My Orchids Are Sticky; Why Is That?

Orchids have sticky leaves that help them capture prey, such as small insects, for nourishment. This trapping mechanism is known as “leaf pitfall trapping”. Sticky sap on orchid leaves can be caused by insects or the orchid itself. If the entire leaf becomes sticky with other blemishes, you likely have some pest issue. Sometimes, a black smut accompanies the sticky residue.

Orchid sap, or orchid nectar, is generally excreted by healthy plants and is common in Phalaenopsis. Avid gardeners know that sticky substances on plants are often the secretions, or honeydew, of insect pests such as aphids, mealybugs, or scale insects. Although these pests certainly can cause a sticky substance on orchid plants, there is a natural sap that is produced by some orchid flowers and buds.

If the sticky/sweet substance on your orchid leaves is not guttation, it could be damage from mites, aphids, scale, or thrips. It is normal for some varieties and called “Happy Sap”. If the orchid is happy with its environment, temperature, and humidity, it will not experience any issues.

There are two possible causes of sticky or sticky sap on orchid leaves: insects or the natural exudate or secretions, also known as honeydew. The exact cause is still unknown, but many believe it to be a lure to draw in pollinators. If you encounter a sticky residue on your plant, it’s most likely the result of cooler fall temperatures.
