Tiger Lilies: How To Transfer Them?

Tiger lilies are vibrant perennials that can bring a burst of color to any garden. To transplant them, follow these steps:

  1. Dig up the bulbs by cutting them down several inches away from their original location.
  2. Separate the bulbs if they are in a big clump.
  3. Check for rotten spots and discoloration.
  4. Prepare the bed, plant the bulbs, water them, and protect them.
  5. Transplant the lily plants in spring or fall, avoiding summer unless absolutely necessary.

To ensure optimal growth and vitality, divide and transplant them every few years, especially in early spring or late summer when the plant is dormant. Lilies produce from bulbs and need to be divided and transplanted in the fall for the best results. Experts recommend late September or early October as the best time to move lilies.

When transplanting a tiger lily bulb, keep as many of the roots intact as possible. Move the plant to a new location, plant at the same depth as before, backfill with soil, and water the plant so the roots can adjust to its new setting. Space the bulbs about 10-12 inches apart to give each plant enough room to grow and thrive.

Tiger lily bulbs can be dug up, separated, and transplanted in the fall as the leaves die back for the season. Check the soil for bulbs and bulbils as you dig and divide.

In summary, dividing and transplanting tiger lilies is crucial for their successful relocation and growth. Understanding the process, proper preparation, and proper care are essential for ensuring the longevity and health of these beautiful perennials.
