Ways To Secure Peony?

Peonies often fall over due to their weak stems, which can be easily fixed by tying one knee high around the plant. This simple fix can be done at the end of the season when the plant starts to die back. Peony’s Envy offers diagrams on its website for different ways to support peonies, including wire-ring tomato towers or peony support rings.

One of the most magnificent garden mainstays is the common herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora), which requires extra support for top-heavy peonies. To prevent flopping, insert 1-2 sturdy stakes on either side of exceptional large blooms and use soft plant ties or twist ties to gently support them.

Stakes and twine or hoop can be used to keep peony plants upright as they grow and give them additional support. Place strong metal or wood stakes around the perimeter of the peony row every 4-8 feet, then place the netting over the stakes, suspending it. Wrap the stem around it in a “U” shape and run back to the stake and around it once.

To ensure proper support, gather the plant up in your arms and tie one knee high around it. Use a stake and twine or hoop to keep your peony plants upright as they grow and give them additional support. Work your way around the plant, driving in one stake every 1-2 feet until you have made a circle around your peony. For staking, buy natural bamboo stakes and use twine or garden tape to make a hoop in-between and around the peony stems.
