How To Maintain Big Peony?

This post discusses the importance of supporting peonies, a plant known for its beauty and toughness in various garden zones. Peony rings were invented to provide support for larger flowering varieties, and proper care is crucial for promoting stronger stems. To prevent peonies from flopping over due to their large, heavy flowers on long stems, it is recommended to use DIY peony cages.

To support peonies, create a strong root system by ensuring sufficient space for growth. If planting multiple peonies, corral the entire plant using canes or metal rods and several rows of jute twine or thin garden netting to secure the peonies securely. Corralling is the most cost-effective way to support peonies, starting with pushing 4 to 6 strong stakes into the ground around the plant’s perimeter.

In spring, pound 5-6 4-foot bamboo stakes around the perimeter of the plant a few inches deep and use garden twine to tie them around. This will keep the plants upright as they grow and give them additional support. Some gardeners recommend adding supports in the fall after cutting back the plants, so they are already present in the springtime when the plants start.

For each peony, insert five stakes equidistant from each other, just on the outside edge of the clump. Take a piece of jute twine and tie it to one of the peony’s stems. This will help prevent the peony from slipping to the ground and ensure that the plant has sufficient space to grow.
