How To Give Freshly Planted Bermuda In Phoenix Water?

Water Bermuda grass in Phoenix early in the morning, 2-3 times a week during summer, and adjust watering based on soil moisture and seasonal changes to keep it healthy in the desert climate. Look for signs of water stress in Bermuda grass like discoloration, wilting, and thatch accumulation, and use smart irrigation methods to conserve water and maintain a vibrant lawn. By watering only once every three days, you promote deeper root growth and make your lawn more water efficient. In winter, Bermuda-grass lawns go dormant and need no supplemental watering. If overseed with ryegrass, water every 3 to 7 days.

Signs of under-watering include Bermuda grass turning bluish-grey and not springing back. Watering requirements for Bermuda grass are relatively high, especially during the establishment phase, and it is important to water deeply and infrequently. The best time to plant Bermuda grass in Arizona is between April 1 and October 1. The Arizona Republic provides a lawn watering guide each day on its weather page, and a UA Meteorological can determine the appropriate amount of water for a lawn.

Bermuda grass needs regular watering during the hot Arizona summer, ideally between 5 am and 10 am, to reduce evaporation and prevent diseases. Water pop-up heads 3-5 minute cycles 4-6 times per day to keep the seed moist for 2-3 weeks without puddling too much. When using rotating sprinkler heads, longer water cycles may be required.

Deep and infrequent watering is better than frequent and shallow watering. Bermuda grass does best with deep watering during the cool morning hours before 5:00 a.m. To keep the top 1-inch of soil moist enough for germination, recommend 4-5 short watering cycles.

Grass seeds take seven to ten days to germinate. Water newly planted Bermuda sod 4 to 5 times daily, for 5 to 10 minutes, in the first two weeks. Reduce to one time a day for the following week. Bermuda grass should be watered every 6 days (if overseeding), and ryegrass every 3 days (3-5x/day for short intervals).

  • I have to give a little back story to get to my comment. 2 years ago I became a Bilateral BKA and could no longer mow and all the other various landscaping chores in my very beautiful backyard. Last summer I hired a landscaper to maintain the yard…he KILLED EVERYTHING and I mean everything down to hard dirt and clay that is all that is left. Cut down 3 palm trees but left the stumps at least 3ft tall just sticking out of the dirt. Cut down my beautiful shade tree that has grown back as some weird bush around the 6ft tall tree stump he left. Basically this man took advantage of a disabled single mom and left me with a dump. I can’t look at my once gorgeous backyard for one more moment. I need some advice on how I can get a whole backyard of grass growing and really before it gets way to hot to plant. Any advice for me, I am really desperate

  • I have pretty sandy soil over here in Las Vegas. I bought some cheaper Yukon burmuda see and it didn’t work out. Not sure if it was the seed or if I planted it a little to early. I just purchased some Pennington Smart Seed Bermudagrass Mix with 2x faster results 8.75 LB. My question should I feed after I see it and if so w/ what? I sprayed some mirical grow on the first round but like I said it didn’t germinate. Any tipe are greatly appreciated. I ran a sprinkler system and I am waters 4 minutes at a time 5 times a day.

  • Hey Eli, Love the articles! Im here in Phoenix. There is no bermuda in our yard. We had it graded last year and all the existing grass was removed. We currently have perrinial rye, but that is starting to die out now. Can I seed with bermuda over the green rye grass and cover with topper? What do you recommend? Thanks

  • When is the best time to lay sod down? Can u grow grass with a drip system not a sprinkler? We wanna do our back yard with a rock border with plants and the middle as sod grass but not quite sure what steps should go first? Also when is best time to plant? Once summer comes is it futile to try anything?

  • Hello. Thank you for the article. I bought a “new build” home in San Tan Valley. The back yard is bare dirt, hard and rocky. I cleared a section of the yard and spread bermuda seed. I spread Scott’s triple action after that and potting soil after that. I wasn’t sure what would be better to help hold moisture. I’m trying to learn if I’m doing this right or not. After your article, I’m thinking not. Any advice?

  • Hey how you doing buddy I just saw your article and I’m interested to ask I have 40 acres of land and is dry everywhere. Of course I have trees but I don’t have gas but this is the thing I don’t have water sprinklers or a pump what grass you recommend and what month to put it in the rainy season where you recommend

  • Great clear article with no waffle. Can I ask should you not be increasing the volume of water at germination in order to get the water down 4 inches . Maybe water three times a week at this level. ? Or what is your definition of DEEP. And how many mm or inches is that per watering. And how many minutes is that?

  • Just pumped well Dry in 1 1/2 days! River near by. Sprayer system would have to be moved between Chanel & spray cycles. I would have to live at site, gasoline pump has to be hand filled with gas often and pull started and hand moving of Chanel’s and pump entrance into river! Why do I say this! Not practice to water 4 Chanel’s,, gas pump, 2 acres, 49 miles from home… 3 times per day! Need a better plan!
