Hydrangeas thrive in rich, porous, somewhat moist soils. To grow them successfully, add compost to enrich poor soil and space multiple hydrangeas about 3 to 4 feet apart. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and twice as wide, set the plant in the hole, backfill with the compost, gently filling around the root ball, and water deeply with root stimulator.
There are five types of Hydrangeas that grow successfully in Louisiana, many of which are color changeable. Pruning and planting directions are essential for hydrangeas to bloom and grow well in morning sun and afternoon shade. The Louisiana Super Plant program is an educational resource for hydrangeas.
Hydrangeas bloom on new growth and can be shapelier and bloom better if pruned back by about one-third in February or March. Planting hydrangeas in areas with morning sun and afternoon shade is recommended for happy, healthy hydrangeas in Louisiana. Most varieties will flush out blooms with 2-4 hours of sunlight.
To plant hydrangeas, locate them in a spot where they receive some shade during the day, with morning sun being preferred. Filtered shade is acceptable as long as it is protected from the intense sun during the heat of the day. Plant hydrangeas in the spring or fall, but avoid the hottest part of summer. Always use root stimulator for faster establishment.
Hydrangea flowers will be blue or purple when grown in acidic soil (pH below 7) or pink or red in alkaline soil (pH about 7). Plant hydrangea plants in an area with full morning sun and partial sunlight after midday to protect them from the afternoon heat. Hydrangeas love rich, well-draining soil but require regular watering. Most types love afternoon shade in the late October or November when the weather cools.
