Water in gasoline can cause engine sputtering, reduced fuel efficiency, and significant damage. To address this issue, use a fuel additive like ISO-HEET Water Remover to remove water from the tank. In this episode of Proctor Car Tips, Thomas discusses how water can leak into a vehicle’s gas tank and what to do if it happens. It is crucial to immediately remove the water from the tank before it causes permanent damage.
Condensation and station pumps allow water to infiltrate easily, so it is essential to address the issue. The best way to remove water from a gas tank is to drain the tank, clean it, and refuel it with good-quality fuel. A new filter can be added to the tank, and rubbing alcohol can also help. Fuel pumps should be facet-style, with a battery, fuel hose, and filter attached.
Small amounts of water can usually be removed from a has tank by adding a can of dry gas. A vacuum machine can be used to drain the tank, and an industrial-grade siphon pump can be used to carefully siphon out the water. Fuel tank water absorbers are designed to effectively remove water contamination from diesel and oil tanks. If draining bad fuel is not possible, try running the fuel as low as possible and refilling with premium fuel. Tilting the stern back or moving weight aft can help pool the water in the rear near the pickup.
In summary, water in gasoline can cause engine sputtering, reduced fuel efficiency, and significant damage. To address this issue, use a fuel additive like ISO-HEET Water Remover and follow established methods to remove water from your gas tank.

📹 Water in Gas Tank: Symptoms & How to Remove It?
The most frequent indications of water in gas tanks are listed in more detail below. Timecode: 00:00:00 – Blah-blah… 00:00:55 …
This really helped me. I just paid 250$ to drain out my gas tank. It was filled with so much water. The mechanic pumped it all out when I was standing there perusal. Hopefully, the gas station I went to will reimburse me like the mechanic said. If I put the gas in my tank Saturday and that following Monday my car messed up, how much damage really could happen in that short period of time?
If you have a truck You can get most of the water out Get a friend and take the 6-8 torque bolts from your ned remove the fuel hose Disconnect the rear light harness and you and your buddy Pick up the bed in the center of the wheel wells and move it back so you can get to the fuel pump once you have the fuel pump out start sucking out the fuel If you want it all out Jack up the front of your truck and put jack stands under the frame up from on either side that will make all fuel race to the back of the tank only do this after you got most of the fuel out then jack it up. If you like to hurry up the drying process use an air gun and Blow out the tank make sure you do this outside then take a rag and reach in and clean as much as you can you will find dirt and grim in your tank Make sure you clean the area where your fuel pump sits and filter sits. Remember people your fuel pump stays cool with at least a 1/2 a tank of gas in your Gas tank. And treat your car with some Higher octane once every 2 weeks makes your car or truck happy
The guy at an auto parts store said if my car started ” put puting” immediately after putting gas in I probably got bad gas. So he put some fluid I believe it was a fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank and run the car normally and by the time the gauge was showing half a tank used the noise and light would go away. My owners guide said it was the e emissions light that was blinking and sometimes steady. The auto parts guy said it was the engine light. The car sounds and feels somewhat better but is still slow and very hesitant on acceleration. Would a mechanic have to put my car on the diagnostic to be fairly sure it is just water in the tank? The guy said alot of places are putting too much ethanol in the fuel and some cars dont like that. Thank you.
I had a buddy put a new fuel pump in my 98 chevy pickup 5.7 liter he failed to seal the fuel pump on tight. It filled with rain water and wouldn’t start. I sifened all I could out of it. Put a higher octane gas in it and a water treatment in it. It ran for awhile but now is super hard to start and runs rough when it does start. Could this still be a fuel issue or something else?
I finally learned the truth about octane when I had the motor rebuilt on my race bike. (KTM Supermoto if you’re curious) I paid over 5K to gain 11hp. This doesn’t sound like much but the stock setup output about 50hp. That’s over 20%. After forking over the cash, my engine builder lmk that I had to run this specific VP Race Fuel that is about 105 octane. It’s also over $20 per gallon. For all that money I pushed for all the info I could get to justify the cost. Basically the engine had been tuned for optimum performance with this specific fuel. Octane has nothing to do with the quality of the fuel and everything to do with timing. It’s a bit counterintuitive as to what octane does to the time it takes it to burn in your combustion chamber. The higher the octane rating, the longer it takes to burn. The lower octane is quicker to burn. The general public is being scammed by their own ignorance. Like others, I used to “Treat my car” when pockets were chubby. I would fill up the tank with “premium” in my ’95 Jeep Wrangler. I convinced myself it ran better and got better milage. I was incorrect. I hope everyone who reads this and hasn’t heard anything of the sort before gets curious. Go educate yourself on one of the biggest scams that nobody really talks about. The oil companies aren’t trying to correct any misconceptions because it would hurt profits to be honest. Learn about it. Pass it on. You’re welcome. Oh and good luck with the water in your tank situation. 😉
Except most cars now days have a baffle or similar to discourage siphoning and I’m a decent mechanic and have never seen a car with a drain plug etc….you usually by disconnecting a connection point in the fuel system somewere under the vehicle? There should be 1 it would save time and make it alot easier…
after a car sets a few min. water and gas will seperate water on bottom of tank you can pump water out by useing a small hose and 12 v pump the gas is floating on the water id this on my army trk m37i use a 2 liter clear bottle to put water in then pour it outwhen you get most of the water out youwill start seeing gas floating on top of the water keep pumping till most water is gone
I would assume that if you have more water in your tank than gas that the car would not run it all. Of course those new fangled top secret hybrid steam/gas engine models still have a lot of real world problems. Gas stations are having problems getting pure water. The dual gas hoses are confusing customers. Saw a guy putting in actual gas in the car Of course I totally jest..
Hi Thomas. I suggest and request that you speak from a bullet-point list instead of a script. You will speak more naturally – in words, body language, and eye movement. It is important you slow down; a script allows you to read faster, which makes understanding your words more difficult … especially for us deaf folk and fureigners from Kansas, like me. Professional speakers suggest you lead with a story or joke (that is related to the topic). The Army teaches “Tell ’em what you’re going to tell ’em. Then tell ’em. Then tell ’em what you told ’em.” You are trying to be efficient about conveying the information. Kudos for that, but being too concise makes it forgettable, diminishing entertainment value by appearing two- dimensional. And in conclusion I commend you and thank you for the absence of background music. Please relax. We are all rooting for you. Have fun. Share your enjoyment with us.
I spent a year trying to find out what’s wrong with my car. I have a straight piped Corvette so it’s really loud. Which makes it easy to hear the idle. I couldn’t figure this out for the life of me until I changed my fuel filter a few hours ago. I found water in it so I used this article to make sure. Thank you so much for this it really helped
Just spent the last 2 months fixing my car replacing part because I thought it was that just cyphen the gas to put in my car but I noticed that there was little bubbles that weren’t air and was questioning it so pumped out as much as I could then pour a sample into a Mason jar and had about 75 % water with only 25% gas
Soo many words and so little content. to get rid of (normal amounts of) water there are two ways. The first best and cheapest: 1. Fill the tank before a longer journey and drive until the tank is almost empty. (Carry a spare tank just in case). As long as you drive, the water and gas mix and the water follows out to the engine. 2. Pour in an additive that binds the water with the gas (eg from STP, Redline). Run the tank almost empty. 3. When was the fuel filter last changed? Maybe a good idea to change before emptying the tank from residues in the bottom?
My gas gauge has a issue of not reading properly. Regardless of my constant adding $20 every other day I still ended up running out of gas. I had just left sheetz so I walked to Walmart bought a 2 gal can and filled it at sheetz then slowly put it in my tank. Was enough to get back to sheetz to fill up. Problem is right after I filled the tank I started the truck and noticed a big issue. It shakes like crazy and due to this I decided to return home. On the way back home I found it to shake almost jumping me out of my seat when at stoplights or stopsigns. When accelerating it takes alot to get it to actually speed up. By time the rims reach 2500 the check engine light is flashing. The code was po300 if I remember correctly. I do know it’s the code for the control unit. Now I’m worried about driving my truck as I don’t want to mess it up. The code could be bad sparkplugs, bad coils or simply water in the gas. Seeing it started literally right after filling up a empty tank I’m thinking it’s water but I dunno
