When Should Houston Begin Cutting Hydrangeas?

Regular monitoring and care of hydrangeas in Houston are crucial for their long-term health. Space them 3 to 10 feet apart to allow proper air circulation. Big Leaf Hydrangeas are ideal for planting in mild weather from November. Preparing for winter involves removing all flowers and cutting back a third of their total height each spring. Hydrangeas root best from softwood cuttings taken through July-ish. However, do not prune or cut back shrubs after August 1st, as leaving fall blooms over the winter provides winter interest and ensures growth. In late winter or early spring, these shrubs can be cut all the way back to the ground. Smooth hydrangeas produce larger blooms if pruned hard. Pruning should only be done in June or July, and only if the shrubs are too large for their space. Dead stems or flowers can be removed anytime of the year. The best time to transplant hydrangeas is in fall or early spring, as dormancy is approaching.
