How To Take Care Of Peonies Once Their Blooming Season Is Over?

Peonies are a plant part of the genus Paeonia and belong to the family Paeoniaceae. They have around 33 species, but their native habitat is the habi. After peony blooms, it is crucial to take proper care of them to ensure their longevity. This includes deadheading the flowers, fertilizing the plants, checking for pests and diseases, and allowing the foliage to brown naturally.

The first step in caring for peonies after they bloom is to trim the spent blooms to promote new growth. Mulching is another important step, as it helps prevent the fungus from surviving colder winter temperatures and affecting new growth in the spring. At the end of the season, snip some flowers and dry them for floral arrangements or scoop up clean petals for potpourri.

Post-bloom peony care includes pruning out old and dead wood, reshaping the plant in the summer, and fertilizing with a general-purpose, slow-release fertilizer when small shoots come out of the ground (bone meal). Once a peony bloom begins to fade, it should be removed from the plant. Cut back the plant to about 6 inches above the ground, remove any dead or diseased leaves or stems, and dispose of the cuttings in a garbage bag.

Furthermore, the soil around the peonies needs to be slightly moist constantly, and they need to be watered every 6 days. Groot and Groot: Buy peonies all year-round, and aim to cut peonies back to around an inch from the ground to keep the plant healthy and free of disease.
