To keep hydrangeas fresh in a bouquet, submerge the stem of each flower in water and store them in a refrigerator until needed for the bouquet, boutonniere, or arrangement. Prepare floral arrangements as close to the wedding as possible and return the arranged hydrangeas to the refrigerator until the wedding.
To prevent and reverse wilting in hydrangea bouquets, buy hydrangeas no more than three days before the wedding. Mist hydrangea petals often to keep them looking alive and hydrated. Watering your plants daily is essential for their survival, especially during the first couple of years.
Clip stems at an angle and put cut stems in water right away. Gently mist petals once per day. If the blooms start to wilt, shock them back by dunking the whole flower head in warm water for a few minutes. Use the Boiling Water Method: Boil water and pour it into a cup. Stand the stems of the wilted hydrangeas in this water for 30 seconds. Fill a sink with cool water and completely submerge them for 45 minutes. Hydrangeas draw in water through their leaves and petals.
For premature wilting, submerge the flowers in a water bath for a minimum of 45 minutes. Keep the hydrangeas in a high humid environment with very little air velocity. Dip the cut stem in a jar of Alum powder and change the water after a few days. Keep the cut hydrangea flowers out of direct sunlight.
Submerge all hydrangea heads into a tub full of water for 20-30 minutes. Cut about 5cm from the stem and immediately place the stem in the boiling water and leave them there.
