Disease Support Gold Cat Supplement, and lots of water. Here, 12 years later, he is still kicking.
My boy Gandalf is 21 years old and I took him to the vet and vet did a blood work on him and we found out he has kidney disease. The vet gave us a prescription for him Rena care, and he is doing somewhat better. He’s our special kitty. Been with us through thick and thin. Hope he will be around another 5 or 10 years. Just can’t let go of our buddy. Pray for him. Bless you all.
Wish I saw this article earlier. I lost my sweet Tabby Cat to Chronic Kidney Disease. I follow everything the doctor advice and never fail to give meds and go for monthly checkups. Eventually my boy had seizures and doctor assume he either have anemia or something else. Before they can even do the blood test, my boy had pass away sooner. I was devastated, I done my best to save him and wish I could do more for him. Rest in peace my sweet boy.
Dear Dr. Jones, I just wanted to personally thank you for your articles. I have a sweet cat 19 yr old cat named Sammy who has suffered from CKD since Dec 2019. The vet who diagnosed him gave us special kidney diet food and pills for high blood pressure (without even checking it) and said he had 6 months to live. This dear cat is my heart and soul, I’ve had him since I was 9 years old and naturally, I refused to accept what the vet said. I found your articles in Dec 2019 and you have no idea how much they helped. You gave me SO much hope. I found a different vet, one who was so kind and generous with his time and very understanding of my love for Sammy. Up until recently, we’ve done sub q fluids every other day for him and his special treat after was his favorite canned food mixed with your supplement. He loved it! Unfortunately, I’ve made the difficult decision to have him put down today, but we had 19 months together and we savored every moment and he was a champ through it all. Your euthanasia articles have also just given me comfort at this time. I am terrified to say goodbye to my best friend, but he’s very weak and struggling to walk on hard surfaces, when he pees he ends up lying down, he has no interest in me or any other furry friend, and is refusing to go anywhere besides underneath my bed or outside. I see I’m holding on because I don’t want to say goodbye plus he’s still eating (the dry food I declined him for all those months lol) and drinking water, but it’s time. Thank you so much for having compassion for animals and giving great educated advice.
Just fed this to my baby. Woke up to her throwing up so I decided even though she’s not out of her old food to switch her right onto this recipe. She’s devouring this and keeps looking over at me like omg thank you so much mom! Thank you so much Doctor for giving me this natural option for my 17 year old baby!
First of all, your advice and supplements put my 15 yo cat into remission from his diabetes and he’s been off insulin for a full month now! Our vet always told us that he had early signs of kidney disease so we had him on KD food for quite some time. My question is considering his diabetes and his signs of kidney disease, how much and how often should we be feeding Baxter this Wellness brand food? Something to note: We feed him his KD food right now with your supplement twice a day about 2 to 2.5oz of food at 7am and 7pm and he always seems to be hungry in the middle of the day. Thank you so much for all you do, I’d be lost without your articles
Murray looks like he enjoyed helping make this article. 😁 I recently watched several of your articles about home remedied for cats, cat flu, and eye infections. I am in awe at how well Murray does when you administer his eye drops!!!! I have a kitten I found on October 1, abandoned inside the wall of a storage unit. We literally tore part of the wall down to get him out. He weighed just 7 ounces when we brought him inside – sadly, people in this area abandon animals frequently. I estimate he was 2½ – 3 weeks old. (Still had blue eyes, ears open but partially folded over, wobbly when walking, still had milk teeth.) I started out bottle feeding him kitten formula and have slowly transitioned to wet food. He’s now eating from a dish and using the litter box on his own which was a milestone am really grateful he has met. He caught an upper respiratory infection from one of my cats and his eye is runny and the pink part is swollen. So I brewed up some green tea and honey. I have to say that it works really well once I finally get it into his eye!! I am so grateful for your articles, now I just have to master the eye drop skills.
I’m so glad they’ve discovered so much more about this problem. Back over twenty years ago, I was told kidney problems were due to tar in some of the canned cat food causing crystals. Maybe, that was incorrect. But, also that the cat ph was off as they are carnivore. Not grain eaters. Had a cat with a lot of problems. I could not afford the vet treatments and it seemed rough for the cats. At first sign of crystals I’d learned to put a little apple cider vinegar ( with the mother) in their water. Seemed to dissolve the crystals, and stop the problem. Worked like a charm. But, I am still wondering if there aren’t several causes. What about high oxalates foods ( as occurs with humans ). Such as spinach and sweet potatoes in their foods. Sounds like healthy food. But, can create kidney stones and bladder stones.
Thank you Dr. Jones. I am going to add these recommended supplements to my senior cat’s diet. Am trying hard to keep my old friend going. He has early stages of KD and it is a challenge to keep his weight on. I offer him canned food any time he wants it but will eliminate any dry. He loves his Temptations but now I will give him more hugs instead.
Thank you so much for this information. I have two 15 yo cats with CKD, one vomits constantly. Blood work has confirmed the disease but the only thing the vet has done is to suggest switching to kd wet cat food. My cats have been on canned cat food since they were kittens, but won’t eat the prescription diet, so I can’t wait to try the Wellness brand and have also ordered all the other supplements recommended by Dr. Jones. Both cats look dehydrated in spite of the amount of water they drink, especially the cat that is chronically nauseated. Neither are diabetic. I’m so thankful for this website!
I lost my baby girl cat 3 days ago. She was doing great in the morning until around 10:30 am. She was relaxing in the cat bed at about 10 am. It was a little cold so I covered her back with a blue towel. A few minutes later, she left the cat bed and walked to the glass back door and sit down as she normally did. At around 10:30 am, she walked back to the bed and paved on it but meanwhile she started meowing abnormally that I had never heard before. She had never meowed like that before. I heard other cats meowing like that when they were not feeling well, I guessed she was about to vomit, so I held her gently with my arms and dropped her on the floor. She didn’t vomit but was meowing louder and louder and more and more frequently. I held her again and dropped her in the soft and comfortable bed where she slept every day at night beside me. She was keeping meowing and her stomach started rising and sucking faster and faster. I called the vet immediately for emergency. On my way to the animal veterinary hospital while my friend was driving the car, I was holding her in my arms. I saw her nose and eye sockets turn pale from pink red. She was crying painfully. 12 minutes later we got to the hospital. In the emergency room the vet and his assistants checked her blood and gave her an ultrasonic examination. They said they found fluid around her right kidney and her right side kidney burst, meanwhile my baby cat stopped breathing. They said they were doing CPR on her and gave her a shot to allay the pain.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge Dr. Jones. My cat has had kidney disease for the past few years and had progressed to Stage 2 about a year ago. I discovered this article and started him on daily Omega-3’s and Slippery Elm root a few times a week as I felt was needed. About a year later, he is now at the high end number wise of normal kidney function! I think it is the Omega-3’s. Thank you so much!
One of our 6 year old kitties has been struggling, and we found out he has FeLV. His kidneys aren’t doing ideal. I already raw feed and use your Ultimate Feline (which our cats love!) He has been going to acupuncture and doing some holistic treatments. This article helped tremendously! The slippery elm was a game changer with his appetite! We are using all of the supplements you suggested in this article, and he turned a huge corner within days! I am so thankful for you and all of your amazing articles. Bless you and what you do ❤
Just perusal your articles make me feel at ease. Pets only deserve the best and I want to give my pets a happy and fulfilled life as much as I can. The Canadian Vet clinics charge high prices and only recommending processed food. My male cat is currently at the Emergency Hospital due to urethra blockage and could possibly have kidney damage for the rest of his life. My questions are: Can kidney damage be cured? Can he live a long life with this issue? I’m thinking of switching him to raw; what are your thoughts about raw feeding? I currently feed my dog raw and he is thriving. Thank you for all your hard work and giving us free valuable info.
our vet said our boy went from CKD1 to CKD3 in one year. Problem is, they didnt tell us he had kidney disease. This vet said that we need to put him on a low protein diet but you said that a high protein diet is good in your article. Can you please clarify this for me? Thank you for all your wonderful help!
My 17 year old kitty was diagnosed a year ago and doing fine until last month. Creatinine shot up to 4.2. She will NOT eat anything wet except Fancy Feast. Giving her Omega 3’s and she will barely take that. Dr said not to give her a phosphorous binder as her phosphorous levels are okay. Giving her fluids now 2 x a week. She is better than she was but lost 2 pounds and only gained a small amount back. I don’t want to lose my precious SpeedBump. Thanks for your great articles.
Great article. These products have been out for many years. Glad to see them still available. I would add reference to checking B12 and folate and include a tip on what supplement can be used to help cats with low B12/RBCs. My feline specialist prescribes Cobalequin tablets. They are small, triangular-shaped tablets that many cats like the taste of. They can be crushed and mixed into wet food, or given orally.
I know this was 2 years ago, but I hope my comment still gets seen. I lost one of my cats over a year ago from CKD. His brother is still with us, but also has CKD. His vet has him on Hills k/d, he doesn’t eat it. I mix in another cat food hoping to entice him. He will not eat canned food, no soft treats, he’s extremely picky. Doesn’t even like water/broth in his kibble. He throws up multiple times a day, sometimes food, sometimes just bile. He LOVES plants, will rip your arm off for a basil plant. But makes him throw up even more. We have another kitty that’s healthy, but they share food so she has to eat what he does. There’s not many kibble options for CKD.
Thank you so much Dr Jones. I am so grateful for the article. My kittie was just DX’d w/kidney disease. I put her on the Azodyl and Epakitini, so it was wonderful to see you talk about that. She is also trying Calcitriol. The conventional Vet agreed to put her on it when I gave him the information. We’ll see how it goes. I do give her krill oil and I just started her on Standard Process Feline Renal Support. What do you think about Calcitriol? You are such a blessing! Please keep doing what you are doing because we desperatly need you.
My friend’s cat reversed her CKD with raw food (Darwin’s and Viva Raw). So I started feeding Viva and their poops stopped smelling, pooped less, and their fur is SO DANG soft and fluffy/shiny (before it was kind of greasy with dandruff). Mind you I was feeding imo one of the best canned brands from Tiki Cats, which I still recommend if you MUST feed canned and can afford it. However, I now pay almost $100 less per month on raw, so u use the extra to buy freeze dried raw treats for them bc those are pricey but also way better than regular treats.
My cat is 15 years old and was just diagnose with a UTI and stage 2 kidney disease. She has always been on wet cat food, so now I am finding low phosphorus, low protein and low sodium foods for her. Weruva Wx is very good and she likes it. I’m using the Epakitin in her current food, but will be switching to senior food for all my cats, 10 yrs, 15yrs and 17 yrs. My cat was feral and I can’t pill her. I’ve tried several times over the years, but she’s wiry and can get away or bite me. I know the Avodyl should be given whole, but if I sprinkle it into her food, will she still benefit from it?
Thank you for the tips and information! I always love to watch! Now i have a question so i have a dog with starts of kidney disease wat can i give my dog. And can he eating treats? And wat kind of supplements do he need. Also his coat is not as good as before. I hope that you can help my!!! Greats from Holland!
Good article. Entertaining too! Not long found your website Dr Jones, but been great help to two of our cats already. One had ear trouble scratching and mites. The other a mouth abscess. Both made good recovery. Now, I’m looking for a article to sort out why another of our cats is leaking or seeping from his bottom. I’m searching through your kittie play lists.
My sweet boy has his third blockage. Vet took him blood test and kidney and liver parameters are so high he has catheter and doesnt eat anything for today. Last night he was very happy and playing with his toys and run around the house but at the morning he starts breathing fast and i see blood around his penis. Pray for him. I cried all day today 😢
One of my cats has stage two kidney disease and he is sixteen, he has two special kibble that helps kidney disease, I talked to my veterinarian about giving him wet food because I have been doing lots of research on it and found that out she said he was eating very well and she would switch him in a couple weeks. He also has arthritis and is going on three different medications, he is very tolerant with eating and talking the meds and it helps that the vet is my mom and his owner😂 I am her kid 👧🙃. But I just really hope he doesn’t have to take more medications, I will talk to my mom about the other medications.
You are a great doctor!! I am myself nutritional consultant..i konw those herbs and supplements are great! But is not easy for cats take them. I tried like i wrote you before ..simple can food.. Good brands..and simple brand Like Fancy Feast…ect..she refuse Also i tried on her water add some probiotic like Proviable- DC for cats/ dogs..she inmediate discover flavor.and refuse. Also she has hyperthyroid With Methimazole 2.5 mg which i give her in a coumponding tuna flavor medication made by the pharmacy. I think she cant take any fish ..because hyperthyroid…too much hormone in her system and all iodine ..sources no good .for her they told me.. fish also no for her. Thank you so much again..for any suggestion God bless you for your beautiful work with all those kitties🙏😊 Thank yny suggestion
My cat is 15 yrs old just diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease. We are an older couple on SSI plus can’t locate the food he prescribed locally. love my cat is there anything else we can do to extend his life, anything else besides Purina or plus NF early care wet food. Anything would be helpful. It’s so expensive. Thanks in advance. Love your articles and your cat is so precious.
Lombardi was only 14 & other than having a tooth removed, he never had any health issues. He didn’t show ANY kidney issues/symptoms until the last 2 weeks before we had to let him go. That first week we found 2 puddles that I thought were vomit from too much cat grass which, for him, wasn’t unusual at all. Also, he left a drop on hubby’s lap but he had just come from the litter box. The biggest red flag was the next/last week when he got me four separate times in one day, he’d fall asleep and then have incontinence issues that would wake him up, leading to a trip to the vet & pet diapers. They did blood work, and his creation level was at 8.7, he was already at stage 4/end stage kidney failure. We still did two ‘under the skin fluids’, just in case, but they both went right to the kidney & when they did follow-up blood work, that level had jumped to 9.9. That level is supposed to be 1, 5 means 90% of the kidneys have failed, we were now talking kitty hospice. We spent our last 24 hours with him making him comfortable, making sure he knew we were there with him & how much he was loved. We had the vet come to the house the next day & even though he was still walking, eating, drinking & toileting, we knew what had to be done. The three things that helped me justify that we were doing the right thing, we knew he wasn’t himself anymore, he was never going to be himself again & it was only going to get worse. Such a sweet boy, he’d already been through so much, enough was enough, we loved him too much for him to have to get to the ‘worse’.
Both my Cat’s eat tuna, in the morning & dry indoor Kitty food by Purina in the Evening. But OnE is drinking a lot of water & urinates large amounts in the kitty box. And is now lethargic not wanting to move eat or drink and of course it’s Saturday my vet’s not in and I don’t trust other’s!🚫🙀 Gotta HOPE🤞🏼 she makes it to Monday.
My kitty is about to turn 1 year and he started showing kidney failure about a week ago. The vet didn’t run any tests because I couldn’t afford it, but he recommended Probiotics (Fortiflora.) My cat started moving more after consuming one packet of Fortiflora. He still can’t meow, he eats, but barely drinks water. I give him water with a syringe, but he refuses so I kinda have to force him. He is trying to meow but still can’t. I don’t know if he is getting better, or if he is trying to fight the pain.
Stage 3 they said, “What can I give her to help her gain weight, not throw up and stimulate your appetite?” This article I wish I knew about when she was young. She’s 15 in December. 9lbs last year 13lbs….at what point do I have to say goodbye… she’s still peeing pooping and eats squeeze pouches only. She is very thin in the back end. My baby. Vet has her on gapipentin and appetite gel to ear only at this time …she vomits daily no diarrhea. Vet aware.
Hey Doc, is there a way I can get in touch with you I need serious help with my dog I watched a older vid of yours about lipomas on dogs and would like to send you a few pictures to see if ya can tell what’s going on he’s a older dog, had him since I was 2, I’m 20 years old now and I don’t want to lose him.
Do you have a link for the Azodyl? Another commenter mentioned how their vet said Epikitin could potentially be detrimental, could you please address this. I don’t know where to begin and your article was the first one I came across in search of helping my cat with CKD. She was diagnosed this year, she’s 17. Please reply 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Our kitty is 14.5.he’s had a bit of a rough life health wise, but a life of ease otherwise. He is looking terrible – losing weight, coat dreadful, vomiting. Diagnosed with kidney failure. He is so fussy when it comes to food. He will not eat the low protein food, nor home cooked low protein food. He is losing so much weight so fast we have decided to feed him what he likes, which is predominantly gravy. At least he is eating something. This is devastating, perusal him deteriorate so quickly. I do feel like I should be subcutting him, with fluids
I ordered the Epakitin for my kitty with CKD. Shortly after he developed crystals in his urinary tract, which he’s prone to but hasn’t had in quite a few years. He’s been through quite a lot of stress lately and that’s probably what brought on the crystals, but I got scared and stopped giving him the Epakitin. Is this safe to give him given his proneness to crystals?
Also I read that high mineral content in the water- hard water can cause the crystals. And the canned foods “ash” (phosphorus)content matters. So look for wet foods with low ash – I’ve found that these responsive to questions. Thank you for the natural remedies Dr. Jones. I’d rather use them than an antibiotic from the Vet.
My cat is almost 18 yrs female Himalayan her kidney enzymes were high that the doctor said she doesn’t have allot of time left that was a almost 2 yrs ago she’s on kidney support gold from pet wellbeing from chewy. Com. And diolieve 500 mg CBD also wet food from prescription diet a/d chicken I use alkaline water in her food and add the water mixed with nature’s sunshine liquid chlorophyll es also her enzymes improved to be in the normal range she’s more active and goes up ther stairs where she didn’t move around at all hope this info helps other s
Thank you for the info!! My cat looks just like Murray except my BooBoo has a pink nose!! He’ll be 18 in Oct. I noticed his weight loss of almost three pounds within six months. He went from being almost 16# last Sept to 13.3# in March. The vet put him on the Science Diet k/d but he’s not very interested in the dry. I’m feeding him just the wet but I can’t get him to eat more then one small can a day. He’s also taking two of the Azodyl in the morning and one at night. It’s not increasing his appetite. He stays in my bed sleeping most of the day & all night.
Thank you Dr. Jones. I have a 15 year old Yorkie and a 13 year old Havanese. The vet told me they have protein in their urine. Said to stop all meats and to put them on a prescription KD diet. Sorry, I am not going to just follow doctors orders. I’ve been doing research and finding out as much as I can in order to help my boys. I am assuming that the information you’ve shared in this article is good for dogs too, is this right???
Hello Dr Jones, thank you for the article I want to ask about the digestive enzyme if I want to give my cat cooked diet should I add digestive enzyme to the meal ? I heard that cooked food lose the digestive enzyme cause of the heat so I have to add it but my cat have CKD so I’m afraid to do something wrong and make it worse .
my dog got ear infection about a week ago, been to vet and they gave me ear drops. a couple of days later my dog stopped eating but drank lots of water. My dog hasn’t eaten for 4 days and ear infection wasn’t getting better so back to the vet yesterday. They told me she is very dehydrated and best to put her on fluids for a few hours and get a blood sample. One hour later vet called me and said it isn’t looking good ( my dog is a 8y old English foxhound) her blood is full of toxins and her kidneys had shut down. They suggested the best thing to do put her down !!??? I said NO WAY i will get a second opinion. They told me they can try and give her antibiotics and fluids for 48h, take another blood sample and see if things improve. I agreed. this morning the vet called me and said, thats she is doing much better and she even ate some chicken but want to keep her on fluids for another day. Yesterday they suggested putting her down and after a day of fluids she is doing better already !!! What are my future options ?? while i am typing this, Vet just called again. they want to keep her until Monday the least (more money i guess) and continue Fluids. Ok. On Monday vet called again, told me her toxins are now half but they want to keep her another 48h, i declined this time and took her home. Now 5 days after i took her home, she is not doing well. Vet gave me Hills “prescription food” (which she dont eat) and 20mg Nelio Tablets
Thank you so much for this article. I’m new to the website. My 13 year old kitty has calcium levels of 13, high SDNA marker of 26 on kidneys, and now a heart murmur. She’s been running around the house peeing outside of box and eating and drinking voraciuosly. She’s been put on Convenia antiobiotics 3 times in 3 months. I i was told there’s really nothing they can do for her unless i want to spend thousands of dollars and then they’re not sure they could do anything anyway. She’s clearly trying to tell me she’s hurting as she is peeing in the box so many times in an hour and then outside to tell me. I stopped the dry food yesterday, not easy as i have another kitty. Can you help me to help my kitty? Thanks
Murray is an amazing kitty – he will eat anything! But what if your cat won’t eat one, or any, of these that you recommend? Mine HATED the slippery elm – it has a distinct taste and he would not eat it in food. I don’t want to force-syringe or force-pill him. It would be so easy if he would just eat stuff in his wet food. sigh…
I feed my cat wet food for his main meals. So naturally, he craves the kibble, which I give him in small quantities as a treat. (I toss individual kibbles for him to chase, so he has to work for them.) I have thought to switch to kibble as his main food, but will NOT now after seeing this article. I wonder if the small quantities of kibble I treat him to are detrimental. He has not been diagnosed with kidney disease, but I’m going to have this checked.
I have another question. I’ve been wondering why is CKD so prevalent in cats, like what’s going on here? 🤔 I lost the kitty last year to CKD. At least she lived a full life. She died at age 18 on July 25th 2023. How can I prevent this from happening to any of my other cats while I still have them healthy or reduce the occurrence? It’s too much dry food actually bad for them too? If so, I guess I should just keep them on wet food and a binder to accompany it.
Hello. Please, what are the symptoms of kidney disease. Our cat has always drank alot of water. 1meal of kibbles and 1of wet food per day. Night before I gave her new cat treats. Normally been healthy and is 13th yo. She started meowing and acting odd this morning & vomited clear liquid (more often than usual)…then stopped eating and drinking. She has been laying with her hanches up and doesnt want to be picked up. Its now 2:30am and I am very worrried as still no food or drink. She seems calm at this time but has not gone to her bed. Is this kidney? Could she be in danger? Thanks in advance for any advice.
My 15 yrs old Persian has lost a lb in 3 weeks. Took him to vet yesterday for blood work and pain injection and jab for nausea etc.. Results were ok except for creatnine was slightly elevated. He’s not eating properly he’s picky with his food. The bulk of his diet was raw fresh kangaroo meat. Vet says he needs x-rays and ultrasound along with urine tests. Trying to get him to eat is a problem. If anyone has any ideas I’d be grateful. I’ve bought many different cans of cat food but he’s not eating properly.
I always keep 2 bowls of water every day for my 2 cats and my boy cat demands his in his cup straight from the faucet and meows for me when he wants some lol. Mine do get canned food once a day but they have dry food too. I buy Halo that is free of meal and by products. I just started mixing Neem bark in their wet food to help their digestion but had to dilute it because straight made my boy cat throw up. Should I be diluting it or be using something different? I am always looking for holistic remedies other than medicines for them and myself. Murray is a good patient.
First, my cat doesn’t really like canned food…and, isn’t DMB of the protein supposed to be less than 40%, and Phosphorous around 0.5%? I know Wellness isn’t meeting that requirement? still ok to feed? I see, you are using binder to control the Phosphorous, which my vet still has not suggested at stage 3. I should just go ahead and get it myself. My baby doesn’t like fish oil of any kind, I will have to get Krill then. I also have your “Ultimate Feline”, which she only accepts it in her dry food..
I have a question is this okay to add this to my cats wet food in they don’t have CKD I have a 1 year old persian and as you know i’m sure, they’re prone to a lot of issues. He is currently perfectly healthy. However I want to give him the best life possible. Can I add the first thing you recommended into his wet cat food? Thank you! 🥰
Dr. Jones, I know this is an old article so hoping you will see this and answer for me. You are saying 1 scoop of Epakitin. Mine did not come with a scooper and you did not mention what portion of a teaspoon you are using. Would it be 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon? I have been giving my cat a scant 1/64 t. as I have not been able to find an answer on how much to give him. I can’t find what 1000mg would convert to that I can understand and they always use salt as the medium. Thank you in advance.
Great Advice- although..azodyl is $80,you say but I love my cat…problem is the capsules must be given whole, and although tiny-giving an old cat a daily pill is difficult if not impossible-it also destroys the trust you’ve built ! Try Purina Forti Flora-my cat loves it and it has a major trick up its sleeve-it’s micro encapsulation is the magic that gets it into you friends proper gut location undigested! If you open a capsule of azodyl and sprinkle it to avoid molesting you dear old cat-you have destroyed it’s efficacy-Go for Forti Flora!!! And Try Purina Hyra Care liquid-my 21 y.o.ckd cat likes it and drastically reduced her water intake stress-
Bootsie was dx early in his life with struvite, so I’ve been feeding him prescription food for over 10 years. He was just dx with kidney disease, I guess stage 1. He’s been on antibiotics and something else since his stay in the hospital, and developed diarrhea. His brothers passed; 2 of them had chronic diarrhea and I couldn’t get it under control. What can I do for him? The prescription canned food is too expensive to feed exclusively. I give him some once a day. What can I give him? We’re on day 3 of diarrhea and he’s lethargic. I did get him some omega 3,6,9 powder to mix with some baby food pumpkin and it has some vitamins. Ty!
Hi Dr Jones. My cat has just been diagnosed with CKD (quite advanced). I advised my vet that I would like to continue using additional Omega 3 (King Salmon and Krill manufactured here in New Zealand) and Slippery Elm but I gained the impression that meant less money for them. I am also giving him Buprelieve Injection under the tongue for mouth ulcers/stomatitis. Do you believe my continued use of the Omega 3 and Slippery Elm would conflict with the painkiller? To be honest, I would much rather forfeit the painkiller and continue with the supplements. He is eating (wet food) and drinking well and I am ensuring I am giving additional water in his food dish as well as plenty of water bowls around the house. I don’t believe the painkiller will be assisting his CKD and would much rather see that brought to a halt before his mouth issues. Are you please able to offer your valued opinion? Many thanks.
I am trying the Epakitin for my cat (and Omega 3 fish oil), but the Azodyl strikes me as impractical… I’ve read that the manufacturer says the product won’t work unless the cat takes the capsule directly – not in their food. Good luck giving my cat a pill once a day – much less twice a day… Plus, I am concerned about how this product might otherwise alter my cat’s gut bug population/balance? Providing bugs to break down kidney toxins, has to mean crowing out some other kinds of bugs…
Hi! My cat was diagnosed with panleukopenia After 4/5 days of treatment, she developed icterus and a big abdomen. Now the diagnose was for FIP. But her abdomen was full of blood, not that specific liquid. She had an internal bleeding. She died. What was the cause of the internal bleeding and the possibilities of treatment for this case? I want to say that the doctor administrated meloxicam in the panleukopenia treatment. Can this be a cause for the bleeding? Thank you!
Are we mixing or just sticking with one supplement? I bought your ultimate feline health formula hoping it helps him. I’m trading that for Cosequin as he seems to have lethargy and irritation as a side effect. (Almost everything I try including the Epakitin. I also ordered another CBD and your omega krill oil. He’s 10 1/2 with a bad lower back – really bad in his hip. He’s been at 18lbs for the last year. Just recently we switched to wet food (Rawz brand) and going to the chiropractor every Thursday for either and adjustment or laser. His hip is causing him constipation and straining while pooping, our vet wants him on Miralax every day ‘for forever’ Even the Miralax causes lethargy and irritation. 🙁 It seems like it all came out of nowhere but I know it slowly progressed. I just miss my happy go lucky, loving kitty. 🙁 Can these supplements be mixed or are you just suggesting one at a time? He will be getting CBD (twice a day) and Miralax and night time.
Keep hoping you’ll post a article on how to turn off the auto-antibodies created against kidney tissue from the feline distemper vaccine. Please. I know there is research out there and that cats don’t just have bad kidney genes. Also, why is my vet telling me she wouldn’t recommend a binder? He’s on canned KD, but he hates it. I want to feed him what he used to eat. I also water the KD wayyy down because he never drinks water. I’m not kidding. He never has. Always got his water from canned food and doesn’t want any more than what’s in that.
hi my cat had stones at 7 years old so has to stay in so i know what he eats. he is 14 now but this bonfire night from 1st Nov till 12th Nov.22 i am sad fireworks are still out. time to stop. fireworks are dangerous now even louder. frightened my youngest 6 year old, middle 10 year old and eldest he is 14 year old. so all 3 hurting this November 2022. lets be peaceful in all we do. allow firearms gun powder only to the forces. love your article love bernadette xxx
Hello, I have a 21 year old Siamese with CKD and she is the most picky eater. Due to her teeth she can not eat kibble. She will not touch canned food, the only thing she will eat is sardines and canned shredded chicken that’s it. Any supplement I have to inject into her mouth. Of all the items you suggested what would be a good starting point with my girl?
I was feeding my kitty wet food but now he won’t touch it at all ( he actually gags if he smells it. anykind ) The only food he will eat is hard food. Right now he will eat Hill’s prescription diet c/d for kidney support. Can you give me any advice how to get these supplements in him since I can’t stir it into a wet food. Also do you think adding taurine to his diet will help him nutritionally?
I lost my 20 year old cat from this in 2020 during the pandemic…she was my everything ….i have never had a bond with any other animal like I did with her …she loved me so much that she would sit by the front door and cry when I would leave for work and my husband told me that she would barely move from the door unless she had to eat or use the litter box …as soon as I got home she would follow me everywhere and she would not leave my side …when she turned 20 years old she started to lose weight at a very rapid date and she would vomit a lot and she was also starting to have dental problems …by the time I took her to the vet I was told that she might have a month left to live because she was having endstage renal failure….the the last week with her was heartbreaking because she got very weak and she had lost control of her bowels and then when she quit eating I knew it as the end …I just knew she was about to pass….the morning she passed away I had made a little bed for her right next to me in my bed ..she wanted to be next to me but the smell from her losing control of her bowels was really bad….about 30 minutes before she passed away she used very ounce of energy she had and she got out of her bed and stumbled next to me ….I knew this was it so I let her stay next to me with poop smell and all …I loved her so much that I didn’t care and she wanted to be next to me …I was petting her and her breathing was very shallow and her body was cold ….I was crying uncontrollably because I knew this was it.
My sweet old man baby, Bam Bam, had chronic kidney disease but ended up dying from acute on chronic renal failure on Christmas of 2021 as an adverse reaction to an antibiotic. He was 16, one week short of being 16 and a half (his half birthday would have been the day after New Year’s). He died at the vet but I held him all night while we were waiting for the veterinary clinic to open so we could bring him in. He was so sick and couldn’t walk so I just held him like a baby and cuddled him and loved on him all night. I just hope he knew how loved he was.
TY so much. I lost my feline Rufus to Kidney Failure. About a week & a half ago I started to notice the weight loss. I was able to get him into the Vet 5 days ago. Started to give him IV fluids at home. Meds for appetite & nausea. Unfortunately, as the Vet told me years ago with another loved pet, “By the time U notice something wrong, it’s too late. The hide pain as to not tip their vulnerability to a predator.” I could on for days on how I loved & failed Rufus, but I’ll spare U. Love & Enjoy ur little beloved adopted family members, for it’s never love enough. Many Blessings All 🙏🇺🇸
My 17 year old cat is getting closer to stage 4. He’s been at stage 3 for a couple or years now. I’m trying to gather all of the courage I have because I refuse to let him suffer. I made that mistake once. I held on too long and have deeply regretted it. My cat is the happiest cat I’ve ever seen. I won’t let the end of his life be miserable. A few more months of having him with me isn’t fair to him.
I am so so sad. 4 months ago, I’ve lost 2 of my aunties. Their passing away was unexpected. After that, my grandma couldn’t take it anymore, she was gone due to heartfailure too. Within a period of a month, I have lost 3 relatives who were very dear to me. Our family was dealing with the shock of the crippling grief. And we were unable to recognise the changes our cat went through. He was already an adult cat when he chose to live with us. We’ve spent 15 years together so I assume Smoke was older than 15. And he passed away yesterday morning too. There are no words to describe how I feel. I am dying of guilt. My poor precious boy. Oh how I wish I could discover this before it was too late.
I went through this and my cat lost weight and was very largartic and urinated where he wanted . He did eat but not much else. Since his 15th birthday was very close after his diagnoses we enjoyed his final birthday and I had to put him down. I was heartbroken but as luck would have it shopping soon after in a store walking down a radom isle I saw a single cup that had a cat painting on it that looked like my cat. It was sign he was alright. ❤
My cat died from cancer I had the same thing but no kidney failure it was a tumor he was getting weaker, he was limping we had to help him he wouldn’t eat, drink barley talked. When I got home from shopping I looked everywhere for him but when my mum came home she said “honey we might have to take him to the vet, he can’t get up”. He tried getting up but then fell on my leg I was crying for a whole month. He was my brother my everything I remember his craziness.. He died December 9th at 6:50 we said we loved him and that it was okay to go. His name was Phoenix. At least he’s not suffering anymore see you on the other side feeny 😭
My Kisha went into acute failure after exposure to my arthritis cream when she was 2 yo. It only took a few licks of my hand to do this. We caught it when she became lethargic, stopped eating and I took her in. It took weeks to find the cause. In the meantime we started aggressive fluid treatments and experimental stem cell therapy. Ultimately I gave her sub-q fluids 3x a week for 7 years along with K/D food in which she led a happy kitty life for many years. In was only in here last few weeks at the age of 9 did it go south quickly. Kidney failure in and of itself isn’t necessarily painful like how humans think of pain. Pancreatitis is painful. Kidney failure isn’t like that. As long as your cat is active and responding to fluid therapy, keep it up and let them live their lives with you. Sub-Q’s aren’t difficult to do at home after you and your cat learn the process. Start by doing them at your vet clinic where you have backup help. It can take up to a year to get onto the groove. Once you both do, the skill will carry over to any other cat child you ever have. It’s a good thing to know how to do.
For those with limited finances or veterinary care, over the counter kitten milk replacer has worked wonders with every cat and kidney issue that I could catch. Have seen it set in with in what seems like moments though. Have to be vigil about kindey health. Let them wien as long as possible and still give them a healthy diet(kitten milk/and kidney support foods) helps a lot in prevention or delaying.
Had to put down my dear friend three days ago. Yasha was 21. He had cancer and it affected his kidneys, so he got ckd as well. It was always two steps forward one step back since the diagnosis and first symptoms, but when it became one step forward two steps back we decided to let him go. So happy that he was able to drink and move (even jump) till his last day, but the loss breaks my heart. He fought the diseases for 6 months, such a brave little boy. ❤ Unfortunately, the diet and phosphate binders stopped helping him.
We believe our 7 year old cat passed from acute failure a couple weeks ago. The circumstances made it difficult for us to realize how sick she really was until it was too late. Our dogs had just had puppies and so we had to give much of our attention to them in the last few months. And her being a cat she always took care of herself for the most part. We thought maybe she was depressed from the decreased attention she was receiving, and that was causing the weight loss, so we started to make changes. By the time we decided it had to be something more seriousit was too late. The vet said there wasn’t much they could do. I am racked with guilt over this because in the end we don’t really know for sure why it happened, but I can’t help thinking if things had been different, she would still be here. My family had dogs and cats growing up and I have always preferred the former until meeting our Winnie. She was just so sweet and outgoing, something I had never seen before. My pets have always been family to me, not just animals, and to think I failed her so horribly is tearing me apart.
My Boy, Siamese, that’s his name, is turning 20 years old and we are struggling a lot. He was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. However, after the next blood test, the creatinine dropped to 2.9. Now we are grasping at straws. He’s lost a lot of weight, but he eats and drinks every day.He also receives about 100ml of liquid every other day. It’s important to say, if your cat doesn’t want to eat renal food, give her whatever he wants. We use Pronefra every day – a phosphorus binder, and the vet is very surprised that he’s still alive. The diagnosis came 6 months ago.
I just lost my 2yr old cat named Sandy at first I thought it was poison as he had no appetite to eat but wanted to drink water he also vomit in several times he always hiding. I tried to feed him and gave him water but he just throw up everything. So, I decided to take him to the vet but it was too late as he was already at his last stage. The vet did everything to save him in the end he still suffered 😢 and died. If I only knew he had a kidney failure he shouldn’t died too young. 😢💔
The guilt these people try to induce in people. The average life of a cat is 7-9 years, so those of you with these long living cats should feel no guilt. Mine is now 15 and I see he’s failing. I’ll have to decide to let it starve to death or have it put down. All this horrible advice to tell a person with an elderly cat to spend thousands for a few miserable months is abuse.
My family just lost our baby boy to Kidney failure yesterday. He was nearly 1 and a half years old, he’d been seriously sick with a different disease not long after we got him.. I don’t remember the name of the sickness, but it was horrible. We had to resort to getting a Blackmarket medicine (that had already saved the lives of many Cats outside the US) the vet couldn’t do anything for him. if we hadn’t gotten the medicine he would’ve died then… We hoped it’d be the last serious health scare for him.. but we ended up losing him anyway… I just hope we’ll be able to catch the signs in time, so don’t lose our other kitties.
In August I lost my two-year-old rescue cat we had no idea what was wrong with him he never went outside well until I rescued him he lived outside but he was very little so anyway he just got real sick 1 day literally quickly as you can Snap your fingers next thing I know he was dying he was fine then he was dying just like that I still don’t know what happened I missed my cat so badly
Such a sad reality, I lost several cats to this disease. I have since adopted a new kitty. She is on the best food with the highest amount in moisture. Like those before. I have a cat fountain and two other areas for water should the electric go out. All you can do is try preventing this the best you can. Unfortunately, you can not look in a crystal ball. But for every cat you can save thru adoption, you save a life as well. Make every moment with your kitty the best you can.
I view and read all these vet articles and articles regarding kidney disease in cats. I have spent a fortune going to so many vets trying to save my two cats lives who had kidney disease. Some vets have different advice others have the same advice. I followed all the advice where they say if you do this treatment plan you cat can live for years. If your a vet its probably true. But I do not believe the average person has the same success. And I have an animal rescue and am not the average person and still couldn’t save their life. Cat one was four years old and started those weight. The vet made me believe he was experienced with kidney disease and wasn’t. Quickly the cat went from moderate to advanced stage kidney disease. I switched vets but it was too late. I followed the new vets advice and too many complications set in and I had him euthanized. My three year old cat also had kidney disease and lived 7 months after the diagnosis. I’m having her put down today because as of yesterday she took an extreme turn fir the worst.. And then my 12 years old cat had digestive problems as a kitten and I resolved this with switching to a specialized cat food. And then one day his blue eye looled black and he didn’t want to eat. I went to an ophthalmologist who diagnosed advanced stage cancer. And several vets later he died soon after. The problem with cancer and kidney disease is that it doesn’t show up until its usually advanced. And then its usually too late. So, maybe a specialized vet can work miracles but I don’t think a non vet can.
I’m here searching for help for my cat with the same symptoms, but the irony is we don’t have a veterinary hospital in my place, so I’m trying to self treat my cat who is only 6 months old, searching for holistic medicine and also trying to get the medicine through Amazon, because there’s no one to test the stage of the disease or the cause of the symptoms. It’s hard to take care of animals in such a place, happened to me many times, also lost them before 💔 My kitty is vomiting and not eating since yesterday, and she is so stubborn she spits out anything I force feed her. I wish she recovers fully. When I read the comments about other cats living upto 18, 20 years, makes me sad, to loose a pet that spent so many years with you is heartbreaking 💔 😢 The longest my cats have lived was 2.5 years, and I’m always heartbroken when I loose them. I don’t want to go through that again. Please pray for my kitty. 🙏
Back in Oct of 2018, my cat, Sassy, who was 12 years old, had lost weight. I didn’t really notice the weight loss until one night when I was sitting on my wing chair. I looked down on my lap and she was sound asleep. I didn’t even feel her jump on me, so I had no idea how long she had been there. Also, Sassy was cold all of the time and would be curled up on her fleece blanket or she would lay on me, because of my body heat. The other thing is that she threw up what I thought was a hairball, but it was a dark, olive green color. She lost interest in food and water and wanted to sleep all the time. I hope this helps.
My cat is 10 years old, the past month she’s been refusing to eat and has isolating herself and will only drink water. Recently she’s starting to get yellowish fur around her ears and eyes, we got medication for her but I see no progress. She’s losing plenty of hair and is beginning to look underweight. I really hope it’s not too late 😕
My cat is two years old now.. but he’s in so much pain and was diagnosed with kidney problem, 6 months ago he had this yellowish skin/fur, we had treatment and the he became fine. but in nov6. he became sick again, but i tried to use the same medications and in nov. 8 he became fine again. but now, nov 21, he’s in so much pain, and lethargic, also he does not want to eat anymore.
I think this is what was going on with my old cat. Drops of blood outside the liter box, missing the litter box, she was all spaced out, and not able to walk distance, getting up, laying in the hallway unable to walk. What gets me about it is yeah, she was old. No doubt. Extremely old, a “super senior” cat. 6 years older than the average cat and she has had issues the past 6 years, but she was never in horrible shape. She could jump up onto higher things, a chair, a bed, without a problem. She wasn’t an old beat down cat. Healthy weight. The following is long… Something that bothers me and has been bothering me since last year. Fall time.yearly fire alarm check in the apartments. My brother and self in a 2 bedroom apartment with this cat. Who… If provoked by a stranger entering her apartment, she might try to attack. Which is why I like to be here, and by law notice needs to be given that it’s happening and when so my brother or myself can be here to watch the cat. Our friend. Our family. They come in, check the alarm, and it has expiry date which says it needs to be changed. My reaction was literally “Ah f**…. So when is that happening?” I hate that. I know this complex is sort of “on” things and are excessively annoying, I hate everyone involved with management or workers here tbh. Move your car for the snow plow. We need to change the hot water heater, we need to do this. F** right off… When? The kid says “I don’t know, but not now, you’ll get notice. Which is the law a d responsibility of the building super intendant.
My 2 year old Cat died from what we suspect was Kidney Failure. We are not sure. It happened so fast, she started vomiting on a Friday night, which was odd for her. I figured she wasn’t feeling well and let her sleep in the bathroom. The following day she had vomited more and it was pinkish, had diarrhea, and would only take water through a straw. She passed on the way to the Vet. It’s been an awful time for me and my Mom…
We lost our most beloved cat, Buddy, to kidney failure a month ago. We had no idea – he had a dental and the required senior panel last December ’23. Everything was perfect. He stared to look off so in he went to see his Vet. Another senior panel showed his kidneys were in failure, and our vet stated the conversation with … “Well, he’s dying”. Not what you want to hear. I’m still a bit unhappy with her delivery. We tried everything short of torturous treatment, and in two weeks Buddy bolted out the door and disappeared. His mother Kewpie, who never leaves the breezeway, also vanished. I search all day. Nothing. Around 5PM Kewpie shows up and sits right in front of me. She then turned and walked toward our neighbor’s yard – where I had looked several times – and our neighbor said, “I just saw them both go under this fence”. And there was Buddy, just gone. Kewpie stayed with him until he died, and then got me. Like cherylbrown, I had a bond with Buddy that I never had with my other cats, who are all well-loved. This one hurt, and will never stop. Reply
Was a decent article until the last sentence. Prevention is not impossible. Many times kidney failure and cats can be prevented. If they are fed either a raw or canned diet. Their whole lives. No dry kibble. That will go a long ways to prevent mini cats from getting kidney failure. And for god sake, if your cat does have kidney failure, change their diet away from that kibble as quickly as possible.
They hide end of story. If you have a cat that is part siamese then pay attention to them forever. One of my first cats was part Siamese, she suffered from total kidney failure 3 years later. I then had another dumped on me, and I do mean that, but she became part of my furmaly. After 10 years I thought we had missed out on that genetic defect. Boy was I wrong though by that time after discussions as part of my vets pet owned discussion groups when I called for an appointment when I said it was her time I was told to get the the surgery and I will be seen by the next available vet after arriving.
Our 2 year old cat just died from this- or at least that’s what our vet said. We dropped him off for boarding while we went on a 5 day vacation. He was perfectly healthy when we dropped him off: no signs of lethargy, no changes in diet or water intake, no vomiting/diarrhea.. literally nothing we physically saw in him that denoted him being unhealthy. The vet mentioned he died from Urethral Obstruction that caused the kidney failure but I know he urinated at our home because I clean his litter box daily. The only problem with everything is we cant disprove what our vet is saying, that he used the bathroom during boarding and it came as a shock to even their trained eye. Does this even sound right?
