Coco coir, a husk from a coconut’s inner shell, is a popular choice for hydroponic systems due to its water retention properties, proper drainage, and resistance to root rot. It is known for its ability to hold onto moisture but also provides more air than similar materials, allowing plant roots to thrive. When mixed with perlite, coco coir provides an ideal amount of water and air for cannabis plants.
To water coco coir, follow these simple steps: hydrate it, fluffing it up, and planting your plants. Watering should be done every four or five days, using a pot that provides good drainage. If you get more water, lower the frequency. Once in final containers, aim to give water every 1-2 days. By the time plants are vegging along, water 2 to 3 times daily and up to 5 times a day in flower.
When first using coco coir, let it absorb as much water as it needs. If you notice that a brick of coco coir doesn’t absorb water well, start by watering once per day and observe the moisture of the coco in the pots for a few days. Riococo recommends a fertigation program designed to achieve 15-20 runoff, which is calculated by calculating the total volume of daily irrigation and the percentage of runoff.
Water until pots are saturated, then wait for the pot to get light and water again. This process is similar to soil but not allowed the pot to get quite saturated. Overall, coco coir is a versatile and effective medium for growing cannabis plants.
