When Should I Take Off My Jiffy Greenhouse’S Lid?

To sow seeds or plant cuttings in a greenhouse, pull netting open, cover lightly, and firm down gently. Place a clear lid on the tray and keep the seedlings moist once the lid comes off. Young seedlings like the added humidity, so remove it as soon as they germinate and show dicot leaves. The RH with the lid on is about 70, and with it off it’s about 40. Air temperature with the lid on holds around 25 C but tent temp.

Water the bottom of the cup in water and leave it to soak until the top surface glistens with moisture. Remove, allow to drain, and put outdoors in the greenhouse. The lid provides humidity, but you can remove it anytime. Make sure your soil stays moist for germination and mist the plants. If new seedlings get leggy, adjust the light accordingly.

Once seeds have started to sprout, adjust the lid slightly and remove it once all seeds are sprouted and growing. Keep the pellets watered using a spray bottle to prevent overwatering. Once most seeds have sprouted, remove the cover and pour warm water into the bottom tray until the Jiffy Peat Pellets have expanded to around 7 times their original size. Pour off any excess water.

After all seeds have germinated, remove the greenhouse dome and apply plant markers where necessary. Remove the lids once the plant starts growing up as long as it doesn’t get cold by a window and maintains warmth. Once transplants are placed outdoors in the sun, never cover them with plastic, as sun exposure can burn the plastic plants.

  • THANK YOU for this! Some of us are new self-taught gardners who don’t read instructions or attend gardening classes, etc., and put lids on bc we’ve seen it done but not sure why. lol Some of us also have lost cauliflower and broccoli plants due to mold…from being overly wet and covered after the seedlings sprouted. All the lids are now OFF!
