Sunflowers, known for their ability to track the sun in the sky, stop following the sun as they grow older. This process is known as heliotropism, which helps the leaves absorb more sunlight and allow the sunflower to face the sun. Younger flower heads exhibit this characteristic because they have green “bracts” that resemble a mane. The phototropic response, where proteins called phototropins sense blue light falling unevenly on a seedling, redistributes the plant’s growth hormones.
Sunflowers turn their flowers toward the sun over the course of a day due to the warmth it provides. The best-known response is the phototropic response, where proteins called phototropins sense blue light falling unevenly on a seedling and redistribute the plant’s growth hormones. However, when a sunflower is pollinated, it ceases solar tracking. This supports the idea that the reason sunflowers turn their flowers toward the sun is for the warmth.
On cloudy days, immature sunflowers use a growth hormone called auxin, which is sensitive to sunlight. When the sun shines, the auxin moves towards the sun. Researchers suggest that the young plant’s sun-tracking (also called heliotropism) can be explained by circadian rhythms. Most plants show phototropism, the ability to grow toward a light source. Sunflowers face the rising sun because increased morning warmth attracts more bees and helps the plants reproduce more efficiently.

Do sunflowers turn towards the sun True or false?
Phototropism is defined as the growth movement of a sunflower, which causes it to bend towards the sun’s direction. This type of growth is distinct from geotropism, which is caused by the gravitational pull. In contrast, chemotropism is a chemical stimulus-driven phenomenon, whereas phototropism is influenced by the direction of sunlight. Both types of growth are essential for the optimal development of the sunflower.
What does an overwatered sunflower look like?
Overwatering a plant can lead to yellow or brown limp, droopy leaves, root rot, dropping old and new leaves, mushy or unstable stems, and rotten odors. This is because the roots can no longer absorb water, and the plant’s leaves can be green, brown, or yellow. The shedding leaves can also indicate overwatering. It is crucial to monitor and address these issues to ensure the plant’s health and longevity.
Why be a sunflower and turn towards the sun?
In this passage, Senegalese director Ousmane Sembène elucidates the significance of emulating the sunflower’s orientation towards the sun, likening himself to the celestial body.
Why are my sunflowers facing down?
Insufficient water can cause sunflowers to wilt and droop their heads, while overwatering can lead to root suffocation or nutrient imbalance. Weak plants can also cause the stem to not support the flower, causing it to droop or slump over. Additionally, not enough sunlight can be detrimental to the blooms, as sunflowers naturally orient themselves toward the sun, a phenomenon known as heliotropism. Insufficient sunlight can cause the heads to droop as they try to maximize sun exposure.
How to revive droopy sunflowers?
Sunflower stems are thick and require a lot of water, which can cause them to droop due to insufficient water intake. Air can get trapped in the tips of the stems, causing the stem to lose its water tension and droop. To revive drooping sunflowers, cut an inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle and place them back in cold, fresh water. They should perk up within 24 hours. Ensure you have the correct vase, as sunflowers are best displayed in a tall vase.
If you don’t have a tall vase, cut the stems down so the head is 2-3 cm above the rim to support the heads. If your sunflowers don’t perk up after 24 hours, contact us or visit our Flower Care Essentials page.
What is the quote about sunflowers facing the sun?
Despite the prevailing darkness, sunflowers are able to discern and utilize the light of the sun, thereby instilling in them a sense of optimism and resilience. They exemplify the virtues of patience and persistence, illustrating that even in the face of adversity, there is always a glimmer of hope.
Can sunflowers get too much sun?
The common sunflower, a species of great botanical significance, is susceptible to wilting as a result of prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures and ultraviolet radiation during the summer months. To prevent excessive heat, it may be beneficial to cover the plants with a green shaded net, particularly during the summer months, in order to protect the leaves and flowers.
Can sunflowers change direction?
The sun’s daily trajectory, from east to west, is a phenomenon that may initially seem peculiar but is nevertheless aesthetically pleasing.
What is the superstition about sunflowers?
Sunflowers are a popular symbol of summer and energy, with their colorful bud resembling the sun and following it during the day. This connection has led to various superstitions and traditions associated with the flower. Some common ones include the sun’s power to bring strength and luck, planting sunflowers around the house to bring luck, and placing a cut flower under a pillow at night to reveal the truth over the next day. The colorful and vibrant nature of sunflowers has led to the emergence of various superstitions and traditions associated with the flower.
Are sunflowers supposed to face the sun?
A study by researchers at the University of California, Davis, found that sunflowers face east in the morning due to increased morning warmth, which attracts more bees and helps the plants reproduce more efficiently. The research, published in New Phytologist, suggests that sunflowers face east because they produce more offspring. Sunflowers’ heads turn back and forth to track the sun during the day, which is controlled by the plant’s internal circadian clock. This study highlights the importance of balancing morning warmth and plant development for optimal sunflower growth.
Why do sunflowers stop following the sun?
Young sunflower stems grow more at night, bending eastward, while during the day, the stem’s east side grows, causing a swaying motion to the west. As sunflowers mature, their growth slows down, and older plants settle on facing east. This orientation gives the flower a head start on warming up, which attracts more pollinating insects like bees. Researchers found that stationary blooms attracted upwards of five times more pollinators when compared to mature flowers facing west all day.

Has the sun changed in some way? I am asked by a farmer if soemthing is going on with the giver of light. LINK: Farming in the old …
Hello from Nova Scotia, Canada. I am 75 years old. When I was a young child the sky was a beautiful blue and the Sun was yellow and the clouds were white and fluffy but not anymore. Now hardly ever see a clear blue sky, the Sun is sooooooo white you cannot look at it and don’t get me going on the so called clouds we see nowadays. They sure did a job on our planet and the sky.
It’s August! It’s supposed to be high summer – hot, dry and dusty with blue skies, warm nights and yellowing grass, not cold days with near-constant featureless grey cloudy skies with attending rain. This odd weather phenomenon isn’t natural or normal. And it isn’t just affecting the UK but most of the planet. The fact that the press hasn’t commented on it suggests there is something very strange going on that we’re not supposed to know about.
We’ve noticed a lot of spiders around the outside of the windows of our cottage this year. Then, it dawned on us that there is a definite lack of birds this year. Normally we have house sparrows and other small garden birds who naturally keep the spider population down. We’re always getting sprayed from above and no two days worth of weather are the same. It’s like one extreme to the other As for the 🌞, yes 🙌 indeed, the sun has changed colour. It’s now a strong white and so bright it hurts your eyes to look anywhere near it. I remember it being a golden yellow as a child growing up in the 60’s.
I’m from South Africa. Just a week ago my wife and I went to a nature reserve for a hike. Although it was a warm day for winter, 26 degrees celcius, we found the sun to not carry much heat, but our skin were burning like a chemical burn, even under our clothes. This happened again since then. The skin did not turn red like it used to do in the sun, it just felt like a burn. Must have something to do with the geoengineering spray and how it affects the sun rays.
Thank you for talking about this! I thought I was seeing things. I’m from Maĺaysia and I noticed the same thing over here since a month ago. It’s super white light and it hurts my eyes. I asked my husband if he noticed that the sun is super glaringly white. He agreed it’s different. It’s possibly due to the silver dust they are sprqying in the skies.
The sun is whiter than when I was young…I’m 76 years old …avid gardener and I do tan…but here’s something I have noticed since I’m outside a lot the sun isn’t setting in the correct place for this time of year ( Aug.25th 2024) it should be setting more northwest and it’s setting to far southwest…may God and His Magnificent Son be with us All in these last days 🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻
I took love the smell of pipe tobacco, reminds me of my late Father. I have noticed what you say about the sun and concluded it is because we are looking at it through a chemical film. I do believe as Christian myself that there is a Higher Authority and that is God. It says in the bible, he laughs at the plans of the wicked. God will only allow so much before He calls time, and I believe firmly Jesus is coming back very soon .Call on His name and be saved.
I was telling my friend as we sat sun bathing in my garden about something wasn’t right with the sun and laughed as I called it a fake sun. I explained to her that I usually get a tan within an hour of sitting in the sun but having sat in it all day I didn’t get any tan whatsoever which is unusual for me as I tan very quickly. She just laughed along with my partner as if I was losing the plot. Thanks for the article, I’m going to forward it to my friend to prove that I’m not losing the plot and yes their is something strange about the FAKE sun.
Guys, please look at your surroundings, have you noticed lots of trees randomly dead or dying? Seems to be mainly sycamore but seems to be affecting other genus’. Young and medium sized trees. It’s very strange and highly irregular, I do several hundred miles per week and see it everywhere I go and it’s concerning me greatly, Has anybody else noticed? Everybody I’ve asked hadn’t noticed until I brought it to their attention.
I live In Texas near the coast. I’ve always known when we travel to my hometown about 138 miles from here, that it will be hotter because it’s dryer. The sun has been more intense and noticed not as many birds. What really stands out is I haven’t noticed the sound of the cicadas. We have always heard them. Something is definitely off.
I’m in Halifax Nova Scotia Canada 🇨🇦 and I can see literal “gasoline rainbows 🌈” around it. It’s absolutely WHITE HOT 🥵 and even leaving strange burn patterns on my skin. Idk 🤷🏽♀️ if it’s just Chemtrails or a FAKE SUN… which is 7 times hotter than the “real sun” ☀️ according to “Google….” But SOMETHING IS UP.
I don’t catch the sun either anymore! I sat out in it earlier this week for hours with no sun cream and barely caught anything, and it was about 28 degrees! It’s all so weird! But I think you’re right, Richard – even on a bright, beautiful, clear sunny day, the blue sky is not the bright blue it used to be! It’s a hazy blue so something nefarious is in our atmosphere!
I live in Glasgow, i can’t afford all the malarky to cleanse the water, its also got chlorine supposedly to clean it up. However what i do, pour water into a jug, leave to settle, tell the water you love it etc. Its all i can do to help me to stay as safe as i can. Water is an energy and i believe as its forced through pipes etc to pour from our taps its impirtant to do all the above. It may be useless but it makes me feel as if I’m helping. Remember it goes back into the ocean eventually so the more love infused into it then its obvious it will be recycled with the live vibration. Love from Glasgow Scotland ❤
yesterday it would rain and stop all day. I later drove 60mi and observed mystical cloud formations like in a hobbit movie. I then seen a complete rainbow, ran into a rain shower from one big cloud AND the sun came out now low in blue sky and the rainbow became VERY bright in the rain. When the rain stopped a minute later the road was completely dry. It was like a article game. Some clouds were upright. I am a ex pilot and never seen so many various clouds//spaces//types in one sky…..with ground to ground rainbow all at once.
Word association, the moment you mentioned the smell of your grandad’s house I could remember the smell of old drum tobacco my grandad used to smoke. He was a real country boy, and he used to sit in his chair, clean out his pipe and load up, then peal an onion with the same knife and eat it like an apple. If you’re wondering, he had 13 children. I still eat lots of raw onion myself. An apple a day keeps the doctor away but an onion a day keeps everyone away!
I am 65 and my mother is 85. We both have had conversations about the sun changing. Nit only how it looks but how the sky looks as well. Not only that but it is in a completely different location now. It is rising in a different area than it always had. I see it in different areas in the sky that I have never seen it before. I have lived in this house for 17 years and it always would rise in the same areas depending on the season. Now it is totally different.
I live in Athens Greece I was near the areas that burned in the fires last week The day the fire started Before it reached the mountain of Penteli I was outside and I saw the sun going from white to yellow to orange to red and then back again to orange, yellow and white in the course of about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Im 64 and this year has been so weird. My base is Northern Ireland, Never experienced in my life time I had to put on an aran sweater in the middle of August. In the past six weeks, its like the sun is blocked and there is a big sheet of rice paper above the sky, blocking out the sun. Rare to see a blue sky. Its just not normal.
Come to Johannesburg, South Africa. It’s our winter here and we have not had a cloud in the sky for weeks. Yes it is a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings, but the weeks and weeks of beautiful clear blue skies and daytime temperatures in the early twenties is really somenting to behold. Stunning place to live!!!
I stay in South-Africa. I have been paying attention to the sun for many years. For many years I was working outside. I noticed a change in the sun around 2014. speak to a lot of of people working in the sun. They all agree the sun is different. When you pass schools children they use umbrellas to shield from the sun. Since October last year i noticed silver cars clearcoat is peeling off and it is getting exponentially worse.
The garden birds have all but disappeared and have stopped singing here where I live in Oxfordshire, and there are no insects at all – not even wasps around the windfall apples and plums lying on the ground. Today there is an ubiquitous white hazy sky with very dim sunlight – I wonder if this could this could be due to the Gates chemical cloud he has threatened to spray high in the stratosphere…it feels eerie and lifeless.
I’ve also noticed the sun seems to be setting in a different place (more northerly) than it was when I was a child (I’ve lived in this town all my life) and also earlier, I remember as a kid running round the streets at 10.30-11pm in full daylight during the summer but now it’s dark by them almost every night.
Here on the west coast of Ireland, we’ve had the worst summer in years… stunted grass-growth & dark days with little sunshine… to the point where some farmers were putting out winter silage bales to feed cattle just fresh off the slats… personally, I haven’t had to cut the grass very often this year either !!… God knows wtf “they” are doing to the planet, Richard… 😎👍☘️🍻
I know the weather can be unpredictable and gloomy at the best of times (I live in southern England) however on the very first lockdown I remember almost everyday the weather was very bright sunny and unsually hot for long periods. It was most unusual and bizarre and as if we were purposely tormented
A tan? I live in the jungle on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines! My legs below my shorts are tan and I just silently burned my face today be outside most of the day! But your right, it’s emitting something that’s causing my mind to forget. I mean like several times per day! I’m constantly trying to focus my thoughts to stay trained on the task at hand, but my mind just keeps wandering off…Then I stop and have to refocus again. It’s like I’m losing my mind. Huh! Maybe I am?
I´ve noticed the sky here in south Andalucia seems not to be the usual rich deep blue which contrasts beautifully with the white buildings, but somehow paler over the past few years. When there are no clouds at night, the stars still seem dimmed. I see few chemtrails. Rather odd that there are virtually no flies this year, nor greenfly in the garden.
I am very happy with your relaxed articles Richard. i also enjoy and feel encouraged and fired up by your interesting conversations with some enlightened guests. I do follow up and do some research from many of them as I want to be sure they are giving you genuine advice and can back it up. But thank you for all you do, and keep doing it! 🙂
I was at a BBQ the other day and someone who is a sheep said look at the sun it looks weird. I explained to her about bill gates (actually all countries apart from 1) using reflective material to prevent climate change to which she looked bedazzled and I was smiling. You could literally see a rainbow type colour when you looked at it like it was reflecting back the light. Pretty obvious but hard to explain.
Deepest solar minimum for 200 or so years. You can now tell. Lower uv, means less tanning and plant growth. Sunlight this year has more infrared in it. Has anyone also noticed the sunlight also feels hotter on the skin. That will dry out plant leaves. I agree the sunlight also appears less yellow and appears whiter than I have ever seen it in uk. A bad winter coming, perhaps. Cheer up though. Nature’s cycle will ensure things will be much, much better next year; when we will really need our sun tan lotion.
Last weekend I was in Kent and it was beautiful and I got a tan easily. I also saw 4 planes in the sky leaving the usual chemtrails, however this time the trails vanished quickly! Now the issue here is that there are BOTH contrails and chemtrails. The moral of the story is that you have to watch the skies carefully so you get a clearer picture of exactly what is going on. article with time lapse is essential to catch the chem trails because some are just vapour trails!
The SUN is at or very close cycle 25 Solar Maximum. It is a Quite energetic Maximum therefore the it’s surface will be more hot and therefore more White. To date there have been more Sunspots this year the highest amount for 20year. There are some Very large Sunspots on the way this week. Think Carrington event.
I have thought this…..Even my 7 year old granddaughter has commented about it….and she has also asked why is the sky always so bright,as it hurts her eyes and makes her squint ….I do hope she stays this Awake before all the manipulation and mistruths of many in this word change her utterly spot on perception.
Living in Ontario Canada, I’ve been noticing this for the last 5 years or so, but more and more in the last 3 years… the sun does not have the same brightness it used to. Even on completely blue sky days, it is definitely not the same as before. I remember in 2020, they really ramped up with dumping who-knows-what into the air. And it continues til today… 😡
Yes Richard the Sun has changed and it occurred soon after the last eclipse. I am a sungazer and can no longer look at the Sun for one second were previously I could last for minutes at s time..This new sun is illuminous White no longer yellow or Orange..The artificle sun theory is starting to make sense.
I live in Wisconsin. I noticed a change in the bugs and birds in 2020. Every year since, things have become more and more “off.” This year, 2024, I have noticed things that would normally be washed clean by the rain are dirtier after it rains; the trails are happening more often and consistently, and even on sunny days, the sky has a haze.
Hey Richard. Just going to leave a quiet message here. I spent the majority of my 69 years believing that the sun was a god and earth was a sentient being. Then I became aware of the one God that created us all. I can highly recommend searching for him. My life has been transformed from worrying about what is happening in the world, to being happy and content in the knowledge of what it s all about. Jesus. Give it a go.
I remember as a kid the sun was yellow. I lived about an hour and a half south of Dallas Texas, I wonder if maybe I was looking at the sun through some pollution from the factories? I know that the air is cleaner than it was in the ’60s and ’70s. But I can confirm that the sun is now bright white when it used to be yellow from my own observation. I’m 62 years old.
Im sure if anyone thinks about this can remember people girls laying out on lawns catching Sun Ray’s some times more than an hour or so and not move much?? Ok i was pulling weeds in my garden last year the sun was at my back and I had a shirt and jeans on well i wasn’t out there but just a few minutes and it felt like i was burning right through my clothes i had to get out of the direct sun fast!
Enjoying this relaxed kind of article 👍🤗 it keeps the high vibes up! Plus, important information re the water and sunlight, vitamin D, more please! The thing nowadays is to stay informed as much as is necessary, but not so much to go into fear. A delicate balance, because what we focus on, we also give energy to. ✨
in Perth Australia, we used to avoid the hot sun if possible between 11 and one pm. Now the hottests time can be 4 in the afternoon. Get very burnt. Its just the alluminium particles reflecting and bouncing energy back and forth intensifying energy. The lower afternoon angle has more alluminium salts and sulphates than noon positopn.
Have any of you heard of sun simulators. I saw articles about them a while back. Massive great things that were developed. There was a new one being built in Germany when I saw the images and patents about it. The sun was always known as being a yellow/gold colour since I was little and in recent years not months, it looks so bright white and fake looking. I’ve got a good tan from gardening though so don’t know why the farmer hasn’t.
I’m a photographer and often take photos of sun and moonrises.. There is so much more cloud these days and rarely find the clear conditions I used to see or the fantastic skies at sunrise. Always a haze, always some form of cloud barrier, etc. The sun definitely looks whiter and brighter and heat feels different. So much chemtrail and sun halos during the day. Definitely all of the geo management (manipulation) that the world controllers and doing to us!! Horrible
The Suns ‘energy’ has certainly changed. I was born and lived in the sun ..hours of ‘sky engineering’ vids on my phone ..water,I pay attention to potable water(filtration) ..I have water test kits that got my attention a few years ago ..Baja salt ..what I see is sublimation ~ sun, water, air, its an assault ..oh ! Sorry,I like my tobacco too ..Good Sunday to You ~
There are many articles out there that suggest that the sun we have isn’t the one we used to have. There’s a guy on different platforms with a website called Crow777 that talks about this. Richie From Boston has covered it as well. The “eclipse” we had wasn’t what we were told either. Thank you Richard.
Enjoying your casts Vobesy! Hope I can call you that. I’m in geelong, a city down south in Victoria Australia. A lot of people commenting here on the white sun. You know how when the sun shines through gaps in the clouds you’ll see the beems of light spreading out at varying angles from the light source? I would have thought if the sun was 93 million miles away, all the light beams would shine straight down, maybe at a slight, inconceivable angle that would be impossible to distinguish. Seems to me that the sun, or what ever it is now, is a lot closer than NASA are telling us . In not a flat earther, but have an open mind on the subject. No one has convinced me it is a ball yet.
Four or five years ago around in the summer time around half past three …quarter to four in the morning it was just becoming light when two pairs of planes in a straight line flew over my house spewing chemtrails …there was two to my left side and two just in my line of sight and they were flying much lower than usual. When do you ever see more than one (boeing type) plane flying together …never yet i saw four together
What is the purest source water you’ve drank? It has to have some movement to be great. Water is neither created nor destroyed. Same amount of water for all time. It cleans itself, as it evaporates, then rains down. Beautiful. Your conversations are uplifting – Loved the farming photos – Thanks for sharing! Edmonton Alberta
After reading some of the comments I’m happy to report, that here in central Europe, Slovenia, we still have a wonderful summer. Clear skies, a little dryer then usual but here is plenty of fruits and veggies, more then usual. I was working outside a lot and got a normal tan. Also my solar plant is working normally, but it needs mostly IR spectrum so if any of UV was blocked, I wouldn’t notice it. I hope it stays this way.
I did a Google search the other day about the daylight, regarding any changes noticed, but nothing really showed. Then I saw your article. Lately I had noticed a couple of times the change in light during the day. The shadows would be strange for the time of day and the contrast was off to what I was used to. It may be just me.
The earths magnetic field is weakening. More of the rays are coming through and it is more active. Interestingly I am not getting a tan either given the amount of energy that is coming off the sun. The sun spots are throwing out quite large amounts of energy. Seeing the norhern lights here is also a pointer toward this.
