Hydrangeas require ample water to produce their beautiful blooms, but the frequency depends on the species, soil type, location in sun or shade, and climate. They should be watered once a month or so, especially if they are in containers. The right amount of water is essential for hydrangeas to thrive and form their beautiful flowers.
Hydrophusas need a deep drink of water one to two times a week during the growing season. Water them by sticking a finger about four inches into the ground and watering if it feels dry. Saturate the soil but do not leave it soggy. Deep weekly watering is usually enough if there is not enough rain, but may need more frequent watering in hot, dry weather.
Planting hydrangeas requires partial sun with full sun in the morning, followed by some afternoon shade. Once established, water them about one inch per week, spread across three watering sessions. The water should be evenly distributed at the roots and never over the top of the plant. Watering top down will encourage fungal disease and potentially harm the plant.
For more established hydrangeas, water when the first inch of soil feels dry to the touch. It is better to give the plant plenty of water a few days a week rather than a little every day. Keep the flowers dry when watering. Hydrangeas in the ground should be watered at least three times a week when planted to help establish a strong root system. Soak the hydrangea in water to hydrate the roots before planting it in the ground, then water copiously. Water frequently for several weeks afterward.
