Catmint, also known as Nepeta x faassenii ‘Cats Meow’ (Catmint), is a vigorous herbaceous perennial with small, grey-green, aromatic leaves and spikes of sky blue flowers with purple centers. Its long bloom time makes it an ideal low-maintenance plant for garden borders or beds. The plant is known for its neat and tidy habit, making it perfect for containers, borders, herb gardens, and pollinator gardens.
To grow catmint, it is recommended to grow it in sunny borders or raised beds in free-draining soil. Pot-grown plants can be purchased at any time of year, but spring or autumn are ideal times to plant. Trim back faded plants when they have faded.
Catmint is heat and drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, highly fragrant, and beloved by pollinators. It requires full sun exposure, at least six hours of sunlight each day, which encourages abundant flowering and healthy growth. The plant performs well in average to poor soil conditions, provided the soil is well-drained.
For watering, provide regular water during the first growing season. Catmint is drought-tolerant once the root system is established, needing little or no water. It performs best in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Provide light afternoon shade in warm summer areas.
For maintenance and pruning, shear flower heads and water catmint plants regularly until they become well-established. Mulch helps retain moisture and keep down weeds. Catmint blooms typically from late spring to early summer into early fall, although some varieties bloom earlier and longer. Watering is essential for maintaining the plant’s health and beauty.

I just trimmed back my catmint yesterday! I’m down in SE Michigan and I think I have Walker’s Low and it was really due for a haircut, lol. It’s floppy because of the rain so maybe, next year, I’ll divide it. Nepeta makes a great companion plant for roses, I have mine with my roses and some pink gaura. Looks pretty good, if I say so myself, lol. If I ever get up your way, I will definitely stop in and do some shopping 🙂
