Watering Kefir Grains?

Water kefir grains, also known as tibicos, can be grown and made into large quantities using clean, pure, and mineral-rich spring water, well water, or filtered water. The process involves mixing sugar and water together, cooling it to room temperature before adding the grains, and adding dried fruit for minerals. The kefir grains ferment over several days, producing a sweet but somewhat bland beverage with a natural soda pop taste.

Water kefir grains thrive on a mineral and carbohydrate-rich liquid diet, living in sugar water, fruit juices, coconut water, soy/almond/rice milk, or even honey. To make water kefir, mix 1 cup of kefir grains with 1 tablespoon of sugar in 2 cups of water and store it in the fridge once weekly. It is recommended to change the water every 2-3 weeks.

To make water kefir, pour 1/4 cup of sugar into a jar, add 1/2 cup of hot water, and stir to dissolve the sugar. Add 3 cups at room temperature or 250ml of non-chlorinated water to the jar per 20g of water kefir grains. For a larger volume of water kefir grains, add 2 tablespoons of sugar (molasses sugar) into 1 cup of boiling water and another cup of water.

To maintain the health benefits of water kefir, it is essential to switch to new sugar water every 24 to 48 hours to prevent them from running out of food. After culturing a batch, remove the grains and place them in fresh sugar water.
