Bougainvillea is a fast-growing woody vine native to South America, known for its profuse, colorful foliage and small, pale flowers. This tropical vining plant requires warm temperatures and dry soil to thrive. Bougainvilleas are tough, rigorous, and can be trained as vines, shrubs, or trees. They can be grown in containers, hanging baskets, or directly in the ground, often used for climbing walls, trellises, or other structures.
Bougainvillea plants require full sun and well-draining soil to prevent root rot caused by standing water. Ideal soil is sandy or loamy, slightly acidic (between a 5.5 and 6.0 pH level). Bougainvilleas can be grown by a window, in a conservatory, or in a heated greenhouse. They require at least 6 hours of full sun daily to flower profusely and look their best.
To grow bougainvillea, plant them 6 to 9 feet apart in well-draining soil and away from other plants. Water sparingly when the top 2-3 inches of soil is dry, as they have sharp leaves. For efficient growth, bougainvilleas require well-draining soil with good drainage capabilities.
In summary, Bougainvilleas are versatile landscaping plants that can grow as vines, bushes, trees, or in planters. They require full sun, well-draining soil, and protection from direct sunlight under glass. To successfully cultivate these plants, follow these tips and ensure they receive the necessary care and support.

In this video I show you how to easily plant and grow beautiful bougainvilleas. These are the most gorgeous plants in my garden …
What is the secret to growing bougainvillea?
Bougainvillea requires six hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering, and should be fertilized every two weeks during the blooming season. To maintain flower production in pots, a water-soluble plant food should be used at a concentration of half the recommended strength.
Why does my bougainvillea have leaves but no flowers?
Bougainvillea plants flourish in partially shaded environments, exhibiting robust growth and the production of verdant, dark green foliage. However, despite these favorable conditions, the plants will not bloom. To flourish, these plants require at least eight hours of direct sunlight per day, which allows them to grow and bloom optimally.
What makes bougainvillea grow faster?
Bougainvillea plants grow quickly with adequate sunlight and soft plant ties. Regularly check and adjust ties to prevent cutting into the plant. To encourage growth, remove flower buds during training to focus on vines. Cut off new vines in late winter and avoid trimming growing tips until desired length is reached. For more help and inspiration, check out the Workshop posts. Remember to avoid trimming vine tips until desired length is reached.
What are the conditions for bougainvillea to flower?
Bougainvilleas are tropical climbers that require bright, sunny conditions, protection from direct sunlight, and a minimum night temperature of 10°C. They can be planted in conservatories or large containers, and their vibrant bracts brighten warm greenhouses and conservatory borders. They are suitable for large containers in the garden but must be kept frost-free in winter. Bougainvilleas bloom from summer to autumn and can grow up to 4-8m tall and 1-1. 5m wide. They are half hardy and require a heated glasshouse for indoor cultivation. They have moderate difficulty in propagation and cultivation.
Can you put cuttings straight into soil?
Plant propagation involves creating new plants by dropping seeds or suckering them. Stem cuttings are an easy way to propagate plants by trimming off a healthy portion of a stem, placing it in water or a growing medium until it develops roots, and then planting it in a pot or the ground. This method is common for creating new houseplants and works for many garden plants. In cold-weather zones, you can take clippings of tender annuals and root them indoors to prepare a supply of new plants for spring planting. These steps can be followed to multiply garden plants and houseplants.
Can I root bougainvillea in water?
Rooting is a process that involves starting with water or a soil mix, with fresh water being the best option. Once roots appear, transition to soil. A well-draining mix is crucial for soil starters, as too dry can cause rot. High humidity and warmth can be beneficial for rooting, but they can also lead to diseases. It’s important to monitor for any issues and act quickly if they occur. Cuttings are vulnerable, so gentle care is crucial.
How to induce flowering in bougainvillea?
Bougainvillea should be planted in a location with at least five hours of direct sunlight daily. If the plant is grown in shade or indoors, it will exhibit minimal blooming and will primarily grow vegetatively.
How to make bougainvillea flower more?
It is recommended that loose soil be gently loosened, fertilizer be added, the mixture be mixed, and water be applied prior to the flowering stage. Following the flowering period, it is advisable to provide the plants with a further feed.
Can I grow bougainvillea from a cutting?
To cultivate additional bougainvillea specimens, one should take 15 cm-long cuttings from new shoots with some old growth attached, remove any leaves from the bottom third, and place them in a pot of propagating sand.
What is the best fertilizer for bougainvillea to flower?
Vines are heavy feeders that require consistent nourishment in the form of water-soluble fertilizers with a concentration of 1/2 strength. Examples of suitable fertilizers include Peter’s 20-20-20, Excel 21-5-20, Miracle-Gro, and Rapid Grow. These fertilizers facilitate the blooming of vines for a minimum of 11 months.
Why is my bougainvillea not flowering?
Bougainvillea plants may fail to flower due to insufficient sunlight, according to garden expert Sam Niemann. These plants thrive in full sun, needing at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. In shady positions, they struggle. Elongated stems with wide gaps between leaves indicate insufficient light. Bougainvillea plants can grow up to 4 feet in one season, so purchasing small starter plants from Walmart can help them become large flowering climbers, filling walls and fences with blooms.

Well, this is a first for me. My wife wants these so I guess I ll soon be planting them. She bought 8 so far just like in your article. We ve been reading up on the soil needs. I need to know how deep and ideal spacing should be – against our back yard fence .Aside from that ….. we ll be doing the project in a couple days. Thanks.
In Ontario we have to bring them in for winter. I haven’t put them out yet for spring and I haven’t had any blooms this winter and they look straggly. On a grow light indoors. I think I was watering to much as mushrooms grew in soil so I now water lightly once a week. out doors last year I lost all my blooms thinking over watered as the get full sun. I did prune twice over winter. Do you think maybe I over watered them? Any help would be appreciated. Help? 🙂
Do you have any recommendations for new growth? I have 3 bouganvillea in my back yard. Two of them are both growing and blooming a lot but there is one that is blooming but doesn’t seem to have much new growth. We’ve had these plants since February and the size of that one seems to have stayed the same. I’d appreciate your input.
Thank you Kaitlyn, you have answered my question. There is a long stalk growing sideways and I didn’t know whether to prune it or not! Also, I was given it in May this year. It was flowering then, I put it in the garden and it is still flowering in December? Is that normal? It has spikes on it too? I live in UK so it is winter now.
I love flowers and I think orchids are too extremely overrated, don’t get me wrong, it’s a bit difficult to take care of, however, I think bougainvilleas are underrated, they are vibrant and beautifully colored and doesn’t take half the time to maintain them, water, lots of sunshine and fertilizer are all they need and they’ll make you proud of them..
