And while the bowl had die, most of the dye was still in the tank, and after turned the water off to that toilet, the tank was still full (with water and dye) hours later – the water level was not discernably less. The fill valve is old and probably needs replacement, but I don’t see how that would put dye from the tank into the bowl? Perhaps is the gasket and not the flapper?
