When Planting Peony, Do I Cover Them Completely?

When planting a container-grown peony, cover it no deeper than it grew in the pot and water thoroughly at the time of planting. The term “bare root” refers to a plant that is offered for sale with its roots exposed, rather than planted in a container with soil. Remember not to plant too deep; if the peony root is positioned deeper than 2 inches, it may grow well but won’t produce many blooms. Once the peony is set, backfill the hole and don’t cover it.

To ensure healthy growth for years to come, make sure the planting area is completely weed-free before starting. You can also add a layer of mulch a couple of months before planting to stop any seeds from germinating. Peonies are a classic garden plant famous for their huge and highly fragrant flowers. Caring for peonies is pretty easy and doesn’t require much work. Plant peonies in well-drained, slightly acidic soil, providing them with 1 to 2 inches of water weekly.

Peonies must be planted exactly at the crown of the plant (where the stem meets the root) in order to bloom. If the soil is covering the crown, your peony may not bloom. Start by digging a hole twice as deep as the plant and gently check the peony root for any settlements. Plant peonies in the fall when the plants are dormant and get them settled in to their planting holes about 4-6 weeks before a deep freeze hits your region.
