I did a red zinnia and small sunflower bouquet this weekend . I wish I could show you a picture, it looked stunning. I did flowers for trial bouquets the first time this year. I did cosmos, Zinnia, gladiola and a few others, like bachelor button and for-get-me-not . My favorite were the zinnia, they lasted the longest in a bouquet. For a bit of white highlighter I used carrot flowers. Cut of the tops of carrots and once they start growing they will start making blooms soon 🙂
I don’t know if you can grow there, and they are expensive but love gladiolas. As for a perennial filler, yarrow (comes in about 3 colors I think) is great. Love mixing ostrich ferns in the spring bouquets…bonus is you can eat the fiddle heads in the spring. I am in zone 3b so very short growing season. I am surprised that roses don’t make an appearance on the farm…but as you suggested, don’t over do it the first years. Quite like lilacs and peonies, but they don’t last long. So many nice flowers out there.
