Hydrangea Care Instructions For Cut Flowers?

Hydrangeas are not only beautiful outdoors but also make great cut flowers for vases and floral arrangements. To keep them looking fresh in a vase, grow these hydrangeas for cut flowers and learn how to make them last in the vase and dry them for a year-round bouquet. Martha Stewart shares a genius hydrangea cutting trick to make them last longer in a vase.

To revive hydrangeas, cut mature hydrangeas at a diagonal angle with sharp clippers and remove all leaves on the stems or at least all the leaves below the water line before placing them in a vase. Slightly warm (tepid) water is preferred, and the stems should be cut at a diagonal angle with sharp clippers for the best results.

When cutting hydrangeas, it’s best to cut them in cool morning temps when they are fully hydrated. If you can water them the day before, that’s even better. Cut stems at an angle, put them in water right away, and gently mist petals once per day. Place freshly cut hydrangea flowers in a bucket of cool water to soak for an hour or two before arranging your hydrangea bouquet.

After trimming the stems at a 45-degree angle, dip the cut ends into alum powder before placing them in a vase of fresh water. Dip the cut stems into a 1/2 inch of potassium aluminum sulfate, or alum powder, and keep the cut hydrangea flowers out of direct sunlight. Dunk wilted blooms and give the petals a boost of hydration by submerging the entire head of the bloom in a large bowl of room temperature water for 5 minutes.
