When Do Springtime Hydrangeas Begin To Grow?

In cold climate areas, hydrangeas are best planted in spring due to the gradual increase in daylight hours. Longer days trigger blooming in late spring, as they form flower buds the previous year. Hydrangeas grow best in well-drained soil, in a protected, dappled shady spot, with sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. South-facing positions are best avoided, and young hydrangeas should be protected.

The timing of hydrangea bloom depends on the types of hydrangeas being grown. New growth hydrangeas typically bloom in spring or summer, while hydrangea varieties that bloom on old wood typically flower in spring or summer. To ensure optimal results, add hydrangea feed to your hydrangeas in spring, sprinkle growmore on top of the soil, and add compost. Most new growth hydrangeas put on buds in early summer to bloom in the following spring, summer, and early fall seasons.

In hot climates, hydrangeas may stop blooming in spring, but they should revert to their usual green once the weather has warmed. Planting hydrangeas in early spring or fall is best, as long as the soil is workable and the hydrangeas bloom on new wood. Patience is necessary as they will sprout and grow over the next couple months or so.

Transplanting hydrangeas in fall or early spring is recommended as dormancy is approaching. Hydrangeas are just starting to get teeny leaves now, but won’t be full and in bloom until late summer. Plan to plant in the spring after the last frost or in the fall before the first frost to give the shrub plenty of time to grow.
