Bird of Paradise plants require specific care to ensure their health and longevity. To care for them, follow these steps:
- Look for waxed paper bags on each inflorescence and paper wrapper on each bunch to protect the flowers from handling and drying out.
- Unpack your Bird of Paradise immediately and recut the flowers.
- Water your Bird of Paradise according to its light, temperature, humidity preferences and any additional care it might need.
- Cut off the spent flower at the flower’s base if the plant looks healthy.
- Plant your Bird of Paradise in a slightly pot-bound container with 1-2 inches of space between the roots and wall of the pot to encourage blooming.
- Plant in a well-draining potting mix.
- Learn about growing birds of paradise plants, including water, fertilizer, soil, sunlight, pest control, and more.
- Enjoy your Strelitzias for up to 2 weeks by cutting stems at a good angle, placing them in clean vase and water, and not using cut flower food.
- Ensure the correct ambient temperature (maximum 20°C) and avoid placing Strelitzias in drafts, full sun, near stoves, or next to fruit bowls.
- Place newly cut stems in a solution of HydraFlor 100 hydrating treatment or deep, warm water mixed with a floral preservative before storage or usage.
- Properly water your Bird of Paradise by thoroughly wetting the soil mix and allowing the soil to dry slightly before watering again.
- Avoid leaving cut flowers in direct sun light, near a radiator, drafts, or near fruit, as gas used to ripen fruit can harm most flowers.

I shouldn’t complain because I couldn’t have done a article like this myself but I have to agree with most people here that this was worthless. I wanted to learn how to trim back several overgrown BOP plants and was especially looking for images around the base of the plant. Instead the most time spent on any one image is twirling a pretty BOP blossom back and forth.
My bird of paradise is really struggling. It’s indoors, gets bright indirect light, I water it every couple of weeks but the soil just won’t dry out, and the leafs have dry brown spots on it. Recently this week, I watered it and one of the leaves started turning yellow. Any suggestion? Zone 7ish Tennessee
Could you do a article on when, where to look for seed pods for white and orange birds and how to germinate them. I’m in S. Florida & have a massive 20 yr old orange bird. The original plant was from Texas which has never grown a seed pod that I know of. i’ve never had seeds and want to know why. I fertilized 3xyr and it blooms flowers in fall.
The garden is wonderful and clean amazing plant The strange thing is that the bird of paradise is one of the most expensive plants!!? I do not know why?! I live in Iraq and the weather is long and hot. The farmers advised me not to cover the bird of paradise until it adapts to the heat and becomes strong.
That was completely unhelpful. I have a plant with good looking flowers and some dead flowers at the top but the stems are nice and green – you don’t give any information on how to properly prune this stuff. Also it looks like you’re just holding 2 cut plants thru the article not even sure what we’re looking at.
